Matt Lauer criticized for saying "Indian giver" on 'Today'

Photobucket

Matt Lauer has been criticized for using the phrase "Indian giver" during his coverage of the London Olympics for Today.

During a segment about Stella McCartney, co-host Meredith Vieira handed some underwear that McCartney had designed to Lauer.

After the pair joked about the knickers, Vieira asked to take them back, prompting Lauer to say: "No, no, no, they're mine - don't be an Indian giver."

The term "Indian giver" refers to someone who gives a present and then wants it back, and is offensive to Native Americans.

Viewers later took to Twitter to complain about Lauer's use of the term, with one user writing: "Can't believe people still think this term is acceptable! Kinda shocked."

Other posters called for Lauer to apologize, while one member wrote: "U just insulted every native American Shame on U & the rest of the NBC & @thetodayshow"

Reality star Kris Jenner was criticized for using the term "Indian giver" last year, while Jessica Simpson sparked outrage when she used the phrase in 2009.

Y'know, I'm not sure if they have it in the UK, but there's this really qt thing called the internet. It has all the information you could possibly want on any given subject, including the origins of the phrase in question.

Awww, babe, I don't know whether you watched the Olypmic opening ceremony but we invented it.

Ya'll did? Huh, I thought Al Gore did. In any case, how about you use that magical invention and actually put some effort into not being ignorant.

Because some people will put some effort into being informative rather than taking to time out to explain they're not going to be informative.

You still didn't put any effort into educating yourself. rme

When you ask a question while simultaneously mocking people for finding something you know nothing about offensive, you can't really expect anyone to go out of their way to be informative for you.

Oh, honey. You keep digging a hole. The opening ceremony featured one of the creators of the World Wide Web. You can find that and a whole host of other information by using the American-created sites Google and Wikipedia.
