Wow! Benedict Cumberbatch's fans raise over $11,000 for charity in honor of his birthday.

Whether you're a fan of Benedict or not, I thought that it would be nice to share this heartwarming news. :)

Six weeks ago the unofficial fansite, CumberbatchWeb started a donation drive for the Teenage Cancer Trust in honor of Benedict's birthday. Originally hoping to raise 250 pounds, fans rallied together and surpassed it by thousands!

The fundraiser was set up without his knowledge, but Benedict was told about it last week when the site owner met him during his WWI Poetry reading at Cheltenham Music Festival. He didn't find out about the sum until today.

The website's tumblr has posted the following message:

"In case you missed it on twitter Benedict has kindly sent a thank you message via his friend for the fundraising.

Benedict said:

“The amount of effort, love, joy and celebration as well as money raised! I’m speechless. Pls pass on my love and gratitude. Thank you!! Bx”

Really incredibly sweet of him to take the time to do that.

And the collection now stands at over £7000! Thank you so so much to everyone who contributed. I never could have imagined in a million years that Benedict’s wonderful fans would raise so much!"

ETA: It's made it to Radio Times!

I'm also including a video interview which was made during the festival. In it, he gives some information about Parade's End as well as his part in 12 Years A slave.

Happy birthday Mr. Cumberbatch!

That's such a cool thing for fans to do. The teenage cancer trust is a great cause.

wauwy 19th-Jul-2012 01:04 pm (UTC)
They think he is the hottest man who ever lived.
morant_bay 19th-Jul-2012 01:07 pm (UTC)
really, now... interesting.
chocoiste 19th-Jul-2012 01:05 pm (UTC)
lol yes they rallied and got him voted like the hottest male actor or something a few weeks ago
dives 19th-Jul-2012 01:08 pm (UTC)
well, yeah

they're fans, that's how that works
cabernet 19th-Jul-2012 01:11 pm (UTC)
I thought he was oddly attractive when I first started Sherlock, then seeing more of him irl kinda stomped all the flames out of that
natosh 19th-Jul-2012 01:30 pm (UTC)
mte. he looks like an ugly bug
78ml 19th-Jul-2012 02:08 pm (UTC)
ikr? it;'s hilarious how all these bitches cream over his ugly ass
xel_squirgle_ox 19th-Jul-2012 03:14 pm (UTC)
I do find him attractive, but being a performer myself I mainly look up to him as an inspiration. Because seriously, he's a DAMN good actor.

But then again I'm not every one of his fans.
*shrug*
coryrain 19th-Jul-2012 03:54 pm (UTC)
I'm a fan! I don't think he's hot, but I think he's a hell of an actor. There is the occasional photo that pops up that makes me think "hmm, look at this GQ mutherfucker." But that only happens when they crop our his giant five head. Sorry Benedict. I like you, but you have a hell of a lot of forehead.
shadowfax 19th-Jul-2012 01:05 pm (UTC)
That's nice of them
kwikimart 19th-Jul-2012 01:05 pm (UTC)
Good deed tbh, I'm glad they are using their creepy obsession to do something nice for once

Man that guy tho....with a face only a blind mother could love
tundrabeast 19th-Jul-2012 01:06 pm (UTC)
I'm not being funny but with the amount of Cumberbatch-fans there are, 7000 doesn't seem like a huge number. Well done to them anyway it's still great.
imnotasquirrel 19th-Jul-2012 01:06 pm (UTC)
trying to think of some sort of lizard joke i can make here, but i can't think of any rn.

maybe something about how they could have raised it for the reptile conservation society or something, idk.
wauwy 19th-Jul-2012 01:11 pm (UTC)
You might say the money will be awarded on a SLIDING SCALE system
kwikimart 19th-Jul-2012 01:12 pm (UTC)
NO

damn we're all struggling today, usually we are better than this
kwikimart 19th-Jul-2012 01:12 pm (UTC)
Yeah I struggled a bit too
I went with an ugly comment and I guess I'll just do better in the next post

I like your reptile conservation thing tho! Maybe "Good of them to do that but I was surprised they didn't donate to the reptile conservation society instead as that is a cause very close to his heart"

dives 19th-Jul-2012 01:09 pm (UTC)
That's 7000 pounds, not dollars, so they actually raised about $11K for the charity. That's pretty cool.
mmmdraco 19th-Jul-2012 01:21 pm (UTC)
Here to say this.

It's cool anytime people decide to give money to charity, whatever the reason, and this is significantly better than the people who go out and buy gifts for celebs, and better even than all of those online projects of writing your celeb a letter and enclosing a photo. This is significantly less creepy and doesn't make you look like a loser for participating in.
elychari 19th-Jul-2012 02:20 pm (UTC)
its very nice of his fans. and very adult to do. i hate those creepy fancreations sent to celebrities.
xel_squirgle_ox 19th-Jul-2012 02:44 pm (UTC)
I so agree with this!
xel_squirgle_ox 19th-Jul-2012 02:40 pm (UTC)
Ah, thanks for the clarification! I'll put that in right now.
wauwy 19th-Jul-2012 01:10 pm (UTC)
OK but seriously now, good on those fans for channeling their energy in a positive way. Now if they could just tone down their fanaticism and try to keep perspective in other contexts, we'd be getting somewhere. But, baby steps.

And I'm not gonna claim that the superfandoms do it better because that would just be rude and unnecessary!
getbacknow 19th-Jul-2012 02:17 pm (UTC)
haha that was my idea, why did no one post about me in ontd tho :(
wauwy 19th-Jul-2012 02:19 pm (UTC)
idk, but I support you, bb.
hobnailedboots 19th-Jul-2012 01:14 pm (UTC)
:D this makes me happy
bodyline 19th-Jul-2012 01:15 pm (UTC)
Damn, that's fantastic. Nice to see them banning together for a good deed!!
bohemianvixen 19th-Jul-2012 01:23 pm (UTC)
Looks-wise, I don't think he's repulsive as people here like to say. I wouldn't call him beautiful (not to me, anyway), but I wouldn't call him ugly, either. Unconventional-looking, yes.

I mean, seriously, where do you all live that Benedict Cumberbatch is the ugliest man you've ever seen? Coz I'm moving there.

sandvich 19th-Jul-2012 01:27 pm (UTC)
ikr? He's definitely odd-looking, but we live in a world where Steve Buscemi exists. Therefore, Benedict cannot be the ugliest person in it. QED.
imnotasquirrel 19th-Jul-2012 01:30 pm (UTC)
fine, he's runner-up. HAPPY?

oh, wait, i forgot about Beans from Even Stevens. FINE, then benedict is in third place.
wauwy 19th-Jul-2012 02:08 pm (UTC)
Our insistence on his ugliness is mostly in proportion to Tumblr etc's insistence that he is the hottest man who ever lived, ESPESH because of his personality and talent etc, and anyone who doesn't see that is SHALLOWuh in true Emperor's New Clothes logic.

We have to maintain sanity and reiterate reality here. Otherwise it will be like 1984 where 2+2=5.
lilyy 19th-Jul-2012 01:25 pm (UTC)
thats pretty impressive and for a good cause as well
