Russell Brand furious at Graham Norton

The comedian lost his cool when the BBC star brought up his divorce from pop star Katy Perry

In a furious TV outburst last night Russell Brand accused talk show host Graham Norton of making his mum cry.

The comedian lost his cool when the BBC star brought up his divorce from pop star Katy Perry.

Looking out into the audience and ignoring the question, Brand blasted: “My mum is here. She got upset when you dragged up my marriage.

“I saw her cry, Graham. That’s the reality because it’s real people, Graham, that’s my real mum.

"I have come here to promote a film and you made my mum cry. I don’t see you as that sort of person, Graham.”

Norton, who was also quizzing actress Emily Blunt, 29, and singer Paloma Faith, 26, replied: “I don’t see myself as that kind of person.” But Brand hit back: “And yet you are.”

Stammering over his words, Norton, 49, then explained Katy had appeared on his chat show the week before.

He added: “If I had not asked anything it would have been weird.”

But Brand, 37, scoffed: “Will people sit and think ‘Oh that’s odd?’.

“What I would have done, mate, in your position is come up to me before the show and gone ‘Eh, listen it’s a bit odd your ex-missus was on last week. I might mention it, is that OK?’

"But in all of the chatting and the research backstage, no one mentioned it.”

In an attempt to cool things, Norton grovelled: “Well, I’m sorry.”

The BBC1 show, which was aired last night, started with Norton talking to Blunt.

When the chat turned to marriage, Brand, who stars in new movie Rock of Ages, appeared to lose interest.

But he was forced to speak when Norton mentioned he was sitting where his ex-wife was the previous week.

The miffed comic said: “Some human beings get married and hopefully it works out for them and maybe it won’t.

"If people get divorced, maybe that is a sad thing. I don’t know what is your show about?”

Minutes later Brand said Norton had “stabbed him in the back” for mentioning Katy before launching into his tirade.

Stony-faced Brand left moments after filming on Thursday night with mother Barbara.

A source said: “Graham didn’t mean to upset Russell but felt he had to ask at least one question about Katy.

"Other journalists have quizzed him on it all week so perhaps he’d had enough.”

Brand filed for divorce in December after 14 months of marriage. It is due to be finalised at the end of this month.

vanjar 16th-Jun-2012 06:16 pm (UTC)
Nope, they edited that part out of the broadcast. It was a fun show though.
gina_r_snape 17th-Jun-2012 01:06 am (UTC)
It was a fun show. And I couldn't tell from the edit that Russell was so unhappy with him at all.
kaiserschmarrn 16th-Jun-2012 05:22 pm (UTC)
Well, I understand his reaction tbh.
cricketgrl 16th-Jun-2012 05:28 pm (UTC)
When you're a celebrity, you're fodder for everyone. It's the price of fame and for making millions of dollars for only a few weeks of work a year.

If he doesn't like it he can go live a quiet life somewhere and stop baiting the media. When celebrities really want to quit the biz they know what to do.
hpxstac 16th-Jun-2012 07:06 pm (UTC)
Wow you sound bitter for some reason...I'm sure the only reason he went off is because the question upset his mom, which is an understandable reaction. I would berate anyone who noticeably made my mom cry. Aside from that, they never briefed Russell on the fact that they would be mentioning Katy on the show or in what context, which they should have done. If they had approached the subject in the right way and told him about it beforehand I'm sure he would have warned his mom about it, made a funny quip, and moved on.

Agreed. If you don't want every aspect of your life conceivably up for public examination and discussion, you are in the wrong line of business as a celebrity. Besides, most people get their shit together and supply a list of forbidden topics before the interview(s).
powerbottom 17th-Jun-2012 01:29 am (UTC)

sounds like Rusty had a pretty big overreaction. I can understand being sick of talking about your ex, but damn.
thishollywood 16th-Jun-2012 05:53 pm (UTC)
its just like, one of those things.... if you're a celebrity & u are dating or even marry a celebrity, you're probably going to be asked about it for a good-ass long time... ESPECIALLY if you end up breaking up or divorcing.
hpxstac 16th-Jun-2012 07:08 pm (UTC)
Graham made his mom cry. He hasn't had this reaction towards people asking about Katy prior to this instance. It seems like that was the reason he went off.
katranna 20th-Jun-2012 10:11 am (UTC)
He once prank-called an elderly actor to crow about how he had slept and then chucked that actor's grand-daughter. He prank-called him four times. And he broadcast the prank call.

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/celebritynews/3274807/Transcript-Russell-Brand-and-Jonathan-Ross-prank-call-to-Andrew-Sachs.html

So he really, really, doesn't get to take any sort of moral high ground here.
boomstick 16th-Jun-2012 07:11 pm (UTC)
I don't think it would've been so bad if his mom hadn't cried.
woollymammoth 16th-Jun-2012 05:23 pm (UTC)
He's not wrong. Norton should have consulted him about asking that question beforehand.
heartstopper 16th-Jun-2012 05:29 pm (UTC)
i think russell of all people should know that when things are preplanned or discussed, it loses the shock value and chance of a natural reaction.
woollymammoth 16th-Jun-2012 05:50 pm (UTC)
He does know and that's why I think he was so pissed, because he knew Norton was baiting him. This happened so long ago and to drudge it up just for shock value is tired and lame and I'm sure Russell is sick of it. And he has a right to be.
dreamdate 16th-Jun-2012 05:23 pm (UTC)
good for him tbh.

seems a little dramatic
dreamdate 16th-Jun-2012 05:28 pm (UTC)
id be interested to see how you'd react to being asked about your failed marriage/relationship over and over and over.
christoph 16th-Jun-2012 05:35 pm (UTC)
it's not the first time a celebrity has been repeatedly asked about an uncomfortable topic and it wont be the last. His rant just seemed a little excessive, thats all. it was a high profile marriage so im not surprised people are still asking about it. we dont even know what the question was but I doubt he meant any harm.

eta: nevermind, we do know what was said but i still dont think he was deliberately trying to upset russel.

isn't katy not asked about it? she seems to handle things better

fine with me as long as i get those millions too.
_otravez 16th-Jun-2012 06:08 pm (UTC)
I get asked constantly from coworkers, family and friends about my failed marriage. Constantly. If I was getting millions of dollars, I'd be much happier answering those questions because at least I could treat myself to some cool shit after having a shitty day of "How are you guys NOW? Are you speaking? Is everything OKAY? Are you OKAY?"

I can't really blame him. Everywhere he goes people bring it up. While it's one of the prices of fame, I'm sure it gets annoying and everyone has days where they just lose their shit for a minute.
