Patton Oswalt (and other comedians) Defend Daniel Tosh

In the wake of a female audience member accusing Daniel Tosh of making a rape joke at her expense, comedians have taken to Twitter to comment on the controversy.

While numerous comedy fans and professionals have tweeted messages condemning Tosh's response to the female heckler, some comedy figures, including Jim Norton, Louis C.K. and Opie of The Opie & Anthony Show, have expressed support for Tosh and for a comedians' right to speak uncensored.

Dane Cook, who performed at The Laugh Factory on the same night as Tosh, had a darker message: easily offended people should kill themselves.
Not familiar with Anthony Jeselnik but his tweet was the worst I've seen.

I can't remember exactly, but he was making a bunch of stupid unfunny jokes about rape, and a woman in the audience shouted out that rape isn't funny, so then he said something along the lines of "wouldn't it be hysterical if she got gang-raped?"
asdfjklkjhfds 12th-Jul-2012 02:16 am (UTC)
he was apparently going on about how funny rape jokes are so the woman in the audience shouted out that they're never funny, so he said something like "wouldn't it be funny if that woman got gang raped rn"

I've decided that I can deal with Patton in Ratatouille because I don't see him and as far as I know he had nothing to do with writing it. Other than that, he's dead to me.

I don't see how suggesting a woman (who was actually in the room at the time) should be gang raped even counts as a joke. Personally I find most rape jokes to be fucking stupid (unless they're commentary on why rape is bad) but what he did is a whole different arena of fuckery than just making a rape joke.
laserina 12th-Jul-2012 02:17 am (UTC)
he really isn't the first but really if every comedian who has said some offense joke and got blacklisted or whatever there really would be no comedians. :/

_lemeurtre_ 12th-Jul-2012 02:34 am (UTC)
exactly. I wasn't even going to comment on this because I could take or leave Daniel Tosh, but when I saw there was a petition to take him off Comedy Central, I realized how ridiculously out of proportion this was getting blown.
celtic_thistle 12th-Jul-2012 03:24 am (UTC)
mkay but there's a difference between joking about offensive things and seriously suggesting someone deserves to be gang raped. He wasn't joking--he was serious, and the fact that there's not much of a line between joking about rape as a "punishment" and actually suggesting it SHOULD happen is pretty fucked up.

Edited at 2012-07-12 03:24 am (UTC)
antique_faery 13th-Jul-2012 05:32 pm (UTC)
Good. Then a fresh batch of people who were actually in possession of wit over trying to be a shocking asshole for attention would take over.
klmnumbers 12th-Jul-2012 02:19 am (UTC)
I'm kinda between things on this whole situation. I think the initial joke might be OK just because comedians do always push the boundaries of what is appropriate to joke about - it's the medium.

Where I take issue is his comment that the woman should be gang raped where it's no longer a joke made in bad taste and becomes a threatening, horrible comment designed to put her in fear.

I think most of them are defending his right to make jokes, but they're ignoring the much most insidious second half of what he said.
stellarlyssa 12th-Jul-2012 02:19 am (UTC)
I think it's not SO much the initial rape joke/s as the comment that it would be hilarious if the audience member got gang raped.
youbeboy 12th-Jul-2012 02:20 am (UTC)
Yeah, you're the only one. It's not like this entire post is about people not taking what he said seriously or anything.

arabian 12th-Jul-2012 02:29 am (UTC)
he's not the first person to make a rape joke and he won't be the last.

THAT right there is the problem. If we just let it slide when it happens because 'eh, it happened before, it's gonna happen again,' then we're saying there's nothing wrong with it. There is something very, very wrong with the pervasive casual downplaying of the horror of rape.

Edited at 2012-07-12 02:30 am (UTC)
sugary_placenta 12th-Jul-2012 02:34 am (UTC)
Saying that it would be hilarious if she, someone who was in the room and was offended by a rape joke (which she has the right to be), got raped by 5 guys that night is incredibly offensive and not funny at all. That is when it crossed the line, for me at least. If he had to resort to that "joke" as a reply to her being offended then he needs to reevaluate his comedic talent.
violue 12th-Jul-2012 02:58 am (UTC)

mikeblitzz 12th-Jul-2012 05:23 am (UTC)
I'm usually one to say how this generation is breeding a slew of sensitive sallies, but this rape joke wasn't funny because of how suggestive it was. Him saying what he said and suggesting how funny it would be is just extremely inappropriate considering the scene. A lot of comedy clubs serve liquor and depending on the type of crowd the place attracts, it could have definitely been a major factor in what could have resulted in an unfortunate incident.
slayer_the12 12th-Jul-2012 05:48 am (UTC)

"Daniel Tosh perpetuates rape culture and his response to that “heckler” was to silence her, which is what happens when women speak up and demand to be treated as humans with feelings who do not want to be treated as jokes and do not want to have the most humiliating violation of their bodies to be punchlines. As long as Tosh is on the air, men will continue to see nothing wrong with rape and rape culture—and the women who speak out against it are “bitches” and “ignorant sluts”.”

-— Kathleen Quinlan, http://www.change.org/petitions/ceo-comedy-central-take-daniel-tosh-off-the-air

This is why it pisses me off, comedians feel entitled to make jokes about what could be the most traumatizing experience to a woman. ugh I can't with this race culture we live in.

So 1 person gets offended and Tosh should be taken off the air because you don't agree with a way he dealt with a heckler at a show that none of you were even at? The most you should do is just don't watch his show and don't go to any of his live shows. Why does everyone feel the need to over react and feel the need to take something from him because he said a few jokes you didn't like. It's a mind boggling mentality that anyone thinks it's alright to tell someone they can't say something because a few people aren't gonna like it. Most jokes offend someone of a particular background, not all are gonna fly obviously. If you think the joke wasn't funny thats fine, but don't interrupt the show. A lot of other people paid to see the show and you're just ruining their time with your self important heckling. If you think the joke was offensive, that's fine as well, just leave. Don't act like anyone owes you anything though because you were offended. Basically you have the right to disagree but you don't have the right to not be offended and tell someone what they should or should not say.

i don't condone rape jokes or anything, but i feel like people usually make them because hyperbole helps them become desensitized. perhaps if you've never experienced anything like rape, but it's still a major fear of yours, you might try to lessen the shock value for you by talking about it casually or something. while i don't think that's a good thing, i don't think people should hate on a defense mechanism.

however, in this particular case, Tosh was clearly doing it for the shock value--and actually directing it to someone else makes it 100% worse. and then these other assholes on twitter are defending him...if they were just his friends who have his back they could say "he didn't mean it like that" or something, but they take it to the next level by exacerbating the situation with their own crude humor. it's sad.

and the worst part is, he could have just apologized, but instead he made it worse on purpose, so fuck him.

um wtf the problem with rape is that it's already treated casually as hell
famineaffair 12th-Jul-2012 02:18 am (UTC)
but do you think people treat it casually because they think it's nbd, or because they want to separate themselves from the reality of it?
comalies 12th-Jul-2012 02:18 am (UTC)
Nah, I'm pretty sure they're just assholes.

I do believe that a lot of people place blame on rape victims (shouldn't have worn that, shouldn't have been out that late, shouldn't have been drinking, etc., etc.) as a way to make them feel like it could never happen to them. It makes them feel more safe. But I absolutely will hate on that defense mechanism, because it has a very real affect on actual victims. Police often don't take them seriously, when they share things with people they're made to feel as though it's their fault that something that horrible happened to them. So my sympathies lie with actual victims, not with people who have defense mechanisms.
