SYTYCD alumn and former LDS member Benji Schwimmer comes out

Homosexuality is relatively accepted in the dance world, and "So You Think  You Can Dance" winner Benji Schwimmer certainly isn't the first alum from the show to come out (his Season 2 runner-up, Travis Wall, is out, as is Season 1 winner Nick Lazzarini and last season's runner-up, Sasha Mallory). But Benji, who is the brother of "Dancing With The Stars" pro Lacey Schwimmer, also comes from the Mormon world--so his decision to live life as an openly gay man, which he publicly announced this week, was an extremely agonized one.

In a fascinating and frank new in-depth interview with MormonStories.org, Benji discusses his struggle to come to terms with his sexuality and his devout Latter-Day Saints faith. The interview begins with the formerly closeted dancer talking about his time with Evergreen, an organization set up to "help" Latter-Day Saints overcome their homosexual urges; he reveals that he even started his own Yahoo! Group, when he was 17 years old, for conflicted LDS teens wanting to re-identify as straight. He later talks about his relationship with an ex-girlfriend, and another relationship with the male "love of his life" that eventually didn't work out, but that changed him forever. "The happiest moments of my life were when I was with that boy," Benji recalls.

Benji also discusses his past struggles with thoughts of suicide and even the idea of castrating himself and taking reverse-hormonal pills so that he would no longer have any homosexual urges. "Do you believe that I should be celibate for the rest of my life? Is man meant to be alone in this life?" he asked one church advisor, who warned Benji that any traditional marriage to a woman would be doomed, but also told him that a physical relationship with a man was out of the question.

I hate what SYTYCD has become. It used to have so much variety but now all they ever do is contemporary and the only dancers they have on the show nowadays are contemporary dancers. So boring!
pikapika217 16th-Jun-2012 11:31 pm (UTC)
I was unsure on his season as he reminded me of SO many campy straight theater guys but I'm so SO happy for him and I can't imagine the emotions he had to go through to get to this place of peace.

I LOVED his dance with Heidi and he & Donyelle are my favorite partership STILL! -

Top 5 favorite SYTYCD dances for sure, #1 being Ramalama Bang Bang (the original one, not the reproduction)

Hmmmm that is so sad. He was incredibly positive on SYTYCD.

Flawless and accepting queen Lacey of course.

I have no idea WHY I thought he was straight but I did lol! But good for him either way.

Because he talked about girls and getting married someday all through the season. It made me sad to watch because it wasn't believable.

And people wonder why he stayed in the closet for so long. All that shit he went through must have been like hell for him. So proud of Benji for making it out. He was my favorite of season 2. Also, I've been watching a lot of his post-sytycd performances and he's totally amazing. Even better then when he was on the show. Must be so unfair to have to compete against him. Wonder how many trophies he's got at home. lol

Also, it really ticks me off when people say shit like, "omg I thought everyone knew he was gay...who cares?" the interview was more about the struggles he faced when trying to do so rather then the actual gay annoucement.

He seems like such a sweet guy. I don't know what kind of well wishes to send someone who turned away from strict Mormon ideals to cone out, but.. those well wishes.
superhetoric 16th-Jun-2012 11:48 pm (UTC)
it can't be said enough that any ideology that drives people to feel like discrimination and cruelty are divinely justified is just fucking wrong. doesn't matter what else you like about mormonism - until they officially renounce this part of the faith as a whole, this is as much a part of mormonism as anything that's good. and a member of that faith wants to lead this fucking country.
blackspyderlily 16th-Jun-2012 11:49 pm (UTC)
Hm. Not surprised. Hung out with him a couple of times. Cool guy.
oshunanat 16th-Jun-2012 11:50 pm (UTC)
Good for him. I hope he's got the inner peace now that he clearly struggled to obtain.
ladycakes 16th-Jun-2012 11:58 pm (UTC)
Aw damn. Fucking Mormons. Benji is delightful and so happy he is finally able to find a release from the cult he was raised in. Telling your children they are evil for WHO THEY ARE is child abuse.
