LA Times: Is Lady Gaga Fading From The Pop Scene?

MTV announced the nominees for this year's Video Music Awards, and there were clear leaders - and one eyebrow-raising omission.

Drake and Rihanna led the field with five nods apiece. The latter was heavily featured on Drake's album "Take Care," and the two frequently spur speculation about their relationship (most recently when Drake's and Chris Brown's posses erupted in a champagne-hurling brawl, reportedly over Rihanna). The two will each compete with Brown in different categories, Rihanna in choreography and Drake for male video.

Katy Perry landed four noms, while Coldplay, M.I.A., Jay-Z and Kanye's Watch the Throne and newcomer Frank Ocean scored three apiece.

The snub? Lady Gaga, the figurehead of last year's ceremonies, got zero. She was eligible in two categories and earned much early praise for her extravagant, cinematic art-epics. Is this another sign she's slipping in the pop milieu? The always-eventful telecast takes place at Staples Center on Sept. 6 and will feature live performances by Alicia Keys and U.K. boy band phenom One Direction. The full nominee list is below. Staples Center vendors would be wise to keep their champagne service to small plastic glasses only.

I don't think so at all, she's just touring for BTW and is on like a month vacation.

the fame monster is overrated. also remember that she's only 4 years into her career, her peak has yet to come

thank you, i fucking agree. i only liked maybe 4-5 songs on that album. the fame & btw were more consistent and harmonious imo.

It was definitely when she peaked in popularity / likability. [Almost] everyone was into [some of] her music at that point, and that includes non-fans. Then she messed things up with Born This Way and bought into her own hype.

I guess I can agree with that about tfm. The whole "fiasco" with Born This Way though, what actually happened is quite the opposite of what everyone thinks. she didn't have that much control of the decisions so she tried to take control of things where she could.. So it came across like she was being obnoxious when she wasn't.

this new era seems like it's going to right-the-wrongs of the Born This Way era, she seems in a good place and she wants to have fun again.

ia. I think she went waaaay over the top with BTW and alienated her casual fans.

I agree with you but I don't think she's fading i think she's just been less in the public eye because of touring/not promoting another album. As soon as she releases another one she'll be back on track. She did peak at fame monster but she's barely fading.

I think that may have been her peak with the general public. Non-fans loved at least part of it, whereas now a lot of her diehard fans don't even like what she's doing.

It doesn't matter how long her career has been. An artist can peak just after their very first single, or 2 years later or 10... I do think she peaked, but that doesn't mean she is free falling to obscurity, it just means that she will not be a popular or critically acclaimed as the time she released BTW. I reckon she still has a big enough fanbase that if she does the right moves she'll have a long career.
stussytribe 5th-Aug-2012 08:02 am (UTC)
uh werent there only like 4-5 songs on tfm anyway?
xoxotalli 5th-Aug-2012 11:57 am (UTC)
Lol her peak came in Year 1. It's all downhill from here. Don't be upset, that's just the life cycle of a popstar. It's better to be peak fort and be HUGE than to drift quietly along an have some occassional spikes on the radar tbh.
