Russell Brand furious at Graham Norton

The comedian lost his cool when the BBC star brought up his divorce from pop star Katy Perry

In a furious TV outburst last night Russell Brand accused talk show host Graham Norton of making his mum cry.

The comedian lost his cool when the BBC star brought up his divorce from pop star Katy Perry.

Looking out into the audience and ignoring the question, Brand blasted: “My mum is here. She got upset when you dragged up my marriage.

“I saw her cry, Graham. That’s the reality because it’s real people, Graham, that’s my real mum.

"I have come here to promote a film and you made my mum cry. I don’t see you as that sort of person, Graham.”

Norton, who was also quizzing actress Emily Blunt, 29, and singer Paloma Faith, 26, replied: “I don’t see myself as that kind of person.” But Brand hit back: “And yet you are.”

Stammering over his words, Norton, 49, then explained Katy had appeared on his chat show the week before.

He added: “If I had not asked anything it would have been weird.”

But Brand, 37, scoffed: “Will people sit and think ‘Oh that’s odd?’.

“What I would have done, mate, in your position is come up to me before the show and gone ‘Eh, listen it’s a bit odd your ex-missus was on last week. I might mention it, is that OK?’

"But in all of the chatting and the research backstage, no one mentioned it.”

In an attempt to cool things, Norton grovelled: “Well, I’m sorry.”

The BBC1 show, which was aired last night, started with Norton talking to Blunt.

When the chat turned to marriage, Brand, who stars in new movie Rock of Ages, appeared to lose interest.

But he was forced to speak when Norton mentioned he was sitting where his ex-wife was the previous week.

The miffed comic said: “Some human beings get married and hopefully it works out for them and maybe it won’t.

"If people get divorced, maybe that is a sad thing. I don’t know what is your show about?”

Minutes later Brand said Norton had “stabbed him in the back” for mentioning Katy before launching into his tirade.

Stony-faced Brand left moments after filming on Thursday night with mother Barbara.

A source said: “Graham didn’t mean to upset Russell but felt he had to ask at least one question about Katy.

"Other journalists have quizzed him on it all week so perhaps he’d had enough.”

Brand filed for divorce in December after 14 months of marriage. It is due to be finalised at the end of this month.

oh get over it russell, two high profile people divorcing is always going to be commented on. i know he's probably sick of it but there's a professional way of dismissing it and moving on with the conversation and this isn't it.
marywebgirl 16th-Jun-2012 06:48 pm (UTC)
Plus this is really the first time he's done publicity for something since it happened. If this is still happening 5 years from now he has a right to get mad, but it's going to come up now.
emerald_soul 16th-Jun-2012 05:29 pm (UTC)
I love Graham, but he should know to have better tact than that.
sapphirespells 16th-Jun-2012 05:30 pm (UTC)
They kinda touched upon it on the Ellen show and he wasn't upset but I guess because his mom got upset it was different.

Way to be over-dramatic Russel. Your wedding was high profile, your marriage was high profile, of fucking course your divorce is also going to be high profile, deal with it.

He could have just told Graham that he didn't want to talk about it, instead of throwing a tantrum. Did he honestly think Graham wasn't going to mention it?

Came here to say it, she showed their wedding on a screen at the grammy's for fuck sake!
kydeon 16th-Jun-2012 07:54 pm (UTC)
Graham Norton didn't ask Katy about it the week prior when she was on.
queenoftea 16th-Jun-2012 09:23 pm (UTC)
I think Katy's management is probably much tighter, with regard to what she can get asked, etc. Almost all of Graham's questions for her were about her "documentary"
gjee 17th-Jun-2012 12:02 pm (UTC)
well the whole segment was about engagements, weddings, couples, etc because Emily Blunt was promoting her engagement movie so it makes sense in this episode's context

Well that sounds awkward! I understand why he got angry, but I don't think Graham meant any harm by it. Tbh, I would be surprised too if he didn't ask, Brand comes across as so open about everything. But to each their own.

I feel like this marriage was all an arrangement made to give him relevance in America and her relevance in the U.K. Marketing, nothing more, and it has met it's desired end/outcome.

I feel like Katy Perry is destined for a P!nk type career, wherein she has a number of catchy songs but no1curr.

Aw but I love Graham Norton ):
lil_creamsoda 16th-Jun-2012 05:34 pm (UTC)
oh please. since when do people only want to hear about movies celebrities promote and nothing about their personal lives? Is he brand new to the world? Of course the host is going to ask about his divorce when Katy was just on the show the week prior.
boogalooshaman 16th-Jun-2012 05:34 pm (UTC)
God i cannot fucking stand him.
coulditbesatan 16th-Jun-2012 05:56 pm (UTC)
If you mean Russell, I agree.
chaylay23 16th-Jun-2012 05:35 pm (UTC)
I love Graham to death and I completely understand where he was coming from. It would've been weird if he didn't ask about the divorce at all.

I'm sure he could've had someone mention it to Russell before hand to ask if it was okay but he shouldn't be criticized for asking. It's a touchy subject but Graham is certainly not the first interviewer to ask Russell about it.
n_rabanne 16th-Jun-2012 07:48 pm (UTC)
Did he ask Katy jw ??
kydeon 16th-Jun-2012 07:55 pm (UTC)
Katy was on the week before and was not asked.
flightbyzephyr 16th-Jun-2012 05:36 pm (UTC)
Uhh I don't remember this on the broadcast...
hola_meg_a_cola 16th-Jun-2012 05:47 pm (UTC)
It was cut out before it aired.
flightbyzephyr 16th-Jun-2012 07:38 pm (UTC)
Oh, then how does anyone know that it was said at all? Daily Mail doesn't site a source...
fromyourashes 16th-Jun-2012 05:36 pm (UTC)
I love them both to death, and I feel bad for Russell on a personal level, but he has to get used to it. He must have been having a shitty day, because he's been asked about his ex and their marriage a lot in interviews and is always cool about it.
ichdontthinksoo 16th-Jun-2012 05:38 pm (UTC)
Ugh, this bitch. A simple 'can we not talk about it?' would have sufficed. It's like Rihanna doing the whole Cake thing to get attention and getting butthurt over it. I understand being pissed if the interviewer crosses the line but don't act like you've always been keen on protecting your oh so holy privacy.

Why doesn't he do a clause for all interviews where he can't be asked about it? It's his fault for not doing this.
hobnailedboots 16th-Jun-2012 06:02 pm (UTC)
Victim blamer! :P

Seriously, though, whilst he's under no obligation to have a clause like that, I think that otherwise (especially on a chat show like Graham Norton) it's implicit that your personal life is fair game to be enquired about. From the article it doesn't sound as though Graham was overly invasive or anything, and so it seems like a bit of an overreaction from Russell.

As someone pointed out earlier, it's standard procedure to just say that you don't feel comfortable talking about something if a host asks you a question you don't want to answer.
swim_thedepths 16th-Jun-2012 08:40 pm (UTC)
I think it was more the fact his mom was in the audience and cried since she/he wasn't expecting it.
