First Promo for CMT's New Show "Cheer!"

CHEER! will go inside the high stakes, high pressure world of competitive cheerleading with tough-as-nails coach, Patty Ann Romero. Romero's senior team consists of 20 highly-conditioned athletes capable of jaw-dropping stunts and perfectly choreographed dance moves. When they're not practicing in their gym, these ordinary teenage girls must balance a grueling schedule of conditioning and competitions along with school and the pressures of everyday life. Romero dominates in the gym, but she's like a second mother to her team and will do what it takes to make sure they succeed on the mat and in life. CHEER! is produced by Milojo Productions with Kelly Ripa, Mark Consuelos, Albert Bianchini and Julia Silverton serving as executive producers. CHEER! will premiere this fall.

Kinda throws you off, doesn't it? Never expected a legit show about competitive cheer to be on CMT. But it looks good, so hey - I'll take it.

this doc sounds interesting. the cheerleaders in my high school were so basic that for the longest time i thought that all cheerleading was like that. i went to see the bring it on musical on broadway a couple of weeks ago. a lot of the ensemble cast is made up of former professional cheerleaders, and omg, some of the stunts they do are insane. but i think i was more impressed with the non-cheerleading principal actors who managed to do similar stuff! like...how?

you couldn't trust me with a pyramid because that shit would collapse.

One of the leading bodies in the world of cheer (UCA) had a big hand in the creation of Bring it On when it was still in its early planning stages as just a national tour, and I believe that's where a lot of the ensemble comes from - former UCA staff members.

On the Varsity TV website, if you scroll down a bit, there's a link to a few different videos for Bring It On. I think "Cheer Development Day" or whatever it's called was one of the first videos up... it's an interesting watch.

i keep expecting to hear about Bring It On pulling a Spiderman or something and injuring all of its cast, but it hasn't happened yet. i guess the UCA really knows its stuff.

Yikes, I hope not. Though it does happen sometimes, someone or something's off by just a hair or a tenth of a second and it could end pretty badly.

Ya competitive cheer is completely different than cheering for a team. I wouldn't do non-competitive cheer, it was so boring in comparison.

I saw Bring It On the Musical when it was still on tour. Maybe they changed it, but the main actors barely did any cheerleading when I saw it. They did some simple stuff or were put them in the background. I assumed it would be that anyway so it didn't surprise me at all.

But I still enjoyed it, it had some stuff that reminded me so much of my experiences from cheer.

I don't think the main actors were ever tossed into the air as high as the professional cheerleaders were, but they did do a few complicated moves (well...complicated to me, lol). Like there was one moment where the main character was held up in front of some pyramid-type formation and then they tossed her backwards so that she flipped and landed on top of the pyramid...or something. I'm not explaining it well, lol. (I don't think it was a true pyramid structure, IDEK.) I just remember inwardly cringing, thinking that she'd miss the catcher's hands and crash on the floor.

I don't remember it that clearly at this point anymore since I saw it in spring. I did get a little nervous for the main people since some of the times they did go up, they were shaky.

I wonder how the musical changed from the tour to Broadway. I thought the musical was good, but it definitely had some parts that needed to be worked out.

I'll end up watching this.

I get so addicted to that show about the Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders they play every year.
rissa_rose 10th-Aug-2012 08:39 pm (UTC)
I believe this airs right after the DCC show, too. Back to back cheer. :)
makahakat 10th-Aug-2012 08:26 pm (UTC)
every cheerleading documentary or show just makes me think of that one where the cheerleader had her teeth knocked out mid-routine and kept going
rissa_rose 10th-Aug-2012 08:41 pm (UTC)
I know the exact documentary you're talking about.

I don't think I even get that station.
fallingxtragedy 10th-Aug-2012 08:43 pm (UTC)
We did our jump section to edge of glory in our cheer routine and when I hear it I go through the motions.

/coolstorybro

I will so be watching this.
rissa_rose 10th-Aug-2012 08:46 pm (UTC)
Story of my life. If a song from any routine I'm familiar with is playing on the radio in a car or at the supermarket, you better believe I'll be marking the routine.

It's habit.

Aren't there cheering shows on Lifetime and TLC? Overkill.
rissa_rose 10th-Aug-2012 08:47 pm (UTC)
There's one on TLC that is a terrible, misguided representation of competitive cheer.

This one will be accurate and exciting.

Yes I will watch, I love the making of the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleader show.
