'Fifty Shades of Grey' Author EL James Earning $1m a Week

0507F_ELjames40p

Author EL James is reportedly earning over $1 million a week for her Fifty Shades trilogy. The writer, whose erotic novel Fifty Shades of Grey originally started as Twilight fanfiction, has recently broken a slew of literary records.

Earlier this week, Fifty Shades of Grey was confirmed as the fastest adult paperback to sell one million copies, beating The Da Vinci Code by Dan Brown. The book also became the first Kindle ebook to sell over one million and together with its sequels, has become the first trilogy to sell over 100,000 of each installment.

These records have contributed to James's estimated income of $1.35 million a week, according to Celebritynetworth.com.

"It's safe to assume that E.L. James has long ago sold enough copies to repay her seven-figure book advance, which means at this point she is earning the standard 7% royalty on every $14 paperback and 25% royalty on every $10 ebook," the website suggested.

"In the last month, James has sold 4 million paperbacks and 1 million ebooks, which equates to $2.94 million in paperback royalties and $2.497 million in ebook royalties."

The website added that James would probably be in line for a $20 million royalty cheque in September, based on current and expected sales in the coming months.

Last week, Mark Wahlberg revealed that his production company almost obtained the film rights to Fifty Shades of Grey, before Universal and Focus secured the adaptation.

every $14 paperback

...$14? Paperback? Is this normal?
queenweasley 29th-Jun-2012 02:48 pm (UTC)
The price, you mean? Yup.
theratwhispers 29th-Jun-2012 02:49 pm (UTC)
Yeah, that is a typical price, for that size of paperback.
imnotasquirrel 29th-Jun-2012 02:51 pm (UTC)
since it's not mass market paperback, yeah.
squirrels_oh_no 29th-Jun-2012 03:07 pm (UTC)
But many places won't sell it for that much. I think it's $8.99 at Sam's.

Why do I know this?
sandstorm 29th-Jun-2012 03:09 pm (UTC)
See, on the military bases, they're selling it for that much too...I've never seen it as 14$, but I haven't been in a real bookstore in ages.
kimberwyn 29th-Jun-2012 07:43 pm (UTC)
mte, I'm like, when did books get that expensive? I still remember them being lik $5.95....
jessashoutbaby 1st-Jul-2012 03:06 pm (UTC)
Yes, sadly. Some are even more. That's why I get all my books on sale, many of them used.

I hate how much mediocrity is rewarded in our society.
emmandemms 29th-Jun-2012 02:55 pm (UTC)
this is well below mediocre level though
jcreds87 29th-Jun-2012 05:42 pm (UTC)
Yes! I am trying SO hard to get into the first book, but Lord help me...it is so difficult for me to get past all of the frequent, stupid character descriptions.

I was ranting to my co-worker this morning about it - no normal person walks around, sexily biting their lip or blushing constantly. I can't get over how dumb Ana sounds and how "dark and brooding" Grey's depicted as. /rant

For real. The fastest selling paperback before this was another poorly written book. It's depressing.

merwild 29th-Jun-2012 02:56 pm (UTC)
People need to stop buying this shit!
rangemanllc 29th-Jun-2012 05:20 pm (UTC)
Thank you. It is a fucking miserable mess! Jesus Christ, that shit needs an editor STAT! I read over this pile of shit when it was being written as a Twilight fanfic. It was a steaming pile of cat poop then as it is now. What the fuck at all the people spending hard earned dollars on this rubbish. There are better erotic novels out there people. For fuck sake, look around, stop rewarding this bitch.

side eye-ing and judging everyone who bought this glorified toiled paper.
theratwhispers 29th-Jun-2012 02:50 pm (UTC)
Quality does not matter anymore. Anyone who says "traditional publishers control quality" are full of bullshit and should feel bad.
imnotasquirrel 29th-Jun-2012 02:54 pm (UTC)
a lot of what comes out in traditional publishing is crap, but i still think the odds are better compared to what comes out in self-publishing. if 99% of traditionally published books are crap, then 99.999999999% of self-published books are crap. it's a relative thing.
theratwhispers 29th-Jun-2012 02:56 pm (UTC)
99% of everything is crap. However, a lot of publishers have it in their heads, that they are actually publishing quality, I just can't buy that line at all. They need to stop, lbr.
iamtheliquorr 30th-Jun-2012 12:00 am (UTC)
completely agree with this comment

trad. publishers brought us twilight which i hold directly responsible for the microwaved shit that is 50 shades

and it also brought us the selection which is slowly killing my sanity one liveblog at a time
