I'm so pissed at the many fuck-ups by judges at the Olympics. It's a joke if they wouldn't do anything about it even after he admitted cheating. Why wouldn't they use underwater footage? And didn't an Austrian swimmer got disqualified but couldn't appeal because there is no camera at his lane? Such BS.

tiddlywinks103 8th-Aug-2012 12:19 am (UTC)
I’m not willing to sacrifice my personal performance and four years of hard work for someone that is willing to do it and get away with it

Uhhhhhhhhhhhhh...
agnes_perdita 8th-Aug-2012 12:21 am (UTC)
Guys, it's not like he's going around all "HA HA I WON AND I CHEATED". He was caught on tape doing the extra kick and asked directly about it so obviously he has to be upfront about it because he doesn't have wriggle room. It would be worse to lie at this point.

Also, all this controversy seems to stem from the Sydney Morning Herald, an Australian newspaper and were this dude stripped of his medal, it would be an Australian (Sprenger - not Rickard who Van der burgh points out did the same thing as him) who would move up to gold. Not saying this excuses Van der Burgh, but keep in mind the media bias working here.

I can understand that a lot of people probably do this and there is a lot of pressure to do whatever it takes to win at this level.

But why in God's name would you be stupid enough to brag about it to the press?
amkf 8th-Aug-2012 12:34 am (UTC)

He's not bragging about it. He was asked about it.

Video replays appear to show van der Burgh taking three of them.

Van der Burgh, who is from South Africa, spoke to the Sydney Morning Herald and admitted to breaking the rules. He also said other swimmers employ the same tactic.

Sure, because that makes it wholly different.

No, wait, it doesn't.
galagooo 8th-Aug-2012 12:32 am (UTC)
Brendan Hansen could have gotten a silver for the US, then.
lachica2000 8th-Aug-2012 12:47 am (UTC)
It wouldn't even be the first time he's lost out because of someone dolphin kicking. Kitajima did the same shit in 2004 to get the gold.
smilofax 8th-Aug-2012 12:46 am (UTC)
A GB cyclist did the same thing (admitted to cheating) and admitted right after he won a gold medal
luesietjuh 8th-Aug-2012 01:04 am (UTC)
I'm pretty sure that was a joke/lost in translation thing though, as English was his second language?
jackal_onassis 8th-Aug-2012 01:03 am (UTC)
it sounds more like talking about the rule enforcement and what a disadvantage he would be at if he didn't "cheat" and not like he's rubbing it in peoples faces

is he the one that is getting his medal replicated ?
jackal_onassis 8th-Aug-2012 01:04 am (UTC)
also the dolphin kick was orignally completely banned. its all about rule changes
it_llbeyourname 8th-Aug-2012 01:03 am (UTC)
this is in no way as bad as the badminton thing. at all.
fabouluz 8th-Aug-2012 01:07 am (UTC)
Take it off him, they are catching cheats up to ten years after the event. So he is not safe.
magsyb 8th-Aug-2012 01:24 am (UTC)
this kinda ticks me off... when this *points to the HBIC in icon* could have totally used all this awesome shit technology ... such hate at these olympics...
yummymarsbars 8th-Aug-2012 02:59 am (UTC)
Does this mean we can his medal to Lochte?
shoparazzi 8th-Aug-2012 03:30 am (UTC)
Here's the video for anyone who wants to see how obvious it was.

It's such bull. An Austrian swimmer was DQed in the semi-finals of the 200IM for an "illegal dolphin kick" going into the breast, yet this mo gets a gold medal and a WR.
wathsalive 8th-Aug-2012 04:56 am (UTC)
This is week old news. And his point was that there should be underwater cameras monitoring this because literally everyone cheats and you'd be at a disadvantage if you only did one dolphin kick during your race.

It’s not obviously - shall we say - the moral thing to do, but I’m not willing to sacrifice my personal performance and four years of hard work for someone that is willing to do it and get away with it

Well, it says everything you need to know about him. The word ethic definitely is not in his vocabulary.
prophecypro 8th-Aug-2012 05:36 am (UTC)
lol oh wow, he did a few extra dolphin kicks. Scandalous lol

If one of the dudes in the cycling admitted to crashing on purpose to let his team win (that dude from Team GB) this aint nothing.
