Def Jam: Early release of Frank Ocean's 'Channel Orange' part of original marketing plan

Odd Future fans who had July 17 marked on their calendars got a pleasant surprise late last night.

Not only did sudden headline-maker Frank Ocean make his television debut on Late Night With Jimmy Fallon, but there was also a surprise announcement: the hotly anticipated Channel Orange would be streaming online for the next 24 hours on Ocean’s Tumblr, as well as for sale on iTunes. The album, which fans thought wouldn’t be available until next Tuesday, became the No. 1 album on iTunes within the hour.

And according to Def Jam, that was all part of Channel Orange‘s unusual marketing strategy.

It all began in June, when Ocean mysteriously announced via teaser trailer that the album would be coming out by July. That left a relatively short period of time for promotion, but Team Ocean made the most of it. Just within the past week, the buzz spiked when Ocean opened up about his sexuality mere days before his cover profile in last Sunday’s New York TimesArts & Leisure section.

When asked Sunday night whether Ocean’s semi-coming out affected the album’s marketing plan, Def Jam president Joie Manda told EW in an e-mail, ”Absolutely not. You have to understand that Frank’s letter last week was in NO WAY intended to impact the marketing of this record. Like all things with Frank, it was a carefully measured, very personal decision.”

Manda said then that the label’s “plans remain the same: to support Frank Ocean’s creativity and artistry and allow him the freedom to continue building the very special relationship he’s cultivated with his fans.”

Which would mean that last night’s “surprise” early release wasn’t really a surprise at all. A Def Jam rep confirmed this to EW this morning, telling us that the early release, NYT story, and Fallon announcement were always a part of their plan.

“Frank’s appearance on the show was on the books for almost two months, well before his letter last week,” Late Night booker Jonathan Cohen confirms to us in an e-mail. “The announcement of the early digital release was part of the plan from the very beginning.”

tired of some people going all,"it's very suspicious that the fallon performance happened and he suddenly dropped his album early after he released that letter hmmm"  (i mean god how cynical can you be??) so i hope people shut the fuck up about  that already because it's clearly not true (and even if it was who cares??). i mean sure it got his name out there for people who previously never heard of him before but that's pretty much it. either way he put out a fantastic album and i'm just happy i didn't have to wait another week to hear it.

lol right?? capitalize on that shit. i actually thought they just decided to drop it because he was getting so much publicity. either way it worked.
bibbysbaby 11th-Jul-2012 07:21 pm (UTC)
I'm not mad at them for smart pr. his star is hot right now. people are talking, why not release it a week early. and it's only a week! hustle hard Frank!
yeahwell_britt 11th-Jul-2012 08:10 pm (UTC)

Being a member of a minority group, especially LGBT generally hurts artists commercially. This, as it appears now, has helped him and I ain't even mad.

Idk I think his letter was absolutely a conscious marketing decision but it's his sexuality and he can use it to further his career if he wants to.
oceanhue 11th-Jul-2012 07:21 pm (UTC)
For some odd reason, a lot of people are "angry" that he came out before releasing the album trying to say he did it to get more sales. Which I absolutely disagree with. If anything, it would have had a negative effect. Especially since the Black community is extremely homophobic

As I am aware of. But in the African-American community it is less accepting.

I would argue not in 2012, it doesn't hurt him at all. Plus you gotta think Frank's audience is not just the black community

great album either way and it came out early 8)
ohkimosabe 11th-Jul-2012 07:22 pm (UTC)
i love how ppl think the only reason he wrote the letter was for publicity. right it has nothing to do with the fact he was about to release an album where he sings to a boy and wanted to clear things up beforehand or anything.
bibbysbaby 11th-Jul-2012 07:22 pm (UTC)
truth. you speak it.
weruintooeasy 11th-Jul-2012 07:25 pm (UTC)
yeah people seem to forgetting the part where a blogger who went to a listening party pointed it out on their blog that he was using male pronouns so he released the liner notes from his album to clear things up. he was going to come out either way. he just did it a little bit earlier than he probably expected he would.
bluesforgotten 11th-Jul-2012 07:28 pm (UTC)
yeah this is what i think happened. he probably knew he would have to respond to questions about the lyrics and just did so when he felt he needed to.
sweetwaterpink 11th-Jul-2012 07:25 pm (UTC)
haters will hate. some people are conspiracy theorist about anything and everything. my mom's that way and it kills me.
backincharge 11th-Jul-2012 07:25 pm (UTC)
That and the fact there's no way he could have known whether or not him coming out would help him or harm him.
mandramoddle 11th-Jul-2012 07:36 pm (UTC)
Your icon, lol. Reminds me of that episode of the Fresh Prince where Uncle Phil and Will picture Jazz's sister as Jazz in drag.
mydogfred 11th-Jul-2012 07:38 pm (UTC)
lol right???
prophecypro 11th-Jul-2012 07:49 pm (UTC)
I think he did but I dont have a problem with it. Of course you would want to create publicity and give a perspective to an issue like that. It was smart more than anything.
peacetrains 11th-Jul-2012 07:57 pm (UTC)
MTE. You know people would have just speculated over those lyrics.
jigglemypuff 11th-Jul-2012 07:22 pm (UTC)
Everything is a conspiracy! Xenu is behind it!
sweetwaterpink 11th-Jul-2012 07:22 pm (UTC)
I believe I read it on Frank's tumblr that he wanted to surprise the fans. I thought the early release was the surprise. Fuck the negativity. Channel Orange is too beautiful for me to worry about that ish.
pelo_suelto 11th-Jul-2012 07:25 pm (UTC)
lots of hype surrounding this guy for no reason jesus christ

he is a young black man brave enough to talk about his sexual fluidity. He was "known" enough for this to have killed his career and from what people assume about "black media" it should have. He's gotten extremely positive supports from his peers, has handled it with grace and inspired others (to my surprise tbh). The album is really good too. There is obviously reason, you may not like it but that's on you.

I need a link to this album asap.
bakemonos 11th-Jul-2012 07:36 pm (UTC)
You know exactly what I meant. Don't be throwing that link up in here.
bluesforgotten 11th-Jul-2012 07:26 pm (UTC)
I think that the letter was in response to the rumors that were already there. I think the rumors themselves were creating hype for the album anyway and then he chose to respond.
kofo4 11th-Jul-2012 07:27 pm (UTC)
the people who attack him for this of all things make no sense imo. just stupid
fluorescentx 11th-Jul-2012 07:27 pm (UTC)
I imagine the letter was only because he wanted to clear everything up before the album dropped. it's a flawfree album so I'd hope it would've gotten just as much publicity if it was released when it was meant to be.
childish 11th-Jul-2012 07:28 pm (UTC)
Why can't you use personal parts of yourself to sell a personal album though? Like, I don't have an issue with him even if IT was planned. Why not capitalize on your own personal growth?
bluesforgotten 11th-Jul-2012 07:35 pm (UTC)
