Smash Season 2 Casting Exclusive: Competition for Tom and Julia?

It turns out that not all the young’uns on Smash have dreams to croon on stage in the spotlight. Some just want their names in the Playbill.

TVLine has learned exclusively that NBC’s musical drama has added theater vet Andy Mientus to its Season 2 ensemble, in the series regular role of Kyle, a poor kid from Brooklyn with dreams of writing for Broadway. Maybe he’s just the plucky guy Derek needs to deliver a quick turnaround on new pages when Tom and Julia are off yapping about adulterous lovers and religious beaus?

Kyle is also best friends with Jimmy, another Brooklynite/Season 2 arrival to be played by Newsies‘ Tony-nominated Jeremy Jordan.

A newcomer to TV, Mientus’ Smash-worthy credits include a stint as Hansche in the U.S. tour of Spring Awakening and a role in the recently closed Off-Broadway revival of the Stephen King-inspired musical Carrie.

Yes, this show needs more Broadway talent! Oh and I just want TPTB to have Tom sing more.

Got on stage seats to one of the Spring Awakening tour shows so I got to sit next to him :3

I was just about to post the exact same thing. I loved him in Spring Awakening. I saw it probably ten times and he was such a nice guy offstage too.

Please just kill the son off. Like, a piano falls on him and everyone breaks out into song.
josiefier 26th-Jun-2012 05:09 pm (UTC)
I quite like this idea.

Honestly, they had their chance to kill him off when he was in jail
& then they could have sung a heart-broken rendition of 'I fought the law.'

I want Karen and Derek to hook up. Make it happen.

I love their chemistry; but, I'm DNW with the thought of them as a pair

I think she should use him for rebound sex and get all her feelings out, tbh. I don't trust him to be any type of boyfriend to her lol

I was soooo bored with the first season. I got to the episode before Uma Thurman came. Pretty sure I'm gonna give it another shot due to the major cast changes. Should I bother finishing the first season? Did it get any better?
cruel_fortuna 26th-Jun-2012 05:21 pm (UTC)
Don't bother finishing the first season.

All you need to know is that Derek overrules everyone in the end & casts Karen as Marilyn because he 'sees it'. This leads to Ivy pulling a 'life imitating art' in that she takes a whole bottle of pills & ... fade to black.

// It's pretty obvs. that Karen's going to come in, scream & then start flailing until Tom comes in & pushes her out of the way while telling Julia to call the paramedics.

he looks just like my friend's bf
robertsbox_xo 26th-Jun-2012 05:37 pm (UTC)
with these castings and firings season 2 is already better than season 1
x_rose_tyler_x 26th-Jun-2012 05:49 pm (UTC)
They're doing the right choices when it comes to casting but I don't trust Safran. He'll probably get Ivy in an even more destructive relationship or something. My beautiful flawless bitch is too good for all the characters on this show tbh.
fromahippie 26th-Jun-2012 05:59 pm (UTC)
season 1 was a mess
I hope season 2 is much better. I might take a look.

Only watch it for McPhee's fine ass occasionally but thats about it. Actually the insecure blond would get it too

love, love, LOVE andy! you really couldn't meet a nicer guy if you tried. i miss him and lucas wells and matt shingledecker hanging out together during their Spring Awakening days.
the_jcm 26th-Jun-2012 09:36 pm (UTC)
I saw him in Spring Awakening! He was really good so it'll be exciting to see him on Smash.
colorsblend 26th-Jun-2012 10:46 pm (UTC)
I loved him so much in Spring Awakening. Guess I'll have to give Smash another shot.

Wtf, Andy Mientus is on ONTD, this makes no sense to me.

I have to say, he's not my favorite performer in general and not my favorite Hanschen in particular, but I am so effing charmed by how much you can tell that he loves it.

artemisbones94 27th-Jun-2012 02:09 am (UTC)
Don't know how i feel about this show anymore, but still in it for anyone who isn't Karen or the son. I like McPhee, but her character is one-dimensional and poorly written and i can't stand her vague Mary Sue-ishness.
so_chic_doll 28th-Jun-2012 08:14 am (UTC)
Dammit-- they're casting so many good Broadway kids now. I gotta watch it again.
