Stars Who Left Scientology

If Katie Holmes officially opts to leave the Church of Scientology -- whose current members include Tom Cruise, John Travolta, Kirstie Alley and Jenna Elfman -- after divorcing Tom Cruise, she won't be alone.

Other A-listers who have decided to leave behind the talked-about religion include Cruise's ex-wife Nicole Kidman, comedian Jerry Seinfeld, actor Jason Beghe and film director Paul Haggis.

Kidman, 45, left Scientology after her divorce from Cruise in August 2001. Karen De La Carriere, ex-wife of former Scientology president Heber Jentzsch, claimed to The Hollywood Reporter that members of the church deliberately turned Kidman and Cruise's children, Bella, 19, and Connor, 17, against their mom after their parents split.

"You're either in or out when it comes to Scientology," another expert told THR. "That's why Katie is making custody such an issue in the divorce petition. If you're out, the way she seems to be, they want to cut you off from everyone, including your kids."

G.I. Jane actor Jason Beghe famously left the church in 2007 -- after 13 years. He released a video rant in 2008 speaking out against the group. "Scientology is destructive and a rip-off," the 52-year-old actor said. "It's very, very dangerous for your spiritual, psychological, mental, emotional health and evolution. I think it stunts your evolution. If Scientology is real, then something's f---ed up."

Jerry Seinfeld admitted in 2007 that he studied Scientology for a brief time. "I did some Scientology courses about 30 years ago," Seinfeld, 58, told Access Hollywood. "The only thing that bothers me about people knowing that is that it is not my complete wacko resume. It's just one aspect!"

"I didn't do very much. I don't know that much. I just did a little but I liked it," he said.

Why did he stop? "I don't know . . . I was kind of flitting from thing to thing. I was interested in exploring."

Film director and screenwriter Paul Haggis left Scientology in October 2009 after being an active member for 34 years. He wrote a resignation letter to the church after the San Diego branch made statements supporting Proposition 8.

"I was in a cult for thirty-four years," Haggis, 59, said via a story written in The New Yorker in February 2011 detailing his allegations. "Everyone else could see it. I don't know why I couldn't."

Actress Diana Canova, best known for her role on the 1970s sitcom Soap, told Premire magazine in 1993 she had a hard time leaving the religion. "It took me years before I decided to quit," Canova, 59, said. "I guess finally I was so fed up with being afraid. You've heard all these horror stories . . . I believed them."

As for Holmes, she was raised as a Catholic but converted to Scientology after getting together with Cruise, 50, in 2005. Sources tell Us Weekly the 33-year-old actress and Cruise "fought viciously" over how to raise their six-year-old daughter, Suri. At one point, Holmes had been attending Scientology classes three times a week, but stopped going a year and a half ago.

Wikipedia's list of famous Scientologists can be read here.

What I find both sad and scary about this is that after commenting on all this Scientology disconnection, Karen De La Carriere's son mysteriously died.

has she ever been involved? i was looking at a list of celebs in it & they're all the celebs she's the most chummy with, so i'm kind of shocked she's never joined
loveissuicide87 6th-Jul-2012 10:40 pm (UTC)
I'm pretty sure they've tired to persuade her into joining. Of course they would attempt, with her finances and power. I'm pretty sure they try to get many celebrities and rich people to join.
mhfromnh 7th-Jul-2012 01:18 am (UTC)
they most certainly seek out celebrity converts, and most likely encourage non-celebrity members to chase fame, in an effort to look better in the public eye.

It has been so long in between posts. I thought for a while they got to us esp for that brief moment that ONTD went down
tigirah 6th-Jul-2012 10:18 pm (UTC)
what's the deal with lisa marie presley, has it actually been confirmed that she left? or are people just inferring it from her lyrics?
latexana 6th-Jul-2012 10:21 pm (UTC)
I think thats a pretty good inference. is not like she was being subtle.
tigirah 6th-Jul-2012 10:23 pm (UTC)
I haven't personally read or heard the songs myself, just asking...
shangri__la 6th-Jul-2012 10:29 pm (UTC)
She's been pretty clear with her lyrics and refusing to talk about the CoS. She also follows Anderson Cooper on twitter, who did a scathing report on Scientology a year ago or something.
leitao 7th-Jul-2012 12:40 am (UTC)
No one's 100% on her, but in '09, after she posted a couple blogs about MJ's death on her MySpace account . . . all of the Scientology stuff on her profile page was deleted. Quite a few ex-Scientologists talked online about her leaving the church in '09, as well.

Then there's her recent lyrics, in which she uses some Scientology buzz words and talks about churches misleading people, etc. ("Unethical, not what I thought" and "I'm a bit transgressive and suppressive as well / You ain't seen nothin' yet").

So while it seems likely, it's really anyone's guess. *shrug*
gimmeachipwich 7th-Jul-2012 04:09 am (UTC)
WHAT?? she was a scientologist. noo that breaks my little middle school heart back in the day
jasmina12345 6th-Jul-2012 10:18 pm (UTC)
it just baffles me that people genuinely are part of this "religion" and believe the shit being said

like normal everyday ppl tho. because a celeb getting involved in this doesn't surprise me at all considering that the COS are all about money, power and status climbing.

I don't know why you're asking for a cut. It's not even that long.
shesasuperhero 7th-Jul-2012 03:30 am (UTC)
I apologize. I wasn't saying it needed a cut text, I was simply admiring the cut text in the post. I think it should be the cut text of every post from now on TBQH
