Sam Claflin Reportedly Offered Role of Finnick In 'Catching Fire,' Melissa Leo/Tony Shaloub Too

Sources tell Zap2it exclusively that the most coveted role in "The Hunger Games" sequel "Catching Fire" has been cast -- and British actor Sam Claflin has got the gig. Official reps for the film won't comment on the casting, but our reliable sources reveal that producer Nina Jacobson and Lionsgate have signed off on Clafin's offer.

Now he just has to accept the role!

Claflin beat out actors like Jennifer Lawrence's "X-Men: The First Class" costar Lucas Till and "90210" hunk Trevor Donovan for the role -- as well as more recognizable names, like Armie Hammer and Garrett Hedlund.

The British actor is best known for playing Kristen Stewart's childhood sweetheart, William, in "Snow White and the Huntsman." He also had a role in "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides," as Philip.

Is he the Finnick you pictured, "Hunger Games" fans?

i always thought he was short but apparently he's 5'11". meh.

ETA:
Variety has confirmed frontrunner status for Sam Claflin and added Melissa Leo for Mags and Tony Shaloub for Beetee.

If any of my shit ever manages to get a film adaptation I'm going to be firm as FUCK when it comes to casting the right ethnicities.
calcified 17th-Jul-2012 08:13 pm (UTC)
But no one (i.e. the book) said this character was any particular race.
itscomicrelief 17th-Jul-2012 08:15 pm (UTC)
I guess, I'm just pressed at the fact that there's too many white people in a movie about the future where everyone's pretty much mixed.
imnotasquirrel 17th-Jul-2012 08:16 pm (UTC)
True, but do you honestly think that they opened up the casting call to all races? After we saw what they did with Katniss?

Granted, Katniss was the lead, so they were probably more invested in making sure she was white (because heaven forbid that a white person not be the protagonist) than they'd be for Finnick. But I still have my doubts.
oh_myblueheaven 17th-Jul-2012 08:17 pm (UTC)
mte. He was very much described to pretty much look like a fucking Ken doll, California surfer boy, who has a slight tan from the sun, not a tan because he is ethnic.
xevochic 17th-Jul-2012 08:18 pm (UTC)
Why do people always feel the need to use this defense as if "no race mentioned" means it's okay to automatically assume White?

No, his race isn't mentioned which means that he could have been a POC. And since there are way more non-White races then there are Whites, that means the odds should be forever in POC's favour. Yet look at that damn cast list.
lcacbc 17th-Jul-2012 08:28 pm (UTC)
Bronze hair and golden skin? I always took that as white tbh. Unlike Rue and Thresh, who were blatantly not.
megalixer 17th-Jul-2012 08:15 pm (UTC)
he's a redhead in the books though, isn't he? which is not to say that it's an integral part of his character and that they couldn't or shouldn't have cast a POC, but it's not whitewashing the way that the casting of Katniss and most of the D12 people was.
lillyluna 17th-Jul-2012 08:15 pm (UTC)
IKR? I'm so glad JKR was so firm about it, Rosie O'Donnell tried everything she could to get the part of Molly Weasley. Can you imagine.
iamtheliquorr 18th-Jul-2012 02:14 am (UTC)
This whole mess has taught me that I have to be specific as fuq about the ethnic background of my characters

Ofc they'd prob still try to whitewash it but I'd have more of a leg to stand on
a_anime_addict 18th-Jul-2012 02:45 am (UTC)
Any author who gets something adapted should be firm about their characters and their storylines. Sometimes I think authors should be given as much, if not more, decision making power as producers. Or at least the ability to approve/deny the final cut.

We might get better film adaptions.
lady_lovey 19th-Jul-2012 10:43 pm (UTC)
FUCKING RIGHT.

(Although I'd prefer it it TV form; more character development that way.)
lady_iriska 17th-Jul-2012 08:12 pm (UTC)
I just wanted them to pick someone who can act, so thankfully it's not Jesse Williams.
angela_stjoan 17th-Jul-2012 09:02 pm (UTC)
Lol rn. Kinda scared for your life tho bb.
ladyaucifer 17th-Jul-2012 10:03 pm (UTC)
I actually agree with this. After all the Jesse Williams hype here, I checked him out on Grey's Anatomy. I was not impressed by his acting.
sleepviking 18th-Jul-2012 02:12 am (UTC)
Have you ever seen Sam in anything though? Because he sucks too.
draion 21st-Jul-2012 01:41 pm (UTC)
While I think Jesse Williams was just another bandwagon opportunity on ONTD (despite the fact that he's pretty hot and very charming), Sam can't really act. He was the worst part of SWATH, imo.
danceprincess20 17th-Jul-2012 08:12 pm (UTC)
In some pictures he is really attractive and in some he's really...hot.
la_petite_singe 17th-Jul-2012 08:13 pm (UTC)
I'm...actually kinda HFT. I thought he was adorable in On Stranger Tides, though I'm fucked if I can remember a second of the actual plot. I just remember that I wanted to bang most of the cast.
lillyluna 17th-Jul-2012 08:14 pm (UTC)
No. Sorry, not good enough.
oh_myblueheaven 17th-Jul-2012 08:14 pm (UTC)
Pretty sure he's actually 6 foot something.
I think he's going to be really great. He's actually an ace actor, and he has the looks. He's always been my second pick for Finnick after Garrett Hedlund.
Using my Sam icon to celebrate because I really really hope this shit is true!
robertsbox_xo 17th-Jul-2012 08:18 pm (UTC)
imdb says 5'11" idk
oh_myblueheaven 17th-Jul-2012 08:27 pm (UTC)
i'd say at least 6. next to Chris Hemsworth who is like 6'4-5 he looks about 6 feet. guessing anyways.
xevochic 17th-Jul-2012 08:15 pm (UTC)
So once again all the POCs (sans Cinna) will be characters who all die or just members of the Plantation District again. Classy.
acidpops7 17th-Jul-2012 08:16 pm (UTC)
Cinna dies too in this one, right?
devon_carrots 17th-Jul-2012 08:18 pm (UTC)
yup
lovedhurtlost 17th-Jul-2012 08:18 pm (UTC)
Yup.
xevochic 17th-Jul-2012 08:21 pm (UTC)
GRRRRRRL I was trying to not spoil ppl. D:

And technically his death isn't confirmed until Mockingjay.
iamtheliquorr 18th-Jul-2012 02:16 am (UTC)
pretty much

gotta love hollywood
ponpiri 18th-Jul-2012 07:21 am (UTC)
Idk I mean that's how Collins wrote them. I don't think she put much thought into the "race" of her characters besides making a statement about stereotypes with Rue and Thresh only tbh
oh7 18th-Jul-2012 12:47 pm (UTC)
lol People think Rue's district is the plantation district?
okay_awesome 17th-Jul-2012 08:15 pm (UTC)
Definitely not who I pictured, but I love him so I am completely okay with this. Which is a first when it comes to the main, young male actors in this movie series...
unbirthdayalice 17th-Jul-2012 08:15 pm (UTC)
garrett was my first choice for finnick, but i think he's a good pick. i trust the casting directors. i thought jennifer and josh were horrible picks, but i ended up loving them as katniss and peeta. if this is true, i'm sure he'll do a great job as finnick.
spree_is_me 17th-Jul-2012 08:16 pm (UTC)
No thanks.
megalixer 17th-Jul-2012 08:17 pm (UTC)
he's pretty, I guess, but meh. I've seen both Pirates 4 and SWATH and I had no idea who he was or that he was in them until now.
p2bab 17th-Jul-2012 08:17 pm (UTC)
I don't care if I come across as xenophobic. But really? ANOTHER white British actor? Zzzzzzzz
lovedhurtlost 17th-Jul-2012 08:18 pm (UTC)
Ew... The flop prince from SWATH? Ugh, no thanks.
maeir 17th-Jul-2012 08:19 pm (UTC)
so...the new cast is white, white and more NO POC

whatever

as long as the movie/script is good
comaeffigy 17th-Jul-2012 08:20 pm (UTC)
Noooooo

1. Whitey mcwhite white - so sick of this BS
2. He looks SO much like my ex (less attractive tho), I feel really uncomfortable watching him in films. Especially in that exact scene of POTC
