Two dedicated and determined fans of British actor Tom Hiddleston have launched an all-out campaign to get him into the 2012 Sexiest Man Alive contest run by People magazine.

It’s true that Hiddleston is tall, and handsome, with blue eyes that send his fans swooning, (and swooning is a word that they use a lot, along with melting and other falling-apart type words. And if you don’t think  he’s handsome you need to look at more photos, or videos, that’s all I have to say.) tbqh it's better than the in motion argument.

Hiddleston’s hair is naturally blond and curly, though he wore it long, dark and straight when he played Loki, the Norse God of Mischief in the movies Thor and The Avengers.  Some fans have got a double crush going on at the same time for the actor and the character.  The role of Loki increased Hiddleston’s worldwide profile considerably, though he was also in Deep Blue Sea, War Horse, Midnight in Paris, Archipelago, Unrelated and some TV shows, too.

But Michelle Panfile and Michelle Higgens, from suburban Philadelphia, have many more reasons beyond the obvious external ones.

Michelle Panfile wrote the preamble to their online petition. I’m going to quote extensively from it because I think it’s really well-written and heart-felt.

“Tom Hiddleston is an actor who personifies sexy and we want People Magazine to know it.

“Sexy by definition is handsome, physically appealing and exciting. But sexy is so much more than that. It’s the way a person moves, the way they speak, what they stand for, what they do and how they live. It’s a fierce intelligence that amazes you with its insight. It’s a sense of humor that creates laughter as easily as it relishes it. It’s a joyful laugh and a perfect smile. It’s a friendly, pleasant demeanour and a welcoming personality. It is a man who speaks several languages, works tirelessly for his craft and likes to dance. 

“It’s a man who loves his family, friends and fans and takes pride in his work. It’s a man whose voice is so deeply melodious that it could melt a woman’s heart with a single word. It is generosity, kindness, magnetism and attractiveness encompassed in a witty, charming, alluring, radiantly spectacular person. In other words, it is Tom Hiddleston, who is all of these things. 

“People Magazine also considers an actor’s current level of popularity and relevancy when choosing their pick for the annual cover and title. We believe that Tom Hiddleston nails these criteria as well. Tom Hiddleston’s Internet presence and fan base have skyrocketed in just the last few months to unprecedented levels. He is extremely popular and relevant with the public, his peers, critics, and the world’s best directors. Two of his 2011 movies were concurrently nominated for the Best Picture Academy Award (War Horse, a Steven Spielberg film and Midnight in Paris, a Woody Allen film) and his latest, The Avengers, is the third top grossing movie of all time. 

“We would like to see Tom Hiddleston be rewarded for his hard work as well as for his rising popularity by having him grace the cover of People Magazine as the Sexiest Man Alive.

“Help us by signing the petition to People Magazine. We want people to hear Loki’s Army and the Hiddlestoners as we unite together for this mission to see Tom Hiddleston crowned rightfully as the Sexiest Man Alive.”

Based on my own research, it seems Hiddleston is not at all full of himself despite his talent and popularity, that many people find him inspirational because he’s optimistic, hard working, enjoys his work immensely, can quote  Shakespeare at length, never says anything bad about anybody, is totally hilarious and does great impressions.

(Oh, in my originalpost I forgot to point out that he also has a degree in Classics from Cambridge – a double-first as they say over there– one more reason why he’s not just another pretty face.)

He has the maturity of an adult combined with the wide-eyed wonder of a child.  Many fans say that they are very happy just to know that he even exists!!!

In an e-mail to me, The Two Michelles explained that they started their petition because they admired Hiddleston but also to shake things up, because “it seems every year People pulls from the same list of names. How many times is Johnny Depp, George Clooney or Brad Pitt going to win? There was some outcry last year about People overlooking Ryan Gosling and we just wanted Mr. Hiddleston to be in the running this time.”

They also pointed out that their petition has received support from fans all over the world, with people from “almost every state in the United States, Canada, Portugal, New Zealand, Russia, Ukraine, Australia, Mexico, Ecuador, Philippines, Argentina, Denmark, Wales, UK, Poland, France, Puerto Rico, Sweden, Czech Republic, Italy, Indonesia, Thailand, Brazil, Germany, Chile, Serbia, Colombia, Romania, Honduras, South Korea, Venezuela, South Africa, Spain, Singapore, Bolivia, Greece, Austria, Finland, Norway, Hong Kong, Peru, Vietnam, Malaysia, Panama, Guatemala, Taiwan, Uruguay, Dominican Republic, Nicaragua, Trinidad and Tobago, D.R. of the Congo and Ireland,” having signed it. Pretty impressive, no? And they say that’s just a partial list.

The Two Michelles hope to get lots of signatures by July 9, 2012, then they’ll wrap things up and present the petition to People magazine.
