It's not the horse's fault she didn't set it up right for the jump. It looks like they were off about half a stride and the horse was like, "NOPE."

Love it or hate it, horseback riding is about establishing a trusting relationship between horse and rider, and here you can see the relationship is lacking. That horse wasn't scared when it trotted away - it was just over the whole thing.

I don't know. One of my friends rode competitively for years and she didn't beat her horses.

Some people will disagree with this, but competitive riders sometimes use whips for various reasons and it isn't considered beating or abuse. So, I guess I want to know if her abuse was using a whip in a way many horse people do sometimes OR if she was actually abusing the horse in public. If she was abusing the horse in public she must have a lot of money/power in the circle if no one said or did anything.

there are definitely rules about how a whip is allowed to be used. in general the rules say no abuse of whip, but more specifically the rules are - can't hit a horse more than 3 times, can't use it if you're angry and just taking it out on the horse, can't use it overhand, can't use it on their head, and can't use it if you've been disqualified (either by the horse stopping at the jump multiple times, or by falling off), and can't break skin.

i'm not sure what exactly happened, but if she hit her horse after she fell off, she probably got a warning. if it happens more often, she could get fined or eliminated.

it depends, sometimes the USEF or FEI will deem it excessive but it's really common practice in showjumping and you'd be surprised how little it actually hurts the horse, it's a scare tactic to correct behaviour like stopping at a jump

my family once owned a horse that had been abused at shows. Basically they would get there, get the horse off the trailer and just ride it until it was time for that event, even if it was hours later. whips and spurs would be used. don't even get me started on people who abuse the horse with spurs

but yeah, some people feel like a whip is an acceptable form of punishment. the only time I ever whipped my horse, and it was one half decent smack, was because he viciously kicked out at another horse with a rider on while they went past. The other rider could have been seriously hurt, and the brat never did it again haha. I may have carried a crop or a whip with me, but normally it was in my boot instead of in my hands
