It turns out that not all the young’uns on Smash have dreams to croon on stage in the spotlight. Some just want their names in the Playbill.
TVLine has learned exclusively that NBC’s musical drama has added theater vet Andy Mientus to its Season 2 ensemble, in the series regular role of Kyle, a poor kid from Brooklyn with dreams of writing for Broadway. Maybe he’s just the plucky guy Derek needs to deliver a quick turnaround on new pages when Tom and Julia are off yapping about adulterous lovers and religious beaus?
Kyle is also best friends with Jimmy, another Brooklynite/Season 2 arrival to be played by Newsies‘ Tony-nominated Jeremy Jordan.
A newcomer to TV, Mientus’ Smash-worthy credits include a stint as Hansche in the U.S. tour of Spring Awakening and a role in the recently closed Off-Broadway revival of the Stephen King-inspired musical Carrie.

Yes, this show needs more Broadway talent! Oh and I just want TPTB to have Tom sing more.

& then they could have sung a heart-broken rendition of 'I fought the law.'
All you need to know is that Derek overrules everyone in the end & casts Karen as Marilyn because he 'sees it'. This leads to Ivy pulling a 'life imitating art' in that she takes a whole bottle of pills & ... fade to black.
// It's pretty obvs. that Karen's going to come in, scream & then start flailing until Tom comes in & pushes her out of the way while telling Julia to call the paramedics.
I hope season 2 is much better. I might take a look.
I have to say, he's not my favorite performer in general and not my favorite Hanschen in particular, but I am so effing charmed by how much you can tell that he loves it.
