And the Title of the Third Hobbit Movie Is... (Probably [Possibly (Maybe)])

According to somebody at TheOneRing.net, New Line has registered two potential titles for the brand-new third movie in the recently expanded Hobbit trilogy. Those two titles are...

• The Battle of Five Armies
• The Desolation of Smaug

Now, I have no idea about the trustworthiness of the tipper, so grain of salt, etc. etc., but these both sound pretty reasonable. I think The Battle of Five Armies has a much better ring to it than The Desolation of Smaug -- the latter of which doesn't particularly seem to go with An Unexpected Journey or There and Back Again. But this brings up a couple of questions. It's been a while since I read The Hobbit, but do you think Jackson is going to save Smaug for the third movie? Can he? What the fuck will happen in the second movie, then? Also, doesn't There and Back Again refer to Bilbo's heading out on his adventure, and then coming back to Bag's End? Where is he going to go "back again" to in the second movie, then? I'm not trying to be facetious for once, I honestly don't know. Is this a problem, or am I forgetting something?

My friend on fb has been bitching non stop how there shouldn't be three movies and Peter Jackson is greedy...I'm just like find me one directo in Hollywood that doesn't want to make money doofus
modernelegance 4th-Aug-2012 09:28 pm (UTC)
Wasn't it the studio that wanted three movies though? Peter had announced two and then the studio stated they wanted it to be a trilogy. I could be wrong though...
theflyingbeet 4th-Aug-2012 10:15 pm (UTC)
100% this
mofo_pig 4th-Aug-2012 11:00 pm (UTC)
I'm just confused as to HOW they can make 3 movies. There are 3 Lord of the Rings movies, and each of those books is pretty big. The Hobbit is about half the size of Return of the King and they're going to extend it into 3 films? I just cant really see how.
stebo 4th-Aug-2012 11:51 pm (UTC)
Jackson says he used a lot of material in Tolkien's appendices to fill in the story, such as where the fuck Gandalf is the half the time when he disappears. Apparently there's a ton of backstory.
fight4thislove 4th-Aug-2012 08:53 pm (UTC)
I find it so pointless to turn The Hobbit into a trilogy. I know Peter Jackson is going to go into the Appendices and get more story out of it, but I sort of feel like since The Hobbit has been shot in its entirety, that its merely going to feel like added scenes for the sake of more $$$.
winegums 4th-Aug-2012 09:14 pm (UTC)
ia. I could understand splitting it into two movies, but three is overkill - especially when they managed to fit each of the Lord of the Rings novels into a single movie.

gagglefuck 4th-Aug-2012 09:57 pm (UTC)
ia, but i dont like the idea of the hobbit being made into two movies either
bestieverhad112 5th-Aug-2012 02:22 am (UTC)
me either.
kansassatin 4th-Aug-2012 10:10 pm (UTC)
I totally agree.
sirenlyfox 4th-Aug-2012 10:52 pm (UTC)
Anyone who's read The Hobbit knows that there isn't enough story to hang a trilogy on. My brother says that their banking on people having never read the book and having no intention of reading the book to get away with this daylight robbery and I think he's right. However, as soon as it's released I will be going to watch it. "shrugs"
sursumcorda 4th-Aug-2012 08:55 pm (UTC)
I so wish the second one was called The Hobbit 2: Electric Boogaloo
cerseilannister 4th-Aug-2012 08:55 pm (UTC)
why are there three movies? it was only one book.

or did the author expand on that shit or st
wonderwomanhero 4th-Aug-2012 08:55 pm (UTC)
Peter Jackson decided to extend it into three films for some pointless reason.
cerseilannister 4th-Aug-2012 08:58 pm (UTC)
that makes no sense. i liked the hobbit the best too.

Tolkien has a big world so I wasn't sure.

Tolkien went back and wrote an extra 100 pages of Appendices to add more backstory and background characters that don't have any other reason to be there but to be there.

The Hobbit has always been Tolkien's lesser work when compared to LOTR. It could've been done in one film. Now we get 9 hours (+the inevitable extra HOURS of Extended Edition footage) of new films and New Line will end up making another 3 Billion in Box office sales off this.

I tell you, $$$ is the only reason its now a Trilogy.

ectypes 4th-Aug-2012 08:58 pm (UTC)
he's adding stuff from the appendices, the silmarillion, and tolkien's 5th grade diaries. it's gonna be legit.
kvetchy 4th-Aug-2012 08:56 pm (UTC)
I can't wait until the split the third movie in two to present it in ~stunning three dimensions~

The book sucked as it is and I could read the damned thing aloud in 9 hours.
ooh_mrdarcy 4th-Aug-2012 08:56 pm (UTC)
Uhh these are too long titles tbh.
sparkfactory 4th-Aug-2012 08:56 pm (UTC)
yeah desolation of smaug would never be a movie title ever
ectypes 4th-Aug-2012 09:04 pm (UTC)
it would be fucking hilarious if it were
chihaya19 4th-Aug-2012 08:57 pm (UTC)
no at both of them
punishermax 4th-Aug-2012 09:01 pm (UTC)
Wait wait wait wait wait wait

Three hobbit movies.

The fucking book isn't even that long, how in the name of God is he going to drag it out over three films?

Oh my dear god...I have a real bad feeling now.
ectypes 4th-Aug-2012 09:04 pm (UTC)
he's using every sentence of the book
ljubavirakija 4th-Aug-2012 09:02 pm (UTC)
Three movies seem way too excessive.

They should have only made two
punishermax 4th-Aug-2012 09:04 pm (UTC)
Two is pushing it even.
lordoftheabyss 4th-Aug-2012 09:02 pm (UTC)
This is kinda making me wish the Hobbit was made first so we'd be getting six lotr movies coming out now.

I could live with that.

But smh at turning that tiny book into a trilogy.
wonderwomanhero 4th-Aug-2012 09:04 pm (UTC)
I'm worried about Evangeline Lily tho...idt she can act her way through a paper bag.
fight4thislove 4th-Aug-2012 09:09 pm (UTC)
wait wait wait, Evangeline is in this?

Oh god.
purriing 5th-Aug-2012 12:53 am (UTC)
She's an elf I think, a part that was created for the movie because there are no female characters in the book and I guess they think this will bring in female audience or sth?
evett 4th-Aug-2012 09:14 pm (UTC)
She'll do as well as Liv Tyler did lbr
artemis_archer 4th-Aug-2012 09:18 pm (UTC)
Ikr? She's atrocious
lachica2000 4th-Aug-2012 09:56 pm (UTC)
I can only deal with it by telling myself her attempts to be a fierce warrior will surely be hilarious.
gagglefuck 4th-Aug-2012 10:01 pm (UTC)
i wouldnt mind her as much if i didnt hear about some sort of romance between her and kili(?)
anolinde 4th-Aug-2012 10:05 pm (UTC)
I'm excited for her character, tbh. They've already said she isn't Legolas's love interest, so as far as I'm concerned the more kickass females in Middle-earth the better!
punishermax 4th-Aug-2012 09:07 pm (UTC)
It's a great book but...I'm stunned at this. Like...unless he literally makes the scene with Smeagol it's own film, I can't imagine how this would work'
wintourseason 6th-Aug-2012 09:22 pm (UTC)
hdu, 2 hours of benedict cumberbatch and martin freeman bantering snidely at each other? people would love that. better yet, call it sherlock.
