'Avengers' Star Jeremy Renner Was Disappointed By Hawkeye's Dark Turn

Of all the "Avengers" team members, Clint Barton has it the hardest. Not only does his proficiency with a bow look relatively minor compared to the godlike powers of Thor and the gamma-fueled ways of the Hulk, but he also spent much of the Marvel super-flick fighting for the wrong team. You could forgive Hawkeye for being a bit bummed out.

Jeremy Renner, the actor behind the acclaimed archer, is pretty disappointed with Hawkeye as well. In an interview with Hero Complex, the "Bourne Legacy" actor spoke openly and honestly about his disappointment in how his "Avengers" role played out.

"At the end of the day, 90% of the movie, I'm not the character I signed on to play," said Renner, speaking about Hawkeye's Loki-dictated turn towards the dark side. "I'm literally in there for two minutes, and then all of a sudden… All I could really work on was the physical part of it all, because that didn't change. That was just the biggest challenge to overcome in playing the guy."

"I prefer the good [aspects of Hawkeye], because if we go to the evil part, or hypnotized or whatever the heck you want to call it, it's kind of a vacancy," he continued. "Not even a bad guy, because there's not really a consciousness to him. The interesting part was being guilty about the bad things I did do when I was hypnotized. I think he's already an interesting enough character. To really kind of take away who that character is and just have him be this sort of robot, essentially, and have him be this minion for evil that Loki uses. Again, I could just focus on the task. I was limited, you know what I mean? I was a terminator in a way. So yeah, fun stunts. But is there any sort of emotional content or thought process? No. That doesn't exist in that time [that he's hypnotized]. It happens to be for most of the movie."

Asked directly if he was disappointed with the role, Renner said: "You know, there are a lot of people in that movie. And a lot of important characters. And my character, I felt like if I can help serve story, then I did my job."

It's not all downside for Renner, of course. The actor said he was intrigued by the guilt Barton feels after waking up from hypnosis, for one thing, as well as the suggested past between Hawkeye and Black Widow.

Jeremy's resting face thanks you for your time.

Boy, pick up a damn comic. Hawkeye started out as a villain.

The fan backlash has been so massive and the circumstances of his death were left rather ambiguous; I think there's room for a re-appearance.

Not holding my breath, but I won't be at all disappointed if he does return in some capacity.

I absolutely don't want him to come back. It would feel even cheaper than killing him off in the first place.

This is the Marvel Universe- Hawkeye came back from the dead because he was bored.

idk, I think they gave him a graceful exit before he became a token comedic character. Throughout the entire series thus far, his job has been to bring everyone together, which, in his death, he has completed.

If they just bring him back and Fury is all "lol we just lied to you!!" and they all just accept it, then smh. However it would be an interesting way to have to Avengers begin to distrust SHIELD and break away from something government run to become independent instead.

Since Avengers 2 will be the second (and therefore darkest) chapter in a 3-act story, I think it would be an excellent way to bring the dramatic B-plot to the story on top of Thanos fuckin' errybody day up.

Not to mention the fact that it's absolutely no secret that the heroes' cooperation with S.H.I.E.L.D. is begrudging, at best, and if Fury did indeed lie, that reveal could be used as the breaking point between the Avengers and S.H.I.E.L.D. Someone on another forum I frequent even pointed out that if they were able to revive him against his will; it wouldn't negate his sacrifice because he didn't ask to be saved.

But, in the end, he did serve his purpose as the catalyst for bringing them all together and if he's really gone, then I've no complaints. Dude didn't go out like a bitch and he's finally getting his own action figure.
