Cake Boss Buddy Valastro Insults Carmen Carrera and Trans community

On June 11th, 2012 - TLC aired an episode of their hit show "Cake Boss". The episode was named, "Bar Mitzvah, Beads & Oh Baby!" featuring special guest, Carmen Carrera.

Carmen is best known from the show "RuPaul's Drag Race" on Logo and has since become an activist for the Transgendered community (shortly announcing her transition after a special episode of "What Would You Do?" on ABC).

In the "What Would You Do" episode, Carmen speaks out about transgendered people and the struggles they encounter on a daily basis.

She is also appearing at the San Fransisco Pride Parade as the Grand Marshall due to her work as an activist for the LGBT community.

The plot of the episode was to use Carmen to lure one of the bakery's employees to flirt with her as a prank. Before filming, Carmen educated producers on what terms to use and what phrases would not be offensive, i.e. "Carmen was BORN male" or "Carmen is a transgendered woman". Producers AGREED to respect her wishes, however, when the show aired it was a blatant "THAT'S A MAN" moment - very reminiscent of (trashy) shows like Jerry Springer or Maury.

This is what Carmen said about the whole thing last night/this morning.

I cringed through the whole thing. Why would she even agree to do a show where she is basically the punchline?

I know This seems ~Teel Deer~ but it's in there 4 times what happened

It's Cake Boss, though. What was the thought process there?

I guess that's the initial impression... but idk, shouldn't you start to eradicate ignorance on an ignorant show watched by ignorant ppl? Like, if she sat down with them and figured out a way (scripted even, I mean might aswell) to shed light on how it wasn't an outrage to find her attractive then at least some percentage of ignoranious's would learn a new lesson... right?

I had the same reaction like "it was totally bait and switch!". But I re-read it and The plot of the episode was to use Carmen to lure one of the bakery's employees to flirt with her as a prank. isn't something I'd agree to if I wanted my image to be dignified t b h. I mean there is no way that would turn out okay even if they didn't make it extra crass.

I was under the impression that she was not told about the bait and switch. Why would she agree to a prank if it violates the very boundary is was putting in place?

Yeah, they probably explained it differently to her. She probably thought it would be something like WWYD, where there's a lesson to learn at the end.

mte just from that premise it's obvious it wouldn't have been handled sensitively...

She needs projects that will celebrate her intellect and take her seriously as a Transfigure rather than rely on her looks and garner attention from men.

I really hope she learns from this and understand the Media is not the transcommunities friend.

There in lies the catalyst for this whole friggin' mess. I love Carmen and this will be a good learning lesson for her. If she knew this going in there is no way any good could have come from this.

Did you read her notes, bb? It looks like she expected this to be a "Very Special Episode" learning-experience type of deal.
cricketgrl 12th-Jun-2012 05:25 pm (UTC)
But before she committed to this she should have expected some sort of negativity. I want her to be celebrated for who she is rather than what she is.

Or maybe I'm just expecting too much.

I mean, I'm sure she was prepared for the guy she was flirting with to be like "WHAT" prior to the "teaching moment" she clearly expected. Even with that expectation, though, I'm sure this far eclipsed anything she had prepared herself for.
medranochav 12th-Jun-2012 07:17 pm (UTC)
not only a prank but revenge...

dindin 12th-Jun-2012 10:44 pm (UTC)
That's what confuses me. What kind of "prank" couldn't include some kind of "haha she's a man" part?
