'Dark Knight Rises' Box Office: Batman Could Be Bigger Than 'The Avengers'

"The Dark Knight Rises" doesn't come out for three weeks, but the film is already tracking to open with as much as $150 million in ticket sales, the Los Angeles Times reported on Thursday.

Considering "The Dark Knight Rises" has 21 promotional days remaining, the film could potentially reach the opening weekend record that "Marvel's The Avengers" set earlier this year.

Not that you'd be totally surprised: "The Dark Knight," Christopher Nolan's 2008 Batman film, earned $158.4 million during its opening weekend, a record which stood until "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2" broke it last summer. "Marvel's The Avengers" surpassed "Potter's" record when it earned $207.4 million during its opening weekend in May.

Of course, should "The Dark Knight Rises" top "The Avengers," it would be quite impressive because of what the film has working against its success. Unlike "The Avengers," the Batman finale will not be available in 3D, which adds an additional charge to movie tickets. Nolan's film is also rumored to run for two hours and 45 minutes, more than 20 minutes longer than "The Avengers"; the longer a film, the less showtimes it can squeeze into a given day.

For more on the early "Dark Knight Rises" tracking numbers, head over to the Los Angeles Times. "The Dark Knight Rises" is out in theaters on July 20.

If it matches The Avengers, I'll be really surprised, given all the aforementioned reasons. It's gonna make a big fucking bucketful of cash for WB, but it won't break records. AND THAT'S OKAY FFS.

It is okay. I just love watching my faves win. Batman is my man and I want him to dominate in everything, even if I absolutely love the competition. Lol.

Big fucking bucketful has just become my new favorite phrase.

I got my midnight tickets. ^.^ Didn't do the same for The Avengers, but I did see it twice.

I'm not as excited for this as I was for The Dark Knight. I hate to say that I'm a little "meh" about a Batman movie but I am and I don't know why. :\
halfslytherin 28th-Jun-2012 11:54 pm (UTC)
Same here.

Are...are you me?

IDK, it doesn't have the same wide-demographic appeal as The Avengers. Everyone knows how violent TDK was, there won't (and shouldn't be) kids packing the theaters with their parents like at TA.

I really wish The WB would give up on a JLA movie. Let's do something different, like a BatFamily/Batman Inc movie.

I just don't want another reboot in the next five years
deadtree 28th-Jun-2012 11:34 pm (UTC)
agreed. Batfamily seems more current, anyway.
kofo4 28th-Jun-2012 11:19 pm (UTC)
Already sick of avengers tbh. I still like it but lol was it overhyped, i mean really?
naveedchick 28th-Jun-2012 11:31 pm (UTC)
I would love to go see the midnight show, but buses stop running shortly after one :(
deadtree 28th-Jun-2012 11:34 pm (UTC)

that being said I check every day to see TDKR midnight screening tickets are still there and hold them lovingly
antique_faery 30th-Jun-2012 03:44 am (UTC)
Yeah, unfortunately this is what's going to happen. But if it gets close despite the disadvantages, technically that's a feat on its own and I consider that a win by default!
fight4thislove 28th-Jun-2012 11:53 pm (UTC)
Much like TDK, I'll watch a bootleg
lostinshalott 29th-Jun-2012 12:16 am (UTC)
I don't care I have my ticket booked IMAX here I come, it's going to be such an intense day.
laminy 29th-Jun-2012 01:10 am (UTC)
Could be? I'm not even a fan of the series and I know that it will be bigger than The Avengers, which I loved. I assumed that this was common knowledge.

I am constantly tracking how many tickets have been sold for the midnight showing at the theatre I work at. Thus far, 18/200. I know it will eventually sell out, I just like checking.
geenanana 29th-Jun-2012 02:05 am (UTC)
oh please...I don't even know why this is a topic of discussion.
OF COURSE Batman will beat avengers!

audrienne 29th-Jun-2012 03:11 am (UTC)
I keep forgetting when TDKR comes out. All I know is it's taking too damn long!
