Ed Sheeran covers "Pony" by Ginuwine


ThisisRnB.com caught up with burgeoning UK singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran while he was visiting New York City in promotion for his debut album "+" and rehearsing for his sold-out show at Bowery Ballroom. While his own music straddles the line of acoustic, folk, alternative and pop, Ed is a big fan of Hip-Hop and R&B has well. Upon speaking with him the 21-year old singer jumped into an impromptu acoustic rendition of one of his favorite '90s R&B joints "Pony" by Ginuwine. you know, they released the soundtrack for the movie a few months ago and i was bitching about how Pony wasn't on it...and now apparently it is. I DON'T KNOW IF I CAN HANDLE MYSELF TONIGHT AT THIS MOVIE!!!!!

I'm actually really sick of people jumping over white kid's dicks for doing acoustic renditions of R&B songs. It really rubs me the wrong way. It's like "Oh good now we can enjoy black music without the black people!" especially when it comes to media coverage.

I understand why you are saying this and I think there is valid underlying logic. However, I would react similarly if anyone covered Pony by Ginuwine. I just really really like this song and have not stopped listening to it since it came out. (Like its been in rotation since the 90s for me).

that's just a broad generalization though. youtube is a cesspool of the worst kind of people on the internet, of course they're going to say ignorant shit. we can't side-eye every white artist who does a creative cover of a song...just because BiebersGrrrrl09 might say how much "better" it is than Flo Rida's "black" version. c'mon now.

Why would you say this though? He's just covering a song he likes. Is it a crime for this guy to like a song and cover it? Black artist songs off limits? This is really not fair at all. He's a talented artist, and was just giving his rendition of the song. Why does everything have to default to this. White artsits do R&B and I've seen white artists doing songs that are "of their genre." I am really troubled by this way of thinking, no personal offense to you. Just b/c majority of songs w/in the R&B genre are by black artists, doesn't mean it's just a black genre and no one else is allowed to touch it. Black artists cover rock songs too are they not allowed?

If we're looking at this history of music it's actually mainly black artists who are legends in the genre and there is a thread of that influence in every genre. Should nobody sing a song anymore?
