Santa Monica, CA, August 2, 2012 - Lionsgate® and the filmmakers of THE HUNGER GAMES: CATCHING FIRE are pleased to announce that Lynn Cohen has been cast in the role of Mags in the much anticipated film adaptation of Suzanne Collins’ worldwide smash hit novel Catching Fire. A former mentor to Finnick Odair, Mags is an eighty year old Hunger Games victor from District 4. Along the way Katniss senses that a rebellion is simmering, but the Capitol is still very much in control as President Snow prepares the 75th Annual Hunger Games (The Quarter Quell) - a competition that could change Panem forever. THE HUNGER GAMES: CATCHING FIRE will be directed by Francis Lawrence, and produced by Nina Jacobson’s Color Force in tandem with producer Jon Kilik. The novel on which the film is based is the second in a trilogy that has sold more than 50 million books in print and digital in the U.S. alone. Lionsgate will release THE HUNGER GAMES: CATCHING FIRE on November 22, 2013.

Yeah, Peeta was said to have pale skin/BHBE, but he was not described as "White" from what I remember. He still could have been cast mixed.
Katniss and Gale were both said to have black hair, olive skin, and grey eyes and described by the author herself as mixed in interviews and they still White-washed them.
this is the only quote i found from suzanne on race "They were not particularly intended to be biracial. It is a time period where hundreds of years have passed from now. There’s been a lot of ethnic mixing."
i googled, but i am seeing a lot of ppl saying she said they were biracial without the quote itself. mixed ethnicity and mixed race are diff.
i am not saying this couldnt have been an opportunity to cast poc, but the characters arent poc that have been cast as white people, they are vague
this is the only quote i found from suzanne on race
Back during earlier THG posts, people were posting quotes from her as proof. I'm assuming what I remember was the "there’s been a lot of ethnic mixing" line. My mistake.
Regardless, there is still a problem here:
the characters arent poc that have been cast as white people, they are vague
According to the casting calls, Katniss's role was advertised as "should be Caucasian" and was closed off to non-White actresses. So the problem still remains that a "vague" character was once again interpreted as the "White default" without even considering POCs.
There's nothing to agree on here, because we both have completely opposing opinions. And I'm pretty tried of talking about it right now, so I will bow out. Thanks for keeping this conversation mature and without personal insults while it lasted. (I know that's a bit rare in race posts on ONTD.)
