During the fourth hour of NBC's morning show on Monday, co-hosts Hoda Kotb and Kathie Lee Gifford were talking with E! correspondent Jason Kennedy about Aretha Franklin wanting to be a judge on "American Idol," a story which CNN first reported.

Holy shit, my wig went into witness protection just reading that. Aretha's resume shades more people than an eclipse, tbh. ONTD, if there were a Pop Olympics, what would the events be? Who would be the winners? Gold in Shading will always go to the QUEEN.

1. Yes, because you have to fly EVERYWHURR to be an Idol judge. RME.
2. Who gives a fuck if kids don't know who she is? It's embarrassing and the best way to mend that situation is to put her on Idol. That's like the rules of musicology 101. It's the duty of elders to let kids in on the fact that Aretha is the Queen of Soul.

Apparently the rumor is they want to get the tweens to start watching again..that's why allegedly all the judges will be kicked off and they are going for younger people. Aretha doesn't fit in with that context.

But aren't tweens watching the problem now? I don't watch Idol anymore, but I know just from ONTD and other various news outlets that basically the same white dude has won for the last few years.

They should just accept that Idol has run its course/past its expiration date and call it a fucking day. If they want a younger audience, they might as turn it into a new show by renaming it teen idol and get Bieber/Jonas/Miley/Selena to judge. Of course, they might alienate all their adult viewers and end up in the same place.

Ummm... Aretha is a LEGEND and most people are aware of who she is. It's no different than Steven Tyler (actually it is since she's more well known).

My mom met her in person at a fan-signing a few years back. She said she looked into the Queen's eyes and saw the weariness of the world, like she had given up all hope in humanity. I have no idea what that means, but I'm gonna need a icy glass of lemonade for this refreshing shade.
