Jeffrey Ross attempts Joe Paterno, Aurora shooting jokes at Roseanne roast

They say comedy isn't pretty. On Saturday, some may have said it was downright ugly.

Jeffrey Ross, roastmaster general for "The Comedy Central Roast of Roseanne (Barr)" showed up on the red carpet as Penn State football coach Joe Paterno, flanked by two young-looking males. Showing up in costume is nothing new for Ross. At last year's roast of Charlie Sheen, the comic, who tends to lean towards the theatrical, arrived as slain Libyan leader Colonel Moammar Qaddafi.

As if the sight of Ross as Paterno wasn't shocking enough, Ross treaded on very dangerous comedy territory when he turned to Seth Green, who was sitting on the dais and dropped this 'zinger':

"Seth, congratulations. This is actually a great night for you... You haven't gotten this much attention since you shot all those people in Aurora. ...I'm kidding. You are not like James Holmes. At least he did something in a movie theater that people remember!"

Soon after, Ross admitted to NBC News that his approach was certainly no holds-barred. But does he think he crossed the line? "Yes, I crossed a line, and that is what the roasts are about," he said. "That's what Roseanne is about — unapologetic comedy. If I had held back, I would have done her a disservice."

TMZ reports that the Ross joke will be edited from the broadcast when it airs Sunday, Aug. 12, at 10 p.m.

Ugh already dreading the news stories this will result in. The further explanation in defense. Other comedians reacting and possibly supporting it and exposing themselves as fucking idiots.
kwikimart 7th-Aug-2012 01:34 pm (UTC)
oh god you're right : /
mynamehere07 7th-Aug-2012 01:39 pm (UTC)
yup. Crying about free speech and what humor is and how everyone is just hyper sensitive.

arisma 7th-Aug-2012 02:05 pm (UTC)
Because apparently there's a select handful of people who understand wtf free speech is and the rest are just using it as a shield for stupidity.

/big ass peeve
minalskare 7th-Aug-2012 02:58 pm (UTC)
ugh. this comment is so accurate.
evilgmbethy 7th-Aug-2012 03:45 pm (UTC)
every time one comic does/says something stupid, you can always count on pretty much every other comic jumping in and showing asshole solidarity
kwikimart 7th-Aug-2012 01:33 pm (UTC)

ughhhhhhhh
mhfromnh 7th-Aug-2012 02:31 pm (UTC)
I love those guys. Jamaican GPS is a riot.
thetxbelle 7th-Aug-2012 01:36 pm (UTC)
Molestation, pedophilia, rape, etc are always off limits. You just don't joke about those things.
mellarks 7th-Aug-2012 01:44 pm (UTC)
They they're in 'Murrica and have free speech and you can't just take that away from them, gosh.
glamophonik 7th-Aug-2012 01:40 pm (UTC)
that is disgusting.

why why why do i live in a world where people think this is funny
motorwill 7th-Aug-2012 01:41 pm (UTC)
that 'joke' doesn't make sense
luvthatdrtywata 7th-Aug-2012 01:45 pm (UTC)
it makes sense and it's clever but why anyone would say it out loud is beyond me. we all have awful thoughts sometimes, the difference is knowing that some things are better left unsaid. he's a comedian, he has plenty of funny thoughts, he needs to learn that not all of them need be spoken. get a fucking journal bro.
firecracker_sj 7th-Aug-2012 01:48 pm (UTC)
Fuck this unfunny idiot.
jrh19782002 seth gurl u in danger7th-Aug-2012 01:48 pm (UTC)
i think what he said was 10 times worse than what ross said.its a little bit to soon to be makeing jokes about the shooting.

and yes molesting childern is just as bad im just saying the shooting happend not to long ago.
arisma Re: seth gurl u in danger7th-Aug-2012 02:07 pm (UTC)
What did Seth say?
whalewars Re: seth gurl u in danger7th-Aug-2012 02:11 pm (UTC)
I think you're reading this wrong... Jeffrey Ross made both of those jokes.
littleonelychee Re: seth gurl u in danger7th-Aug-2012 03:09 pm (UTC)
the joke was made semi-about Seth Green, not by him
pikapika217 7th-Aug-2012 01:58 pm (UTC)
ugh, SO GROSS

it just makes me miss Greg all the more. He would NEVER
pipsdixiechick 7th-Aug-2012 10:23 pm (UTC)
I agree that Greg would never take it that far, and I do miss him too-having said that he did make a Mary Kate/Heath quip at Bob Saget's roast that was a bit cringe worthy (Bob looked really uncomfortable with it)with all the reports of her being the last person to be with Heath before he died-also I think it was done only around six months after Heath's passing.

I do get you though, just that joke always stuck out for me. RIP Greg and RIP Heath.
pikapika217 7th-Aug-2012 10:37 pm (UTC)
Jeff just lacks the finesse at making something super controversial into a funny joke. His failure reminded me of Lisa success with her VERY controversial Rihanna/Chris Joke -

the incident is STILL something that offends me, a lot of her act does truly (especially with me being a black guy) but DAMN if it wasn't a good joke. There's certainly an act to telling those jokes but something tells me that you need to be whittier to do it. (and ouch at that last greg joke - harsher in hindsight :/)

Mass murderer too! Idk which amuses me more.
definitelybro 7th-Aug-2012 02:03 pm (UTC)
jeffery ross is the worst. i'll never understand why he's always invited to these roast things when he doesn't even know any of the people being roasted.
supernatural 7th-Aug-2012 02:10 pm (UTC)
I could have sworn the older roasts were just that--FRIENDS getting together to roast their peer. Someone they are close to and they know.

Now it's like "oh let's get any zzz-list 'comedian' to tell random, tasteless jokes, even though they have NEVER had even a 2 minute conversation with the roastee!"
menorahmajora 7th-Aug-2012 02:33 pm (UTC)
if it were just friends most of these things would be full of unfunny, secondhand embarassment and awkward deleveries from people who know nothing of doing comedy. It would be like that episode of The Office where they roast Stanley.
boomstick 7th-Aug-2012 02:54 pm (UTC)
Honestly, I don't think most of the roasters know the roastee. Making a "thing" out of roasts was such a terrible idea.
pikapika217 7th-Aug-2012 10:43 pm (UTC)
that's not the issue - the issue is that he is NOT funny
shadowpiranha 7th-Aug-2012 02:15 pm (UTC)
Oh come on, no.
smashpumpkins21 7th-Aug-2012 02:21 pm (UTC)
Also I like how he says if he had held back he would've been doing Roseanne a "disservice". The fact he would even use that wording is disgusting to me. As if we should all be relieved and thankful he made the joke.
mhfromnh 7th-Aug-2012 02:35 pm (UTC)
I told an offensive joke in an elevator once. it was wrong on so many levels.
gypsy_leerose 7th-Aug-2012 03:31 pm (UTC)
Haha
x_neverenough 7th-Aug-2012 09:37 pm (UTC)
lol
menorahmajora 7th-Aug-2012 02:37 pm (UTC)
Of course not. ONTD is full of saints who would never do such things, where would they find the time, what with their panties perpetually in a twist?
generationxwing 7th-Aug-2012 04:09 pm (UTC)
There's a difference between saying it to your friend and both having a guilty laugh and doing it on a television show/live audience that you don't know.
nowakingeye 7th-Aug-2012 04:56 pm (UTC)
not the point of the post.
mynamehere07 7th-Aug-2012 05:12 pm (UTC)
Making a joke that you probably shouldn't in front of your friends =/= Making a joke that you probably shouldn't in front of a national audience.
littleonelychee 7th-Aug-2012 02:32 pm (UTC)
is he anybody? never fucking heard of this human skidmark and pulling shit like that just reeks of ~shock comics~ who know they aren't really that funny at all...
