The Lady Doth Protest Too Much, Methinks; Yet Another Pro BBall Player Fined For Using Anti-Gay Slur


New York Knicks forward Amar'e Stoudemire was fined $50,000 today by the NBA for calling a fan "fag" on Twitter late last week, the AP reports:

Stu Jackson, the league's executive vice president of basketball operations, announced the fine Tuesday in a release, calling Stoudemire's language offensive and derogatory...

...Stoudemire also issued an apology in a statement on Tuesday.

"I am a huge supporter of civil rights for all people," he said. "I am disappointed in myself for my statement to a fan. I should have known better and there is no excuse."

Well, at least it is a small step above the "I'm sorry if my words offended anyone, it was meant as a joke" route most folks take on Twitter. Still though, Twitter apologies are so lame.

My thing is... you don't "slip up" and use a word that you do not ever otherwise use. I have never slipped up and called someone a "faggot" because it's not in my vocabulary any more than, idk, "ispind." So when people say that and then pull out the "I respect all people, my bad" it's like... maybe in theory you do, but in practice, "faggot" is obviously a word you use, and that is not respectful.

This is what I thought about people using the word "gay" in a derogatory sense. Unfortunately, I know many people (several of them adults well into or beyond their 30s) who still use it on a regular basis. Every time they use it I ask, "What are you, ten?" My sister used to do it as well (even after I came out), but I finally managed to get her to break that shitty habit.

I was playing some pickup ball this weekend, and it is crazy when I get outside of my bubble of tolerance that I generally stay in, because the f-word was flying and calling everything gay was going on, and every time I grimaced and said "Don't say that", which was always met with disbelief or thinking I was kidding, but I was just amazed how some people really just don't give a fuck.

It didn't even affect me other than make me sad for people, TBH. They were incredulous that I would even care since I came with the girl that I'm dating, and they couldn't understand why I gave a shit if I wasn't gay. It was unbelievable. The saddest part was that it was all black and latin dudes, so despite the fact that they have probably been victims of bigotry, they couldn't understand that what they were doing was wrong.
