I tip 15% for average to good service and 20% for great (normal in the uk where servers get min wage, I know you USers tip more)

Srsly tho tipping is oblig due to the really low wages service staff get, even in the UK where it's only about 10-20 depending.
the average minimum wage in the USA for servers is 3.15/hour. without tips, they aren't making shit, regardless of how good they are. it's pretty difficult to live on like, $5o a week after taxes.
To me, I guess I just feel like it's a nice thing to do and that I'm putting something good out in the universe and hopefully I will somehow get a little compassion or kindness back in some way.
however, i work with some girls who are AWFUL, not friendly, stupid and i don't expect them to make 20% tips. 10% for bad service, 12-15% for below average service etc.
you should always leave something though. you're not just paying for food, you're paying for the service and these people are making as low as $2.33/hr.

I tip really high for good service, but I'll tip cents if the service is bad.
ETA: I know not every restaurant is like this but I worked at a fine dining restaurant for several years that refused to pay any of its kitchen staff more than a dollar or two more than minimum wage, and they all had years of experience and came from top-notch culinary schools. Because it was a prestigious restaurant, they could get away with it because they had no shortage of people that wanted to put the restaurant's name on their resume. But, it's definitely not fair that the FOH was making 50,000-100,000K/year (conservatively) while these guys were basically living below the poverty line and could barely afford their rent on shitty basement apartments.

I've lived in countries where tipping is not mandatory (Europe/UK, Japan & Korea) and it was SWEET, because I tipped anyway for good service.
In a lot of these debates though, surprisingly, I've seen that a lot of people who are against making a minimum wage mandatory for servers are servers themselves...probably because on a good night or if they're competent at their job (or lucky) they can make WAY more than minimum. idk.
The rest are relatively vague... but I have no problems with the most likely choices

I've only read one report on it and that was years ago, so I'm not sure how accurate that was. :/
I went to see the new production of the Phantom two nights ago, with John Owen Jones in the lead, and it was perfection. Third time seeing it and I have never been disappointed.
