India’s track and field star Pinki Pramanik embroiled in gender controversy

india
Track and field star Pinki Pramanik burst onto the world stage as a symbol of India’s coming-of-age, emerging from a life of poverty in a backwater village to win gold at the Asian and Commonwealth Games.

Now, Pramanik is a symbol of her country’s ham-fisted policing and justice system. After a woman claiming to be her live-in partner accused her of being a man masquerading for years as a woman, police arrested Pramanik and leaked a video of her taking a so-called nude test to determine her gender.

The video, which has gone viral, is graphic by Indian standards and has roiled the tradition-bound society. Its release has stoked a storm of criticism from human-rights advocates and prompted Kolkata’s high court to order an investigation into police treatment of the Indian sports star.

Pramanik, 26, was arrested by police in Kolkata two weeks ago and charged with impersonation, rape, and physical assault. Police filed a subsequent charge of intimidation after the retired sprinter initially refused to be subjected to a medical exam.

The case has sent shockwaves through India’s athletics community. Pramanik had anchored the Indian women’s 400-metre relay team to a gold medal in the 2006 Asian Games in Doha and silver in the Commonwealth Games in Sydney the same year.

Two days after laying charges against her, police held a press conference to discuss the results of her medical exam. At the same time, a 29-second video clip of the former runner lying naked on a bed was leaked after Pramanik agreed to a gender verification test at a private nursing home in West Bengal.

As authorities wait for the results of her test and deal with the public-relations disaster following the video’s release, Pramanik remains in custody and is the country’s most discussed sports celebrity, even as other Indian athletes prepare to compete at the London Summer Olympics in a few weeks.

"Initial private tests claimed to show her to be male. Pramanik disagreed with these results and police ordered a separate government-led test as part of the trial. The results at the SSKM Government Hospital were inconclusive. The Court then directed a chromosome pattern test."

Or so says Wiki. No result from the chromosome test yet.

She seems to identify as a woman, so she/female pronouns.
bluesforgotten 8th-Jul-2012 04:42 pm (UTC)
While I completely agree with your point, I think the interest in her "true" or biological gender is based also on the legalities of sporting competitions.
getbacknow 8th-Jul-2012 06:33 pm (UTC)
...this about athletic competition so they require more than that to go on
fuk_q 8th-Jul-2012 09:00 pm (UTC)

fakevoices 8th-Jul-2012 02:19 pm (UTC)

pikapika217 8th-Jul-2012 02:20 pm (UTC)
This is so disgusting and sadly not the first time this has happened to a femal athelete that just wasn't 'feminine enough'. Poor girls

I have no idea what I just read
rubyboots 8th-Jul-2012 02:22 pm (UTC)
why was she charged with rape? o.O
banabee 8th-Jul-2012 02:23 pm (UTC)
all of those charges sound ridiculous. Intimidation cause she refused to take the exam? smh
rubyboots 8th-Jul-2012 02:28 pm (UTC)
Oh wait Google tells me that the woman who is claiming Pinki is a man is also saying she raped her. But the way this article is written, I thought she was arrested just for claiming to be a woman and they added a rape charge on there for no apparent reason!
ladyfly56 8th-Jul-2012 02:22 pm (UTC)
jesus christ

roguedandelion 8th-Jul-2012 02:41 pm (UTC)
I feel so bad with for those athletes that don't know their chromosomal make and then get blasted on the eve of the olympics. So awful.
lulu_quality 8th-Jul-2012 02:45 pm (UTC)
Absolutely horrifying.

Does anyone know the name of the athlete that was previously accused of this? I think it involved having male characteristics as the result of high testosterone levels or something?
jinx24 8th-Jul-2012 02:46 pm (UTC)
Caster Semenya?
volare 8th-Jul-2012 04:10 pm (UTC)
Caster Semenya; she was found to be intersexed, with female external genitalia but an undescended testicle in her abdomen which I believe she had surgery to remove as it would have been a huge cancer risk to leave it.
wildfawn 8th-Jul-2012 05:25 pm (UTC)
wow, i didn't even KNOW that could happen.
cickiz 8th-Jul-2012 05:55 pm (UTC)
that's shit she probably wanted to keep private. smh.
whataboutdasha 8th-Jul-2012 07:09 pm (UTC)
I fucking hated when she had to appear in a magazine all dolled up in a dress just to prove she was a woman and ~feminine. People treated her appallingly.
jinx24 8th-Jul-2012 02:45 pm (UTC)
god forbid a woman is actually good at something and doesn't have society's view of how a feminine body should be
ixmissxyouxx 8th-Jul-2012 02:53 pm (UTC)
Who the hell would release a video like that?! I'm sure it was such a humiliating moment for her and now it's viral?! Wrong on more levels than one.

People must be jealous of her beauty, which is so high school, but honestly, I just wanted to work in a way to say: Male or Female, however she wishes to be addressed, she's still bloody gorgeous.
poetic_pixie_13 8th-Jul-2012 02:54 pm (UTC)
I should preemptively get out of this post. (But I probably won't.)

Chromosomes, genitalia, hormones, body types and shapes etc don't determine gender. Gender isn't determined by an arbitrary cultural or social idea of what men and women look like, act like, think like, feel like, are like. A 'real' woman is someone who identifies as a woman. A 'real' man is someone who identifies as a man. Then there are those who identify as both or neither or take a third, fourth, fifth option. Cause gender isn't a binary. People assume gender is a strict progression of male to female. But actually, from a non-binary, non-judgmental viewpoint, it’s more like a big ball of wibbly-wobbly, gendery-bendery... stuff

Haha I remember seeing this on tumblr, and I always appreciate a good DW reference.
chikntetrazzini 8th-Jul-2012 04:31 pm (UTC)
I agree in principal, but not totally in the context of sex-specific athletic competitions. Its one thing if a person who is chromosomally male but has female fenitalia and has always lived as a woman competes, but a mtf transsexual may have an advantage based on her birth sex.

I don't agree with this.
feverously 8th-Jul-2012 05:08 pm (UTC)
I would argue that gender IS cultural or soial idea of what men and women look like, act like think like, etc- as by definition gender concepts of norms, ideals, etc. are reinforced and defined by society. Society has it programmed in us that gender, race, sexuality, etc. can/should be divided and regulated to binary norms that leave no room for self-determination. I think the division, distinction, and definition of both sex and gender (particularly in today's society) is finally being addressed, but not progressing as rapidly as some would hope.
getbacknow 8th-Jul-2012 06:45 pm (UTC)
what does this have to do with this post though? are you saying that it's fair for someone who identifies as a woman to compete against other women regardless of their genetic makeup?
