Andrew Lloyd Webber: 'Eurovision racism hurt UK acts'

Andrew Lloyd Webber has said that racism in Europe is a reason for the UK's poor performances in the Eurovision Song Contest.

The composer's Your Country Needs You TV show picked 2009 entrant and later-Sugababe Jade Ewen, who finished fifth in Russia with a song co-written by Lloyd Webber.

"I don't think there's any point beating around the bush," Lloyd Webber told Radio Times.

"Did you see the Eurovision Song Contest this year? Well, if you had seen it, you might have noticed one thing - I don't think there was one black face on the programme."

He continued: "At the press conference in Moscow, I was asked, 'Why have you brought a black artist?'

"I said, 'Because she is the most talented artist that we had and I think she's a major, major star'. I think we would have come second but there's a problem when you go further east."

Lloyd Webber added: "It doesn't mean that we would necessarily have won that year but we could have come second.

"If you're talking about Western Europe - Germany, fine; France, fine; Spain, fine; Greece, fine; Scandinavian countries, fine. But Ukraine? Not so good."

During the interview, Lloyd Webber also claimed that none of the acts on The Voice UK could sing in tune.

Race relations are very different in Europe than they are in America.

As a European I would say general xenophobia is a bigger problem than racism. Prejudice against Romani people and muslims is rampant.

yeah xenophobia is a bigger problem than racism, the hate just seems to be directed at anyone who isn't the from said country imo.

yeah, and I believe the xenophobia errupts so easily because of the 'loss' of a national identity for so many countries. Racism is still there but the xenophobia takes the upper hand.

Yeah totally. Southern Europe in particular is very xenophobic towards North Africans and Muslims. It's largely compounded by illegal immigration.

ia completely, it seems to be more xenophobia than blatant racism... if some random creeper accuses you of stealing jobs, you're screwed even if you're white (for example eastern european immigrants).
evridis 3rd-Jul-2012 11:37 pm (UTC)
yes this is exactly the case in my home country. the biggest prejudice is against (white) eastern europeans ~stealing our jobs~

Yep pretty much. I also noticed (comments under news stories, especially when those France shootings were going on)that people are developing a hatred toward Jews, IDEK how that happened here since there aren't many Jews here at all and since our people died right alongside them in camps. It's worrying.

spot on. Polish immigrants - basically eastern europeans are getting such hate in the UK right now because of Xenophobia. they're taking our jobs yada yada.

yeah, i always got the sense that if you're not a white western european, you'll have a hard time.
