Harry Potter star to see food crisis firsthand with Oxfam
This week (OP: article was released July 23, 2012) Oxfam is taking English actress, screen writer and director Bonnie Wright out to Senegal to meet victims of the current food crisis in the Sahel region of West Africa.
Bonnie, best known for her part as Ginny Weasley in the Harry Potter films, will be visiting the Kedougou region of Senegal, seeing the impact of the food crisis first hand, meeting families and children who are suffering as a result and witnessing the work Oxfam is doing to alleviate the impact of the crisis.
A combination of factors have taken a heavy toll on the Sahel region: low rainfall and water levels, poor harvests, a lack of pasture and high food prices have led to a dire situation. More than 18 million people are facing serious food shortages across the area and the worst yet to come - with the next harvests not until September/October. Oxfam have warned that if urgent action isn't taken this could escalate into one of the worst humanitarian disasters if the 21st century.
The Sahel region does not ordinarily cover Senegal but the extent of the food crisis has seen it spread to southern parts of the country affecting nearly 850,000 people. Oxfam has a three-phase programme in Senegal ranging from helping people care for their animals and crops, ensuring people gain access to food aid and finally supporting long term recovery.

OP: Her parents are huge supporters of this charity and helped raise funds for Oxfam through Wright & Teague. Annie Lennox, one of the most famous ambassadors of Oxfam, happens to be the mum of two her closest childhood friends, Tali & Lola, so it's not really surprising she's getting involved as well.

(and on a shallower, more ontd typical note, she looks so much cuter/younger when she isn't caked with terrible makeup.)
i've been volunteering at oxfam since february whilst out of work, good for experience and to do something helpful.
