Ex-Fleetwood Mac Member Commits Suicide


A former member of the iconic rock band Fleetwood Mac was found dead at his Nashville home today after shooting himself -- this according to Nashville Police.

66-year-old Bob Welch's body was found by his wife around noon. According to police, Bob shot himself in the chest.

Police say Welch -- who had health issues recently -- left a suicide note.

Welch was a guitarist and vocalist for Fleetwood Mac from 1971 to 1974. He formed the British rock group Paris in 1976, and had hits including "Sentimental Lady" and "Ebony Eyes."

Can any journalism major tell me if it's acceptable to announce that someone committed suicide in the US? Here in Brazil, we can't do that

it's acceptable, I guess. as long as it's a tasteful piece. I mean, they usually don't talk about everyday people unless it's shocking but celebrities they usually do pieces on them.

Really? That's so interesting. If someone extremely high-profile committed suicide, would Brazilian news coverage be all "X passed away at their house on Saturday. Authorities say there are no suspicious circumstances", then?

It's pretty much acceptable. The journalists just make sure it's a tastefully done announcement.

Well, this post is doing just that isn't it? Just as long as it's tasteful and you don't know it before the family has time to find out, although, those aren't requirement you can do it however you like, but tasteful is usually your best bet.

I study journalism in the States, and I've noticed that mentioning suicide is perfectly fine in the media. I'm from Finland and it's only ever implied there. Weird.
