Despite leaving “Saturday Night Live” in May after seven seasons with the program, Kristen Wiig says she’s in a great place at the moment. The 38-year-old comedienne told the August issue of Marie Claire that her budding romance with Strokes drummer Fabrizio Moretti, 32, is part of the reason for her contentment. “I will say that I’m happier than I’ve ever been,” she said, “and I feel very lucky right now.”
When asked the reasons why she feels fortunate, Wiig explained, “Where I am now. Who he is. Those are the two big ones.” Her departure from “SNL” left many fans wondering why Wiig, a popular fixture on the show, would want to quit. “I know a lot of people probably assume, ‘Oh, she’s leaving because she is going to be doing movies now and things like that,’ which I will be,” she said. “But I just always knew it was going to be seven and that was it.”
Wiig notes that perhaps if she were younger, she would have continued with “SNL” for longer. “I think maybe if I were 22, I could see myself staying a little bit, but it just felt like the right time,” she said. Although her exit from the show was difficult, her final episode proved to be “very emotional” for Wiig. “I just wanted to get through it without breaking down in every sketch,” she said. “Because nothing says comedy like breaking down.”
As for the future, the “Bridesmaids” star is set to appear in three major film projects: “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty” opposite Ben Stiller, “The Comedian” opposite Robert De Niro and “Imogene” opposite Darren Criss. Regardless of her next appearances on the silver screen, Wiig told the mag that she’s most looking forward to her future with Moretti.
“When you’re on your deathbed, you probably aren’t counting the movies you’ve made,” she said. “You’re looking at the people who are around you and thinking about the people in your life, and you can’t lose how important that is because that’s ultimately where happiness comes from.”
