Did church audition women to marry Tom Cruise??

A former Scientologist tells Dateline's Josh Mankiewicz about the inner workings of the church, including how he says he was on a team tasked to find the perfect wife for Tom Cruise.

that ~creature is one of the greatest musicians of all time. your little 1D may be cute and what not but all of them combined will never come close to having as much talent as bowie does in one of his eyelashes.

His antics really diminish his physical allure to me. Also, I wouldn't be able to not think of that supposed “You want some ice cream, in case there are no gay people there?” quote from him. And, I bet he is terrible in the sack.

Yes, I would make a great beard.

nope that's 5 years of my life that would be wasted..life is too short bb
massielita 8th-Jul-2012 09:17 pm (UTC)
No. But I grew up in a fundie cult so I don't think any amount of money in the world would make me go back to any similar environment.

*checks student loan balance*

vivisexion 8th-Jul-2012 09:18 pm (UTC)
yes, but i wouldn't have kids and i'd always be too "busy" to do anything with scientology
silly_hippie 8th-Jul-2012 09:18 pm (UTC)
I wouldn't marry Tom because Scientology scares the shit out of me; however, I would beard for any semi-normal male celeb. Looking at you, Jake Gyllenhaal.
jonesingjay 8th-Jul-2012 09:18 pm (UTC)
i'd be his husband.
pastelstar 8th-Jul-2012 09:18 pm (UTC)

spankmypirate 8th-Jul-2012 09:20 pm (UTC)
No, he needs several psychiatrists, not a spouse.

I think his sex life would somewhat resemble Ralphie's from the Sopranos... all those shame/guilt issues...

No. I love my freedom.

Nope he genuinely scares me, and has for a long time. I don't trust anything about this man.
loveissuicide87 8th-Jul-2012 09:32 pm (UTC)
No, and that is because he's a Scientology. I wouldn't be about to tolerate the beliefs that would be pushed on me and the divorce wouldn't be a clean break. If he wasn't a Scientology and no children were involved in the contract, I honestly would though.
tx5mym5 8th-Jul-2012 09:34 pm (UTC)
Sure. I ain't doing shit, and I have student loans. Five years is easy, if I don't have to convert to Scientology.
superhetoric 8th-Jul-2012 09:35 pm (UTC)
fuck yes. it would be soooo fun to make shit up for my scientology audit sessions. i'd stay married to the dude, we could share rentboys and bond over our mutual love of turtlenecks.
actxappalledx 8th-Jul-2012 09:37 pm (UTC)
yea but no thank u on having his children
deadendqueen16 8th-Jul-2012 09:39 pm (UTC)
I honestly don't think I could deal with all the Scientology craziness. It scares the shit out of me.

Yes. Hell I'd help with his harem of men.
megalixer 8th-Jul-2012 09:46 pm (UTC)
scientology is the only reason why I wouldn't. and even then, it's only because of the stuff about the stalking, disappeared people, sea org, et. al. - wouldn't care if it was loony but harmless.
sorryeden 8th-Jul-2012 10:00 pm (UTC)
Nope he annoys me
sparkfactory 8th-Jul-2012 10:06 pm (UTC)
if it would put me on scientology's watch list no fucking way tbh

no sex, no kids, I get to fuq whoever I want on the side, and we're good

Oh Lawwdd. Too bad I can't watch the special tonight because I'm working :(
bluesforgotten 8th-Jul-2012 09:14 pm (UTC)
I just don't understand how anyone can question whether or not this was a contract marriage - clearly, Tom picked from a group of young female actresses one who would buy into the pact.
goldengirl66 8th-Jul-2012 10:02 pm (UTC)
He may have been auditioning and looking for a wife but i think anyone who thinks Katie signed a contract to marry him is dumb
pennyroyaltea 8th-Jul-2012 09:14 pm (UTC)
i don't understand why people are still hung up on this theory. i truly believe that she met and fell in love with him, and was probably blind to all of his crazy antics in the beginning.
nicenicegirl 8th-Jul-2012 09:18 pm (UTC)
didn't Scarlett Johansson admit that he "auditioned" her tho?? i thought there was some sort of evidence that he was doing some shady shit before he finally got with Katie.
pennyroyaltea 8th-Jul-2012 09:19 pm (UTC)
i don't know about any of that tbh. i know tom is crazy but this idea just seems so far fetched. why would katie agree to this? she doesn't need the money. and why go so far as to have a child with him? in my mind it doesn't make any sense.
bluesforgotten 8th-Jul-2012 09:19 pm (UTC)
I think it's both, though. Like, he went after her (and a few other women prior to meeting her who didn't work out) for a reason, and she was truly interested for a reason. He's a charismatic guy and he has a reputation as a nice person to those he meets. But I think even if her interest was genuine, doesn't mean his was.
my_cat_is_grey 8th-Jul-2012 09:19 pm (UTC)
lol at this and the comment above it.
abbiemills 8th-Jul-2012 09:30 pm (UTC)
Jessica Alba's hinted at it in the past and Scarlett pretty much laid it out that he did.

Katie is probably a different story, though. Her childhood crush wooing and wining and dining her? I'd get blinded by it too and think it couldn't be as bad as people said.
hoot 8th-Jul-2012 09:44 pm (UTC)
ia. I think this "contract" is more like a hardcore prenup. With all the media surrounding them it would have made them look REALLY bad if they divorced after 6 months, so I think this was to prevent that.
megalixer 8th-Jul-2012 09:57 pm (UTC)
I think it's a mix of both, tbh. You'll never convince me that it was for anything other than convenience/staying in the closet on his part, but I can believe that she got swept off her feet by her childhood crush and at least initially thought that maybe she could make him feel the same way even if the circumstances around it were business-like.
goldengirl66 8th-Jul-2012 10:05 pm (UTC)
i agree, it was genuine on Katie's side. I think she was lovestruck and Tom etc probably sold Scientology like this amazing thing and she didn't see the bad side of it
iamtheliquorr 8th-Jul-2012 11:55 pm (UTC)
I can't speak for all of ontd, but to me it's just fun to speculate and Tom Cruise is so crazy it's almost plausible

Sofia Vergara and ScarJo had a lucky escape....
saray677 8th-Jul-2012 09:22 pm (UTC)
I feel like Sofia really escaped in the last minute it sounds like he had big plans for her (probably what he did with Katie in the end)
voltaires_vice 8th-Jul-2012 09:24 pm (UTC)
How creepy that you can just watch a tv show, see an actress you like the look of and tell your minions, "Her. Get her." Everything about this gives me the hoogly googlies.
bluesforgotten 8th-Jul-2012 09:30 pm (UTC)
I think Sofia already having a child probably pushed her away.
artemisbones94 9th-Jul-2012 05:22 am (UTC)
Holy crap. I heard about Scarlett, but Sofia?
hedgerowbustle 8th-Jul-2012 10:13 pm (UTC)
What's the story with him and Sofia Vergara? I'm not familiar with that.
