Sad Day at Comic Con

Oh no! Just when things were starting to settle in for Twilight fans at Comic-Con, a woman was reportedly injured when she was struck by a car outside of the San Diego Comic-Con convention center.

According to one attendant's tweet, "If you pray pls do so now for Twi fan G! She was just hit by a car in front of the convention center! She was unconscious when taken hosp."

Vale from Twilight Poison, who was nearby the incident, has informed me that the fan in question was crossing the street next to Hall H when she was struck by a vehicle. "From the moment she was hit to when the ambulance arrived and took her, she was completely unconscious. I don't know if it's super serious but it might be if she was knocked off her feet and left unconscious! ... Everybody is pretty shaken up about it," she explained.

Let's hope her injuries are not serious, poor thing!

UPDATE: Sadly, it has now been reported that "G" now been pronounced dead as a result of the incident, due a head injury. According to her friend who reported the accident on Twitter, "Im sorry to tell everyone G passed away." What a sad day for us all.

UPDATE 3: I've now learned that the victim's name was Gisella G. and that her Twitter handle was @Mad4Hugh. A photo of her with friends camping for the event can be seen here (the woman in the green shirt). The area is now being blocked off by police, as can be seen in this picture. She was reportedly 53 years old, and the driver was a 67-year-old male.

SAN DIEGO — A portion of Harbor Drive in downtown San Diego was closed Tuesday morning while police investigated a fatal crash in which a female pedestrian was struck by a car.

Police closed westbound Harbor from Fifth to Eighth avenues, said police Lt. Andra Brown. Northbound Fifth at Harbor also was closed.

The 53-year-old woman, who was in San Diego for Comic-Con at the nearby San Diego Convention Center, was struck at Fifth and Harbor, Brown said.

Police said she was in a crosswalk and tried to run across Harbor about 9:20 a.m. She tried to stop when she saw an oncoming Subaru but ended up tripping into the car, Brown said.

An ambulance took the unconscious woman, who was bleeding profusely from her head, to a hospital where she died, Brown said.

The 67-year-old male driver stopped and was being interviewed by officers.

That's just really sad to hear about. Especially at an event like this.

I thought it would be too, but the big comic con fans I follow on twitter were posting links about it, so I figured it must be true.
twowaymirrrors 10th-Jul-2012 06:41 pm (UTC)
I don't think it started yet. Everything says it goes from the 12th to the 15th.
honey_child 10th-Jul-2012 06:53 pm (UTC)

cruel_fortuna 10th-Jul-2012 06:33 pm (UTC)
Everyone tweets about it but I bet not one of those mother fuckers got up to physically check on her.

Ugh.
Still, a human life is a human life - so I'm sorry they died.
night_sky99 10th-Jul-2012 06:40 pm (UTC)
My sister found some guy collapsed and bloodied at the bottom of a subway entrance. A dozen people walked by without even checking to see if he was alive.

Humans disgusts me so much sometimes.
cruel_fortuna 10th-Jul-2012 06:44 pm (UTC)
I used to think that all humans had empathy, sad to say that after I grew up & entered the 'real world' - I found that wasn't the case at all.

In regards to what you wrote though : Did she ever find out if he was okay/alive or ... is it still a mystery to this day?
gustheduckie 10th-Jul-2012 07:38 pm (UTC)
omg, I had a bike accident a few years ago at a big intersection and like 10 people called 911. the idea that people would ignore something like that is so bizarre to me.
tigermilk 10th-Jul-2012 08:20 pm (UTC)
Ugh. I definitely would have called 911. I called 911 because there was a man walking erratically along the side of a very busy part of the highway last year. Not here for someone jumping out into traffic.
harrypotterlvr3 10th-Jul-2012 06:45 pm (UTC)
bystander effect at its best
sastra_fuss 10th-Jul-2012 06:49 pm (UTC)
I doubt there were any doctors or nurses in the crowd. Best just to wait until the ambulance gets there.
_tasty 10th-Jul-2012 06:56 pm (UTC)
One night after leaving a bar I woke up on the sidewalk covered in blood. It was maybe midnight and it was a pretty busy area in my city and I was only 4 blocks from home and 2 from the bar. No one had helped me and people had just walked by. I barely remember stumbling home and having my roommates call the cops.

Regardless of the details of what happened to me, I know that there were tons of people who are out around that time where I was knocked unconscious and it wasn't on a side street or anything. People even watched me stumble home.
swim_thedepths 10th-Jul-2012 07:13 pm (UTC)
Probably afraid of lawsuits, tbh.
livefreexo 10th-Jul-2012 07:20 pm (UTC)
nope. i recently had a brain bleed from falling on a sidewalk trying to catch a bus that was coming and the bus driver didn't even stop to see if i was ok, i was knocked out cold right by the bus stop.

so sad that someone died :(
americnxidiot 10th-Jul-2012 07:22 pm (UTC)
The driver stopped and stayed on the scene. And it happened in front of Hall H, so I'm sure medics were called immediately.
phight 10th-Jul-2012 08:13 pm (UTC)
My brother found a dead guy in Detroit near the Tigers stadium a couple months ago, and people were just walking right by him :( He let a policeman know and the guy was just like "......yeah ok" and didn't seem to be that worried about it. My brother was especially appalled cuz the guy was CLEARLY dead and it looked like someone had even robbed his body (he said his pants were kind of down like someone had been rooting through the pockets). People suck. :/
dannysstargirl 11th-Jul-2012 04:07 am (UTC)
Not that this is an excuse, but this just makes me think of the bystander effect:

RIP but what does Twilight have to do with Comics?
shelostcontro1 10th-Jul-2012 06:37 pm (UTC)
what does half the shit there have to do with comics?
poop_of_death 10th-Jul-2012 06:37 pm (UTC)
saddens me tbh
lack_ofcolour 10th-Jul-2012 06:37 pm (UTC)
Comic Con has become much more of a general media event over the last 5 years or so. Very little of the main events for the con have to do with comics.
succubuzz 10th-Jul-2012 06:37 pm (UTC)
Comic Con has very little to do with comics anymore, really. It's used to promote tv and upcoming movies!
sandstorm 10th-Jul-2012 06:38 pm (UTC)
I think there are crime shows with booths at the Con this year...but I'm almost certain it's not totally about cartoons, even though there's a lot of them.
yurasama_love 10th-Jul-2012 06:38 pm (UTC)
SDCC is a huge media circus and Twilight (for whatever reason) has a panel at Comic-Con. The fury of 100,000 nerds and geeks in 2009 was hilarious.
cruel_fortuna 10th-Jul-2012 06:39 pm (UTC)
Over the years Comic-Con has become a multi-media event.
All the big name studios bring the public their first glimpse at Comic-Con; usually.

It's still about comics but it's really an all encompassing event.
Generally one form of media will be the cornerstone for each year.
For example: 2008 it was Batman because of all the press surrounding/clamoring for news in regards to The Dark Knight.

This year it's movies but with more fan interest television shows like 'The Walking Dead' or 'Eureka'.
theratwhispers 10th-Jul-2012 06:39 pm (UTC)
Not a thing. Most Twilight fans KNOW NOTHING about anything else at the convention.
bellwetherr 10th-Jul-2012 06:40 pm (UTC)
Comic Con has all sorts of shit going on there. Genre shows, films and books are always there.
sandvich 10th-Jul-2012 06:40 pm (UTC)
Comic Con is more for general fandom and nerd stuff than comics specifically. There are always panels and stuff for movies, books, video games, etc.
onyxobsidian 10th-Jul-2012 07:42 pm (UTC)
They have people like the cast of Arrested Development at shit like this.
ametalheart 10th-Jul-2012 06:34 pm (UTC)
How sad. :(
lack_ofcolour 10th-Jul-2012 06:36 pm (UTC)
Damn, Comic Con doesn't even start until tomorrow night... Not that that's the point, but what a way to put a damper on the thing before it even begins:/

RIP.
simprov 10th-Jul-2012 06:36 pm (UTC)
that's so sad :(
especially because you know she was looking forward to this, probably for awhile
moonsenorita 10th-Jul-2012 06:36 pm (UTC)
I guess because this is ONTD and I missed that death tag, that I thought this was going to have a happy ending with her being alright in the hospital and joking about she'd get to to go the front of the line or something.

RIP :(
