Teaser Trailer

Behind the Scenes

This year, Showtime's ground-breaking TV series "Weeds" will come to a close.

The premium network will conclude series creator Jenji Kohan's acclaimed pot comedy after eight seasons. Weeds helped pave the way for other daring cable shows and made Showtime a competitive force in the original series game.

"There were two shows, 'Weeds' and 'Dexter,' that really got Showtime taken seriously for cutting-edge original programming," says Showtime entertainment president David Nevins. "How they get brought home is really important. In this case, both for the sake of the two women behind the show [Kohan and Golden Globe-winning star Mary-Louise Parker] and an audience that's really invested in the show. TV fans love nothing better than to complain about how shows end and we really want to end this one the right way."

Kohan admits she's "sad" about the news, noting "sometimes ignorance is bliss," but the writer does appreciate the rare opportunity to creatively wrap up a show. "I'm so proud of what we do here and that it's about a strong woman lead who's really flawed," she says of her protagonist, Nancy Botwin (Parker). "We get to do comedy right up against drama, which a lot of shows don't get the opportunity to do."

The final season will quickly resolve this year's assassination attempt cliffhanger, and fans can expect a time jump and a return to the suburbs. Beyond that, Kohan hasn't yet decided how to conclude Nancy's tale. "We wrack our brains every year for crazy cliffhangers and we're trying to figure out how to top ourselves," she says.

Showtime and "Weeds''" studio Lionsgate Television Group have full faith that Kohan will deliver a stellar final batch of episodes. "No matter how close she's gone to the edge of everything falling apart, she reels the story back in, grounds it, and brings you back," says Lionsgate TV Group president Kevin Beggs. "It's an art form."

Weeds premiered in 2005 and, along with other titles, pioneered an edgy adult-cable programming renaissance that not only boosted Showtime but inspired similar risk-taking content on networks. Weeds particularly broke ground with Parker's Golden Globe-winning portrayal of a suburban pot-dealing matriarch, a performance that was later followed by other female anti-hero programs like Showtime's "Nurse Jackie" and FX's "Damages."

"From a creative standpoint, the show broke a bunch of barriers," Beggs says. "It became one of the most talked about cable comedies and ushered in a new era. Jenji's unique voice skewered hypocrisy; whether attitudes towards drug use, racism, sexism or suburbia."

The final season of "Weeds" premieres Sunday, July 1 at 10 p.m. on Showtime.

I hope Hunter finds a good, successful show to be (shirtless) on after Weeds ends.
dejamort 19th-Jun-2012 12:02 am (UTC)
YES PLEASE
applesforapril 19th-Jun-2012 12:47 am (UTC)
i think he would make a good finnick.
emofordino 19th-Jun-2012 01:44 am (UTC)
i was always really fond of him as peeta, before they cast josh hutcherson. he is very nice to look at and he's not a bad actor at all so i definitely wouldn't be mad if he was cast as finnick, although i've never thought of him that way before just now.
notoriousreign 19th-Jun-2012 12:54 am (UTC)
I hope so too.
heygrumpy 19th-Jun-2012 01:47 am (UTC)
seriously, a nice cable or subscription channel. his abs are the only reason i've watched the past 4 seasons
icyblugurl 18th-Jun-2012 11:34 pm (UTC)
UNF Hunter!
ch33rylips 18th-Jun-2012 11:34 pm (UTC)
Lord I stopped watching, but is Shane less or more of a creep???
marinade 18th-Jun-2012 11:36 pm (UTC)
Judging by that haircut, I'd say more of a creep.
cyberghostface 18th-Jun-2012 11:36 pm (UTC)
Well he killed someone.
cricketgrl 18th-Jun-2012 11:38 pm (UTC)
And masturbates to his mom's pic.
ch33rylips 18th-Jun-2012 11:45 pm (UTC)
I'm sorry San I should have been clearly in my og comment, I stopped watching last season when they all were in NY.
oatmealmonster 18th-Jun-2012 11:49 pm (UTC)
I think he is less of a creep. He is still a creep though lol
my_badgers_27 18th-Jun-2012 11:35 pm (UTC)
How is this show? I watched a few episodes and liked it but some friends said that later seasons got weird.
superpchan 18th-Jun-2012 11:38 pm (UTC)
Just watch the first three seasons. Four was okay, but the others are kind of mediocre in comparison. Once they left their suburb, the show fell apart for me.
my_badgers_27 18th-Jun-2012 11:45 pm (UTC)
Is that when she goes to jail? And do you happen to know how realistic the show is?
cyberghostface 18th-Jun-2012 11:46 pm (UTC)
It basically suffers from a combination of Cerebus Syndrome and the writers just making it up as they go along with the show changing gears each season.
oatmealmonster 18th-Jun-2012 11:50 pm (UTC)
the first 3 seasons are a lot more humorous. after that a lot of the comedy is sort of gone, not all, but a lot.
boweeko 19th-Jun-2012 12:06 am (UTC)
I really like it. The earlier seasons were a lot better imo but I think that is because it was more original and new. Now we have a lot of "R-rated" comedies on TV so it isn't as groundbreaking. Still a very entertaining show though.
konichiwacobra 18th-Jun-2012 11:35 pm (UTC)
What even happening with this show? I stopped watching right around the time Helia showed back up and Silas started selling on his own...

I used to really love this show, but it just became a mess at some point.
josiefier 18th-Jun-2012 11:37 pm (UTC)
I NEED MORE JUSTIN KIRK IN MY LIFE! That said, I've been there through the good, bad, and horrible-nesses of the show and I'll admit I'm a little sad to see it ending. But at least they're getting a proper end.
notoriousreign 19th-Jun-2012 01:06 am (UTC)
JUSTIN KIRK IS A PROPHET OF THE LORD~
josiefier 19th-Jun-2012 01:48 am (UTC)
I refuse to admit how many years we've known that for, Prior lol.
rhymenocerouss 19th-Jun-2012 01:44 am (UTC)
justin kirk is flawless lbr
superboy 18th-Jun-2012 11:37 pm (UTC)
I AM SO READY FOR THIS.
gabriella 19th-Jun-2012 12:07 am (UTC)
flawless icon, bb
pandaklr 18th-Jun-2012 11:37 pm (UTC)
The show would have ended beautifully when the wildfire was burning through Agrestic. I think I will just choose that episode to be the last in my mind.

ps nancy looks a lil photoshopped up there.
20727 19th-Jun-2012 01:20 am (UTC)
yeah ia
cyberghostface 18th-Jun-2012 11:38 pm (UTC)
Honestly they should have wrapped things up two seasons ago. When people complain about Dexter or True Blood losing it I just look at Weeds. It's just all over the place and I have no idea what it's even trying to be at this point.
josiefier 18th-Jun-2012 11:41 pm (UTC)
I always figure that they had a two-year plan (if that) and just never expected to last that long or even longer, and therefore never planned beyond that.
malorn 19th-Jun-2012 12:47 am (UTC)
Completely agree. All three of these shows jumped the shark for me long ago.
ashe_frost 18th-Jun-2012 11:39 pm (UTC)
Am I the only one who is still really psyched for this?
_winner 18th-Jun-2012 11:41 pm (UTC)
me too, bb
josiefier 18th-Jun-2012 11:43 pm (UTC)
Nope, I'm there till the end no matter what.
saikaro_x 18th-Jun-2012 11:58 pm (UTC)
no, i am too!
canwedoitagn 19th-Jun-2012 12:09 am (UTC)
i am.
cass_star 19th-Jun-2012 12:51 am (UTC)
I have an unnatural love for Hunter Parrish and can't wait to have him back on my TV but I love Silas as well and I'll miss him. :(
notoriousreign 19th-Jun-2012 01:17 am (UTC)
Yeah, I get excited every year. I'm gonna miss Hunter on my TV screen, but at least he's been making it on Broadway.

Still, I've been into this show since the fourth season. I can't quit it and I'm pumped too. xD
godrevypoint 19th-Jun-2012 03:22 am (UTC)
i am too...even though it's a total shitshow and i fucking hate nancy and how lacking her character development is, i love all the other characters and still find this show extremely entertaining
sleepless_ghost 19th-Jun-2012 06:07 am (UTC)
No, me too!
lreservoirldogs 19th-Jun-2012 06:37 am (UTC)
I hated the last season but yeah I'm still invested.
vervain 18th-Jun-2012 11:39 pm (UTC)
best thing about this show was celia and her daughter missed them when they were written out :( elizabeth perkins was shocked when she wasn't asked back for the next season.

i'll still watch it as i don't like to leave things unfinished.
superpchan 18th-Jun-2012 11:39 pm (UTC)
Elizabeth was my favorite thing about the show. It's not the same without her.
vervain 18th-Jun-2012 11:49 pm (UTC)
i know and first two seasons she was such a great contrast to nancy's family.
cyberghostface 18th-Jun-2012 11:40 pm (UTC)
Did they even give an explanation for her absence? I can't remember.
sashafarce 19th-Jun-2012 01:23 am (UTC)
i feel like this happened to all the really good characters other than Andy.
_winner 18th-Jun-2012 11:39 pm (UTC)
I'm such a Mary-Louise stan. I love this bitch. So sad the show in ending.
strwbrri_shrtck 18th-Jun-2012 11:40 pm (UTC)
seconded
notoriousreign 19th-Jun-2012 01:20 am (UTC)
Yus, I love her. <3
hedgerowbustle 18th-Jun-2012 11:40 pm (UTC)
I recently started watching Weeds on Netflix. Finished all 7 seasons in a month! Bummer though, I don't have Showtime to watch the new season!

I hope they don't kill Shane, he's my fav.
expromqueen 18th-Jun-2012 11:43 pm (UTC)
i always watch it at project free tv http://www.free-tv-video-online.me
expromqueen 18th-Jun-2012 11:42 pm (UTC)
i don't rly care if weeds isn't as good as it used to be, i still love it XD i hope it's not andy, i love him too much
josiefier 18th-Jun-2012 11:44 pm (UTC)
Seconding all of this.
stilldelicious 19th-Jun-2012 12:15 am (UTC)
Agreed, and I think I'm one of the few that doesn't think it got THAT bad, it's just that it changed a lot since it began and I think people couldn't handle it, or didn't want to. They wanted it to remain the same show it always was.
expromqueen 19th-Jun-2012 12:22 am (UTC)
i don't dislike the newer seasons, either. ia that the agrestic seasons were better, but the show is still rly funny
notoriousreign 19th-Jun-2012 01:20 am (UTC)
Yeah, I still love the show. I don't think it got worse but whatever.

I hope it's not Andy either. He is my life~
logan_lerman 18th-Jun-2012 11:48 pm (UTC)
can it be doug who dies please
his character should have left seasons ago imo
vervain 18th-Jun-2012 11:49 pm (UTC)
doug and i hate doug. i was so confused when he kept turning up everywhere they happened to be!
cricketgrl 18th-Jun-2012 11:51 pm (UTC)
I really don't understand why they've kept him around for this long. He adds nothing to the story and is just baggage. They could have created fuller story without wasting time with him.
logan_lerman 18th-Jun-2012 11:52 pm (UTC)
seriously. such a waste of space
cass_star 19th-Jun-2012 12:54 am (UTC)
I agree, I can't stand Doug. But for some reason people REALLY love him.
emofordino 19th-Jun-2012 01:52 am (UTC)
IA. i get that shows need a character to hate or whatever but i just really don't think doug adds anything of value to the show. at least not since like, season 2-3.
