That is really rough. In the US there's actually a strong debate that in addition to a free education, college athletes should be paid in addition to having their education paid (because they're so damn profitable for their schools)

Also, I should correct myself -- I just checked, and I guess the American basketball team does do rather well. Everyone I know just mocks them for not treating the Olympics like a big deal /shrug

If there's a cap on how much can be spent on athletes per year, then that's totally fair.

Yeah, I know a few kids from high school who ended up pretty much acting as headliners for their college teams, brought in tons of money from the hype, then they get injured as upperclassmen and their pro dreams are shot and their schools are like "Well hey you've got a degree :D *swims in pool of dollars*" It isn't really fair.
