Natalie Portman: Inside Her Strictly Vegan Wedding

The wedding between Natalie Portman and Benjamin Millepied reflected not just the bride's Jewish faith and the groom's French nationality, but also the couple's outlook on the world.

Instead of having flowers flown in, the ceremony featured wildflowers indigenous to the Big Sur coast where the ceremony took place, and instead of "fish or steak" the menu was strictly vegan in keeping with the bride's diet.

Portman, 31, chose a traditional white gown from Rodarte, the same house that made the purple dress that Portman wore to the 2010 Oscars, and wore a crown of white wildflowers in her hair. The groom, 35, wore a midnight blue tux.

Eschewing the traditional wedding cake, the couple opted for French macarons.

When things wrapped up around 2 a.m., the approximately 100 guests took home packets of wildflower seeds as party favors. The packets were inscribed with a single word: "Merci."

My sister had a strict vegan wedding. The cake sucked, but I've had great vegan cake since then.
asha_greyjoy 7th-Aug-2012 04:13 am (UTC)
imo vegan cake usually tastes better than normal cake.
but vegan food is super easy to mess up
foxxywith2xs 7th-Aug-2012 04:15 am (UTC)
yes i agree with this. i hate regular cake but vegan cake owns me.
empirebird 7th-Aug-2012 04:15 am (UTC)
Fuck no it doesn't. I mean, I like it, but it does not.
enid_keaner 7th-Aug-2012 05:41 am (UTC)
Gurl, no.

I can enjoy vegan cake, but it is not better than normal cake. You lyin.
pamelalillian 7th-Aug-2012 06:37 am (UTC)
ia

and i hate desserts
__papillon 7th-Aug-2012 07:36 am (UTC)
vegan cake is great for when you're drunk and hungry or even when you have the muchies lol it's heavy but not sweet, very satisfying.
guadalcanal 7th-Aug-2012 04:18 am (UTC)
one of my dad's co-workers did and oh god the cake was the most horrifying thing my taste buds have ever encountered
glamoroustype 7th-Aug-2012 09:09 am (UTC)
I make fantastic vegans cakes and muffins. Lemon and poppy seed muffins are the greatest.
ar_feiniel_ 7th-Aug-2012 12:42 pm (UTC)
Honestly do any wedding cakes ever taste that great?

I never had one that I liked that much.
cuteej4 7th-Aug-2012 04:09 am (UTC)
I would have snuck in food
pastelstar 7th-Aug-2012 04:12 am (UTC)
post wedding run for mc d's.
cuteej4 7th-Aug-2012 04:13 am (UTC)
Honestly, I've brought snacks to weddings before but that's because you never know when you're going to eat and I have a strict med/food schedule. Lol
fakevoices 7th-Aug-2012 04:17 am (UTC)
seriously, i would do that too
stellar_ball 7th-Aug-2012 04:19 am (UTC)
Unimportant story time! My friends thought that we were invited to the dinner portion of a wedding (our invites were printed via computer, so I knew we were last minute invites, yet they still bought "dinner price" gifts) but of course we weren't, so we went to KFC then the liquor store to get purse sized liquor bottles since it was just free soda at the bar. Best wedding ever.
tiddlywinks103 7th-Aug-2012 04:27 am (UTC)
Right?
whosebatman 7th-Aug-2012 04:54 am (UTC)
I was going to say, I would've gone straight for a Big Mac afterwards.
grande_latte 7th-Aug-2012 04:18 am (UTC)
I've done that before tacos, in n. Out, taco bell
frenchverbs 7th-Aug-2012 01:50 pm (UTC)
There was a 2 hr gap between my friend's wedding and her reception, so my bf and I hit up some burger place...nom nom nom. By the time we got to the wedding, we were stuffed. It was worth it because the food at the wedding was terrible.
rabbitncavylove 8th-Aug-2012 02:12 am (UTC)
It's their day. Why don't you just eat before or after instead of sneaking in non vegan food? That is kinda insulting
bakemonos 7th-Aug-2012 04:10 am (UTC)
I would be one pissed off wedding guest.

beautiful_void 7th-Aug-2012 04:11 am (UTC)
I...get that she's vegan, and she should have food she can eat and enjoy at her own wedding, but it seems a bit selfish to not have food that your guests will enjoy. At least have some options.
pelo_suelto 7th-Aug-2012 04:12 am (UTC)
she doesn't give a shit about anyone. this is the same stupid bitch that said recessions are good because it makes people creative.
stellar_ball 7th-Aug-2012 04:24 am (UTC)
She seriously said that? I at least somewhat respect her cause she's admitted she's super privileged, but you'd think she'd learn. Eventually.
anna_bea2 7th-Aug-2012 04:29 am (UTC)
yikes

cickiz 7th-Aug-2012 04:14 am (UTC)
ia. i'm okay with vegetarian though but vegan just seems too far.
kapuki234 7th-Aug-2012 04:16 am (UTC)
vegan food isn't always gross food. there's some delicious vegan shit.
ms_mmelissa 7th-Aug-2012 04:16 am (UTC)
She's compared allowing people to eat meat to standing by and allowing someone to be raped (all the while supporting Roman Polanski who is an admitted rapist) so I don't think having a meat option was something she would ever really consider.
moulinette 7th-Aug-2012 04:19 am (UTC)
I agree completely.
silentsymphonie 7th-Aug-2012 04:20 am (UTC)
one time my parents had a big dinner party with a bunch of our neighbors. they had vegetarian options but also served meat. later they heard that our veg neighbors down the street complained bc how ~dare my parents serve meat in their presence.

fuckmyass 7th-Aug-2012 04:23 am (UTC)
huh? there is a shit ton of vegan delicious stuff. are you one of those annoying meat eaters?
sereneecho 7th-Aug-2012 04:32 am (UTC)
mte
msamericandream 7th-Aug-2012 04:33 am (UTC)
it's HER wedding though? if she's the one paying for it, she can serve whatever she wants
cruel11 7th-Aug-2012 04:44 am (UTC)
Ia. I would have been a pissed off guest. She does like a mean bitch, so i'm not surprised she did this.
nicholasdee 7th-Aug-2012 04:54 am (UTC)
i think veganism is dumb, but i am pretty sure that her guests can enjoy vegan food for one night

its not that alien
kalie_m 7th-Aug-2012 05:18 am (UTC)
I'm vegan and ita. Not everyone wants to eat vegan food, get over it.
kimberwyn 7th-Aug-2012 05:23 am (UTC)
Tbh I think it's more selfish when people go to weddings and complain about the food or what they do/don't serve.
mortoeroe 7th-Aug-2012 05:30 am (UTC)
uh, it's her wedding. i can't stand her AT ALL, but she can serve whatever she wants + stick to her beliefs.

besides, there is some SERIOUSLY delicious vegan food out there (hello cafe gratitude).
moongiechan 7th-Aug-2012 05:37 am (UTC)
I honestly doubt that the food at her wedding wasn't superb. ... and yeah, I am vegan, but still. She's rich, that stuff was gourmet.
sweetwaterpink 7th-Aug-2012 05:46 am (UTC)
MTE. She seems full of herself tbh.
getbacknow 7th-Aug-2012 06:16 am (UTC)
why can't people enjoy vegan food? for most people it's not a diet they want to sustain but to act like it's taxing on the guests to eat a single meal that doesn't have meat, eggs or dairy is silly.
ladypolitik 7th-Aug-2012 06:56 am (UTC)
Hypothetically-speaking, I wouldnt attend. But that's 97% because I'd be too stuck on the fact that Natalie Portman would be there.
fuckyess 7th-Aug-2012 07:35 am (UTC)
but how do you know you wouldn't enjoy it?

just because it says vegan people automatically hate it, but if you serve it to them without calling it anything i bet they'll like it
glamoroustype 7th-Aug-2012 09:11 am (UTC)
Who's to say the guests wouldn't enjoy it though? I make vegan food when my friends come to my place all the time and they love it.
chikntetrazzini 7th-Aug-2012 11:29 am (UTC)
I totally disagree. If you feel strongly about something, you shouldn't have to alter your feelings on YOUR wedding day.. She doesn't want to be around meat, she's the bride, no meat.
ashleyyyy 7th-Aug-2012 12:07 pm (UTC)
That's exactly how I would do it. Have options for all the guests.
schaaawing 7th-Aug-2012 01:46 pm (UTC)
well, when/ f i get married, i'll have a vegan wedding. and it's not so i can enjoy the food, it's because i just don't want any animals to suffer cause of my wedding. i'm not vegan for my sake, it's for the animals' sake, so maybe it's the same for natalie?
unpeudezen 7th-Aug-2012 01:53 pm (UTC)
Personally I think it's the opposite. If you can't give up meat for ONE NIGHT in order to celebrate with me, then frankly you can stay the fuck at home lol
xdecadentx 7th-Aug-2012 02:58 pm (UTC)
The fuck, it's her wedding. She can serve what she wants.

I'm Muslim and I'm not serving anything from a pig should I get married, people can deal.
karebear82 7th-Aug-2012 05:13 pm (UTC)
Just because it is vegan doesn't mean that people who aren't vegan can't enjoy it though.

You'd think people will die having to eat one meal with only vegetables, like they don't ever eat vegetables in any other circumstance.
juel1979 7th-Aug-2012 05:43 pm (UTC)
This. Our reception was at a restaurant (I'm anti-dancing, and the inlaws drink, but my family doesn't really, so we wanted it available) and we had chicken, seafood and steak. Sooo good. My husband actually ate TWO dinners, it was funny.
fraubluecher 7th-Aug-2012 08:30 pm (UTC)
I'm sure she had nice food... You really think she has to get animals killed if she's morally opposed, because her guests might enjoy it? You'd also expect beef at a Hindu wedding, if there are some beef fans invited?
rabbitncavylove 8th-Aug-2012 02:13 am (UTC)
How do you know the vegan food was bad? That is what it sounds like you're saying. They prob had a good caterer. It's their day, not the guests.
andres01234 7th-Aug-2012 04:11 am (UTC)
dis hippie bitch...
pastelstar 7th-Aug-2012 04:11 am (UTC)
I went to a vegetarian Chinese wedding banquet once. I HAVE NEVER BEEN MORE PISSED. If I gotta sit through twelve course, you betcha I'm going to want fucking lobster and meat.
rachphan 7th-Aug-2012 06:14 am (UTC)
Vegetarian Chinese people EXIST?

I live for Chinese wedding banquets and questionably prepared seafood. feeling your pain, gurl
mechanically 7th-Aug-2012 04:12 am (UTC)
I find that kind of... rude...? idk
distant_lines 7th-Aug-2012 04:12 am (UTC)
I get that it's her wedding and everything, but I think it's kind of rude to revolve the menu around things only you eat. I don't eat red meat or drink champagne, but I'll serve both at my wedding.
emerald_soul 7th-Aug-2012 04:12 am (UTC)
IA.
leviicorpus 7th-Aug-2012 04:37 am (UTC)
But do you have a moral opposition to red meat and champagne?
distant_lines 7th-Aug-2012 04:44 am (UTC)
I don't think it matters if I do or not. It's not my place to impose my beliefs on someone else. I have a moral opposition to smoking, but I'm not going to tell my father he can't come to the wedding.
enid_keaner 7th-Aug-2012 05:45 am (UTC)
I'll bite.

I actually do have a moral opposition to alcohol. I however, will not have a dry wedding because, while I am opposed to alcohol, the vast majority of the people who would attend would not be.
xdecadentx 7th-Aug-2012 03:01 pm (UTC)
Why is that rude? It's your wedding.

I'm Muslim, if I get married there will be no pork or alcohol and everything will be halal.

If you're going to complain about it, you're the selfish one.
maybejessmaybe 7th-Aug-2012 03:22 pm (UTC)
she seems like an asshole sometimes but if i had very strong beliefs about diet, i wouldn't serve those things either. i'm sure she had awesome caterers that made excellent, tasty, and filling vegan dishes.
unpeudezen 7th-Aug-2012 05:05 pm (UTC)
I think it's kind of rude to be more concerned with what's on your plate then the whole reason you were invited in the first place. As their guest you should be there to honour them as a couple and share in their day. A couple's wedding is a reflection on THEM and who THEY are.. why should they compromise their beliefs for the sake of YOUR appetite?
x_noisekisses 7th-Aug-2012 04:12 am (UTC)
i wonder how many guests stopped by a drive thru afterwards.
distant_lines 7th-Aug-2012 04:16 am (UTC)
Afterwards? I would have been having pizza delivered.
oceanhue 7th-Aug-2012 04:40 am (UTC)
OMG you and me both bb! I'm shameless though.
criswithnoh 7th-Aug-2012 01:08 pm (UTC)
There was an episode of Four Weddings on TLC where one of the brides and a dessert reception. No real food, it was all desserts and some grapes and cheese. The 3 guest brides wound up ordering pizza and having it delivered because they were so hungry and felt sick from eating nothing but desserts.

ichdontthinksoo 7th-Aug-2012 04:20 am (UTC)
I know! I can't even eat a fucking chicken nugget without one of the vegans at my work breathing on my neck telling me how wrong it is. I refuse to let those bitches make me feel guilty about eating meat, I REFUSE.
janvierjuillet 7th-Aug-2012 06:44 am (UTC)
HA my friend and I always make fun of vegans and his favourite thing to say to vegans is "you eat chicken, right? Chicken is practically a vegetable!"

Where is the ecological benefit of not having flowers flown in but having your dress flown in from Paris?

that said, Congrats

godramaclub 8th-Aug-2012 11:37 am (UTC)
Weddings where I live can end up like this. Ceremony is usually around midday/1pm, DJ stops playing about 1am, but by the time goodbyes are said and everyone mills around chatting etc. you're not really done til 2. Awwww yisssss.
hotcement 7th-Aug-2012 04:14 am (UTC)
Eschewing the traditional wedding cake, the couple opted for French macarons.

FUCK YES

if i was there i would have gotten into a beat-down with the other guests while hoarding macarons for myself tbh
arlen_mci 7th-Aug-2012 04:18 am (UTC)
this sounds like me i would love to just have a giant mountain of macarons instead of tired old cake!
hotcement 7th-Aug-2012 04:21 am (UTC)

I thought macarons are made with egg whites... How does that work with a strictly vegan wedding?
kimberwyn 7th-Aug-2012 05:24 am (UTC)
Right?? LOL. That's what I'm having instead of a birthday cake today/tomorrow and I can't WAIT.
tracycutie 7th-Aug-2012 09:50 am (UTC)
I will totally do this if i ever got married
ginger_maya 7th-Aug-2012 10:38 am (UTC)
Considering that French macarons require egg whites I really wonder how that went with her vegan-only food.
silky_pico 7th-Aug-2012 10:52 am (UTC)
Fucking seriously

I have no shame, i would eat everything and stealthily put the rest into my purse for later. NO SHAME WHEN IT COMES TO MACARONS
