Listening Party! : Fiona Apple's 'The Idler Wheel...'

Fiona Apple's new album, out June 19, is titled The Idler Wheel Is Wiser Than the Driver of the Screw and Whipping Cords Will Serve You More Than Ropes Will Ever Do.

Emotions are so darn beautiful — that's the message of music, much of the time. The giggling lilt of a melody, the ennobling swell of a crescendo: Popular songs, especially, often enhance our moods to lift us up, unbreak our hearts, drive us toward liberating confessions and cathartic climaxes. Courting the sublime so aggressively that it often gets ridiculous, pop music encourages listeners to imagine feeling in ways that make us bigger, better.

Fiona Apple's music does something different. A classically lovely woman whose gorgeous, sultry alto once led her toward alt-divadom, Apple has always dared herself to be and do something else: to say no to simple beauty and instead express the urges and insecurities that more accommodating artists tend to avoid.

This has never been truer than on Apple's first album in seven years, whose typically hard-to-digest title is partly The Idler Wheel — the part in a system of gears (on phonographs and cassette players, among other extraordinary machines) that, seemingly passively, helps other parts move. The feelings Apple takes on in her deliberately maddening, eventually addictive new songs are those that inch us along, filling up most of our lives: icky little feelings like petty jealousy, self-doubt, bored loneliness and shamed regret. This is the stuff we'd rather tamp down. Apple wraps her fingers around it and makes it unavoidable.

seven years worth the waitCollapse )

I've already heard it bc of youtube, but I looooooove Anything We Want so much. It's also placed so well on the album. Regret is soul shattering, and Anything We Want is hopeful.
lovexemity 11th-Jun-2012 06:58 am (UTC)
Oh shit, "Regret" is the best thing I've heard in months.
7deadlysins7777 11th-Jun-2012 08:56 am (UTC)
MTE ...

But now I ran out of white dove feathers to soak up the hot piss that comes through your mouth, every time you address me. Leave me alone. Leave me alone.
yousaidlog 11th-Jun-2012 02:00 pm (UTC)
WERK. She's hands down my favorite songwriter.
roguewave3 11th-Jun-2012 06:59 am (UTC)
My computer keeps shutting off. :(

I'm one song away from Regret. You guys are getting me excited.
dottiehinkle 11th-Jun-2012 07:02 am (UTC)
I listened to half of the album but then had to leave to go see prometheus, going to listen to the rest again now. The first half was flawless imo. Also wtf was prometheus I'm really confused lol.
drkshdw 11th-Jun-2012 07:06 am (UTC)
i thought Prometheus was fucking amazing, but definitely flawed. i'm still debating if the writer intentionally made all the humans idiots (including the space jockeys/engineers) or if it was really lazy screenwriting (probably the latter, but i'm hoping not). either way, it was one of the most beautiful films i've seen in a while. the color pallet, costumes, sets, and art direction gave me LIFE.
dottiehinkle 11th-Jun-2012 07:10 am (UTC)
Yeah visually it was really good but the story confused me. I just read about it on the alien franchise wiki and after reading it makes more sense. I thought the thing that infected them was the same thing but I guess it wasn't they were just making a bunch of weird bioweapons, or at least thats how I understood it.

Ridley Scott's early career was in commercials and you can always tell. Unfortunately most of his films lose out on substance because he focuses on style. There's this amazing scene in Thelma & Louise with truck lights reflected in the rain and it's pure poetry. It's a pity he doesn't have the same eye for detail when it comes to characters and plots for his films.

I lost count of how many times I've listened to it.
papermint 11th-Jun-2012 07:04 am (UTC)
"Every single Night" Is LITERALLY MY LIFE. It's so much fun staying up until/randomly waking up at the crack of dawn due to THOUGHTS. GO AWAY. CUT IT OUT. I know that feel, Fiona. I know that feel.
roguewave3 11th-Jun-2012 07:06 am (UTC)
me too

After reading her Spin article I realized how much I relate to her.
shining_starsxx 11th-Jun-2012 01:33 pm (UTC)
I know right? My sleep schedule is so messed up because my brain will not.shut.down.
thekidwholived 11th-Jun-2012 07:06 am (UTC)
idk. this one will definitely have to grow on me. i don't hate it, but no stand outs other than anything we want yet. but i'm only on left alone so far
antique_faery 11th-Jun-2012 08:03 am (UTC)
That's what's drawing me in the most. It's what I love about it. I am not immediately in love with the songs, I am at first just intrigued. I keep thinking with each song, "Hmm.., interesting," but after the second listen I already like them a lot. I don't know how to really describe it. I have so many feels but can't articulate them all that well. Lol.
msgrottesca Totally OT11th-Jun-2012 07:07 am (UTC)
Yeah, totally OT other than I used to listen to her earlier albums after break ups but I just sent my boyfriend the "We need to talk." text annnnd I'm freaking out now. He'll wake up to it at like 6 am and we had plans but it's just. It's now or never.
papermint Re: Totally OT11th-Jun-2012 07:10 am (UTC)
I'm sorry >:. Breakups suck at both ends, but I'm sure you have your reasons.
msgrottesca Re: Totally OT11th-Jun-2012 07:11 am (UTC)
Oh yeah, he's ridic controlling and clingy. He calls my friends at like 12 am asking where I am because I didn't answer his texts. I'm actually kind of scared LOL D: I just feel bad because his grandpa died Tuesday and this week has been rough but being with him is basically. Killing me.
chrislola Re: Totally OT11th-Jun-2012 07:12 am (UTC)
God breaking up is the worst. I hate doing it. So much easier if they'd just realize themselves that it isn't working and say something about it.
klmnumbers Re: Totally OT11th-Jun-2012 07:14 am (UTC)
Break-ups suck =(
kamikashi Re: Totally OT11th-Jun-2012 08:01 am (UTC)
aww my best friend just broke up with her bf today :/ and then shes now taking the graveyard shift at forever 21 basically right after it all. i dont even get what you do late night at f21.

i also rejected this random guy today even though its his bday. its his fault for asking me out on his bday. tried to pick me up at trader joes and then found me on facebook when i only gave him my first name. plus, when going through his facebook i think he has an asian fetish. ick.

i hope my part made you laugh lol.
dottiehinkle 11th-Jun-2012 07:22 am (UTC)
Not feeling hot knife, periphery, or regret. Everything else is flawless imo. Hot knife is really bad though imo.
lovexemity 11th-Jun-2012 07:28 am (UTC)
Ugh, finished and now I can't wait to buy the album...with actual money. I'll leave ya'll with two of my favs.

Thanks, Op!

I love Hot Knife! I love when Fiona gets jazzy. I really like the swing feel. I've always loved Maude's voice.
