Scout Holmes Goes to the Zoo

Katie Holmes and daughter Suri were pictured earlier today (July 11) enjoying yet another 'mother/daughter' day out, this time the actress took her six year old daughter to Central Park zoo.

The pair were also joined by Katie's mother Kathleen, as they were all pictured looking happy as they watched the penguins swim around in the New York City tourist attraction.

Since the unexpected split, it looks like Katie has been doing whatever she can to take control of Suri's life and is even considering changing the six year-old's name as she attempts to cut links with her ex-hubby Tom Cruise after filing for divorce just ten days ago.

According to Now Magazine she wants to remove all influences from her daughter, who she was awarded primary custody of following the couple's divorce settlement announced on Monday (July 8) and wants to change her name from 'Suri Cruise' to 'Scout Holmes'.

An insider told the magazine: “She's been telling friends she wants to make Suri's middle name Cruise and change her surname to Holmes”

“She hates the name Suri, so she gave her a nickname from To Kill A Mockingbird,” the source added.

It's weird to actually see other children around Suri. They both look happy though. Love it.

Aww, that's sad. Tom seems to be a pretty good dad if you take away the scientology aspect. He seems to really love her.

I doubt Katie would change her last name. If anything it'd be Scout Holmes-Cruise or something.
infinite_drag 11th-Jul-2012 11:31 pm (UTC)
idk about that, he didn't seem to be around much these last few yrs :(
thelovehater 14th-Jul-2012 01:50 am (UTC)
That isn't really true, Suri & Katie were with him during the majority of the MI:4 filming, they were with him when they were filming Rock of Ages. They were even with him for the majority of this year up until the point when Katie was doing her press stuff in Beijing. Katie and Suri spend more time together, but up until right before the divorce stuff broke Tom was very much in the picture.
squishinator 12th-Jul-2012 12:55 am (UTC)
it says she'd make cruise the middle name and holmes the surname, so i guess it'd be scout cruise holmes.

its horrible tbh
thelovehater 14th-Jul-2012 01:55 am (UTC)
I agree with all you're saying.

latexana 11th-Jul-2012 10:48 pm (UTC)
having three surnames myself, I always found weird how many cultures the costume is to only have one surname. what about your other parent???
bellwetherr 11th-Jul-2012 10:55 pm (UTC)
well in america, the tradition is that the woman takes the husband's name. so they all have the same surname.

but its becoming way more frequent to hyphenate.
latexana 11th-Jul-2012 11:23 pm (UTC)
were I live the costume is the woman adding her husband surname to her own, but not giving up hers. and no hyphen either. hyphenating names is weird.
liebestorys 11th-Jul-2012 11:05 pm (UTC)
me too.
why only take the father's name?
vanishingbee 11th-Jul-2012 11:11 pm (UTC)
it's from history, where women couldn't hold titles under their name, etc.
retahdedtim 11th-Jul-2012 11:11 pm (UTC)
What happens when you have a kid? Do they take your three surnames plus their father's two or three surnames?
sarmoti 11th-Jul-2012 11:38 pm (UTC)
I know a few people here with their mom's maiden name as a second middle name. No one uses it though, I mean, it's on their birth certificate, passport, etc in general they go by FirstName Dad'sLastName and that's it. The full names don't fit on a lot of documents tbh (like on billing addresses, credit cards, etc), the names always get cut short or mangled. Don't know what they'll do with their names when they marry, but I think they will shorten them instead of adding husband's name to the end of it.
infinite_drag 11th-Jul-2012 11:41 pm (UTC)
Not 100% related to your comment, but you know what's quite fucked up? I'm of eastern european ancestry, and what they do is make a middle surname out of your father's first name.

Like, my dad's name is Nikolai, so my middle name is Nikolaeva.

I don't understand what the point of that is... Maybe it's so when you lose your maiden name when you marry, you still have something left to tie you to the family you originally were a part of? Or maybe it's a pissing contest between the men in a woman's life trying to claim authority over her???

theavenue 11th-Jul-2012 11:51 pm (UTC)
I can't imagine ever giving up my surname when/if I get married, or only calling my kid my husband's name, either. I'd want it to have both names for sure and I would too.
alquilaunhombre 12th-Jul-2012 12:06 am (UTC)
i always thought it was strange that we still do that (only take the father's name)

in my family my mom took my dad's name, but what would usually be my middle name is my second first name and my middle name is my mother's maiden name
jennitarox 12th-Jul-2012 12:31 am (UTC)
Exactly, I use two. And I always found it strange that women changed their surnames to their husband's in some places.
celtic_thistle 12th-Jul-2012 12:40 am (UTC)
DUDE I KNOW. I'm getting married next month and hyphenating, and I'd kinda like any kid of ours to have both our last names, but they're both relatively long so idk, and fiance isn't enthusiastic about it.
winegums 12th-Jul-2012 01:48 am (UTC)
idek, it's weird. Like officially, I come from a culture where all kids usually use their dad's first name as their last name, and that is officially my name...but then there is a family name after that, which I can also use by rights (it's not on any of my official docs tho).

But I find it encouraging that a lot of girls in my generation who are getting married choose to keep their maiden names/just tack their husband's name onto the name they already have.
clairelittleton 11th-Jul-2012 10:48 pm (UTC)
scout is 10 million times better than suri, but for some reason i'm not sure i believe that bit. i do believe that scuri looks all kinds of happier than she ever has before. as far as pap pics go.
gimmeachipwich 12th-Jul-2012 05:11 pm (UTC)
scuri lol reminds me of scurvy ew
eaglefan2011 11th-Jul-2012 10:49 pm (UTC)
Suri and Scout are both horrible but i'd stick with Suri
leitao 11th-Jul-2012 10:49 pm (UTC)
Aww, I like the name Suri. XD
dynamitered 11th-Jul-2012 10:50 pm (UTC)
I've never liked the name Suri tbh. It sounds like an intergalactic space computer.
distant_lines 11th-Jul-2012 10:54 pm (UTC)
Where did it ever come from?
celtic_thistle 12th-Jul-2012 12:40 am (UTC)
There's a Scientology connection with Surrey, England. :/
camillesaens 12th-Jul-2012 12:42 am (UTC)
It's old Hebrew for Sarah...but some think its because where the first Scientology church was: Surrey, England.
blackkdiamond 11th-Jul-2012 10:50 pm (UTC)
Scout is such an adorable name, I have always wished that my parents named me that.
whitewatergirl 11th-Jul-2012 10:52 pm (UTC)
Mia Farrow changed all her kids' names after the breakup with her son-in-law, Woody Allen.
distant_lines 11th-Jul-2012 10:54 pm (UTC)
That whole situation still grosses me out and gives me life all at the same time.
infinite_drag 11th-Jul-2012 11:42 pm (UTC)
this
expectingmore 12th-Jul-2012 04:55 am (UTC)
same
moddchicc 11th-Jul-2012 11:01 pm (UTC)
LOL, she changed the names of all 16 kids?
browniecakemix 11th-Jul-2012 11:01 pm (UTC)
Christ, that sentence sounds just as twisted as the entire situation was, tbh.

But I think she only changed Satchel's name to Ronan, not the names of the others (and have you heard tell of Ronan lately btw because apparently he's a supergenius and also cute as hell).
hearthecity 11th-Jul-2012 11:06 pm (UTC)
lol
browniecakemix 11th-Jul-2012 11:27 pm (UTC)
Oop, apparently I was wrong, as Dylan now goes by Malone. But I think she might have changed her name herself (as opposed to Mia changing it).
infinite_drag 11th-Jul-2012 11:42 pm (UTC)
son in law lol
expectingmore 12th-Jul-2012 04:56 am (UTC)
lol I had to re-read that about 6 times
chimbleysweep 11th-Jul-2012 10:53 pm (UTC)
Scout is the best name of all time.
artemisofluna 12th-Jul-2012 04:50 am (UTC)
LOL I was thinking of you when I read this :D
distant_lines 11th-Jul-2012 10:53 pm (UTC)
I'd so freaking love it if Katie started making these changes with Suri, like her name, and if Tom bitched she'd just be like "She says Scout was her name in a past life". Just troll his ass, gurl!
lanculus 11th-Jul-2012 10:55 pm (UTC)
Why is she always, ALWAYS throwing a tantrum? Jesus christ.
vehiclesshockme 11th-Jul-2012 10:56 pm (UTC)
She looks happy in these pics. She's just hiding her face from the paparazzi in the ones where Katie is holding her. If you watch video of them all up in her face I don't blame the kid. I don't think she's throwing a tantrum here at all.
soul_amazinn 11th-Jul-2012 11:00 pm (UTC)
where do you see her throwing a tantrum in these pics?
she's hiding her face from the papz.
69love_songs 11th-Jul-2012 11:04 pm (UTC)
Coz she's 6 perhaps?

And anyway, she isn't.
mellarks 11th-Jul-2012 11:34 pm (UTC)

Perhaps because she is six and is always dealing with this? And she's not throwing a tantrum. She's hiding her face from paps she obviously hates.
alquilaunhombre 12th-Jul-2012 12:13 am (UTC)
oh my god that is so sad, i never realized really how sad it is for suri to have all of that around her.

and people wonder why katie carries her??? i have a 5 year old brother and he would be terrified. i'd probably have to carry him too.
gimmeachipwich 12th-Jul-2012 05:14 pm (UTC)
god i would be traumatized if i were her. poor bb
kishmet 12th-Jul-2012 12:28 am (UTC)
Sniffling a little and looking unhappy = tantrum? ok lol
doverz 12th-Jul-2012 12:30 am (UTC)
Because she's 6 years old and constantly surrounded by paparazzi. Seems like it'd be pretty traumatizing.
extrahotlatte 12th-Jul-2012 01:36 am (UTC)
what the hell is this comment
thetxbelle 11th-Jul-2012 10:55 pm (UTC)
IMO a name change at 6 is basically saying I'm changing something about you because I never liked it/no longer like it/no longer want you to identify with part of who you are or be that person.

Doesn't seem like a great idea imo, call the kid by a nickname if they like it, if not let them choose what they want to be called.
mistyraven 11th-Jul-2012 10:56 pm (UTC)
If Suri already calls her Scout and it's a name she answers to, eh, not that big a deal.

Also, obligatory joke about the paparazzi feeling at home in the zoo
executed_blonde 11th-Jul-2012 10:56 pm (UTC)
wants to change her name from 'Suri Cruise' to 'Scout Holmes'

lol ok
so_chic_doll 11th-Jul-2012 10:56 pm (UTC)
where did Scout come from?

man, i wanna go to the zoo real bad.
madbeevip 11th-Jul-2012 11:02 pm (UTC)
She hates the name Suri, so she gave her a nickname from To Kill A Mockingbird

It's the name of a character in the book.
so_chic_doll 11th-Jul-2012 11:04 pm (UTC)
lol yeah i went back and read the article. i thought maybe the scout thing was news i missed from earlier or something.
klutzy_girl 11th-Jul-2012 11:03 pm (UTC)
The article says from "To Kill A Mockingbird"
im_chris_hansen 11th-Jul-2012 11:21 pm (UTC)
it's her favorite truck model by the International motor company
