Zooey Deschanel: 'I've always felt like an outsider'

Zooey Deschanel has said that she still feels like an outsider when she goes to glamorous events. The actress told Cosmopolitan that she does not mind feeling apart from her surroundings in the industry.

"I've always felt like an outsider and I still do when I go to fancy events. I still sit there and think, 'I don't belong here'," Deschanel said. "I feel like a kid at the adults' table - like I'm an outsider who got let inside somehow. It's not a bad thing, it's just that I see everything differently. I take all the glitz and glamour of this business with a large grain of salt. I feel very removed from it. Not in a bad way - it's cool - I just don't feel a part of it."

Of being at awards shows, she continued: "I just think you go to something like the Golden Globes, and it's the most glamorous place you could ever be, but then you go home and you're still like, 'Urgh, this dress is too tight, I wanna take off these shoes and put on my pyjamas'.

"At the end of the night all the glamour goes away and you're just a human. All of that stuff is put on, to a degree. It's always comforting to know that, no matter what, at the end of the night I'm always home in my pyjamas."

Deschanel added: "I'm not shy. I have a strange sort of combination of awkwardness and confidence. I'm actually okay with awkward moments. But it's not because I think I'm so great. I'm confident in things other than, like, my 'swagger'. I'm confident in my sense of humor. I'm comfortable in my skin."

The full interview appears in the July issue of British Cosmopolitan, on sale June 7.

i'd rather hear about "there's more to life than pleasing men", cos that's pretty shocking for a cosmo tag line
electrosion 3rd-Jun-2012 09:46 pm (UTC)
i can't believe they have a 'letter to my rapist' section.
hawaii_bombay 3rd-Jun-2012 09:50 pm (UTC)
What...
trixx_r4_kidz 3rd-Jun-2012 09:53 pm (UTC)
ive heard of this becoming increasingly more common. it made a segment on my local news, but the woman actually read it it to her rapist. it seemed really empowering for her, so *shrug*
beating_heartss 3rd-Jun-2012 09:55 pm (UTC)
idk makes sense to me, sometimes you gotta write shit out to help you get through it. Publishing is a bit weird but it may help other people

ectypes 3rd-Jun-2012 10:07 pm (UTC)
really? that just made me go "no shit sherlock"... it's pathetic that that's what's shocking on a magazine. ughhhhhhhhhhhhh. no offense to you. more to the point that this magazine is disgusting.
georgie_georgie 3rd-Jun-2012 10:23 pm (UTC)
it's the smallest font too.
xalittlebitshy 3rd-Jun-2012 10:52 pm (UTC)
Knowing it's Comso, I bet the "there's more to life than pleasing men" is about going to the gym and getting our hair done or something.
xpretty_vacant 4th-Jun-2012 12:27 am (UTC)
hah - Cosmo's probably run out of different ways to manipulate women by way of sex..

The obvious next step is to completely rattle their brains by telling them
they actually ARE more than sexual objects.

Oh wait, scrolling back up I see it's a quote from the anti-sex herself, Zooey Deschanel.
Not the magazine. Neverminddddd.

Wtf at that "letter to my rapist" headline though.. Can they not?
agatharuncible 4th-Jun-2012 03:30 am (UTC)
I'm more interested in reading about the groom cheating with the bride's mum tbh
sheriffgraham 3rd-Jun-2012 09:46 pm (UTC)
she looks really qt on the cover
yourmoodswings 3rd-Jun-2012 09:46 pm (UTC)

I had never thought that Lizzy Caplan is a Zooey wannabe, and now this is all I'm ever going to think about when I see her.
browniecakemix 3rd-Jun-2012 10:55 pm (UTC)
SHE IS NOT TAKE THAT BACK

Okay.
redlipped 3rd-Jun-2012 09:47 pm (UTC)
I want to love her so badly, but I CANNOT GET OVER how HARD she tries to be quirky & awkward. And it doesn't help that that's all she ever talks about.
so_chic_doll 3rd-Jun-2012 09:49 pm (UTC)
People have so many feelings about this & always pull the "she tries SO HARD" card, but she's really always been this way.

What's it to you anyway?
kimberwyn 4th-Jun-2012 12:39 am (UTC)
IA honestly.
antique_faery 4th-Jun-2012 01:51 am (UTC)
People try to perfect a certain persona their entire lives, though.
roseofjuly 5th-Jun-2012 12:56 am (UTC)
If she has, why does she keep saying that she is instead of just doing a normal interview and talking about her life and events? I swear every interview she does is a repeat of "OMG I'm so indie and quirky and different!" instead of actually talking about herself and demonstrating that she actually IS different. And then some of the things she says don't sound so different anyway. There are a lot of people who feel like an outsider at fancy parties even when they are part of the crowd.
zemi_chan 5th-Jun-2012 01:06 am (UTC)
ia.
anniemann101 3rd-Jun-2012 10:41 pm (UTC)
she ain't trying too hard. i myself believe that she is quirky and awkward but everyone around her (management, her PR team, whatever) are clinging onto her having that image for dear life.

it's those traits being picked out of her all the time that just does not come off as real. one dimensional characteristics is not realistic. that's why people are yawning to her always saying she's quirky and awkward. even if she mentions it once in a 3 hour long interview. it's not genuine when you always have to prove it, is all.
hypnology 3rd-Jun-2012 11:16 pm (UTC)
I feel like she always talks about being a nerd but nothing really makes her a nerd. Like like star wars - i know way more people that like it than don't, so liking it isn't nerdy
roseofjuly 5th-Jun-2012 12:54 am (UTC)
I don't want to love her but I am still annoyed that in every interview she does, no matter how mainstream or well-loved she is, all she talks about is feeling quirky and indie and like an outsider.
so_chic_doll 3rd-Jun-2012 09:47 pm (UTC)
I don't care for fancy events & parties either.
warsawed 3rd-Jun-2012 09:47 pm (UTC)
I can't @ the contradictions on this cover. Zooey's 'there's more to life than pleasing men' and the letter to a rapist thing, alongside finding the OMG!!PERFECT BIKINI, sex olympics + fatty alertz, its too much.
jinnycalderone 3rd-Jun-2012 10:45 pm (UTC)
ugh, this. its disturbing tbqh..............................
forgethissmile 3rd-Jun-2012 10:51 pm (UTC)
Seriously. No wonder we're all messed up.
anniemann101 3rd-Jun-2012 11:09 pm (UTC)
all of this. i used to collect magazines but the advertising the way they position things and everything is a complete shock to mentality. modern society is effed up.
oh_luna 4th-Jun-2012 07:13 am (UTC)
society is fucked up full stop.
flawed_x_design 4th-Jun-2012 07:47 am (UTC)
I made this exact point in the previous magazine post we had. Its really fucked up tbQh.
aquanite 3rd-Jun-2012 09:47 pm (UTC)

"Cosmo Makes Sex An Olympic Sport"? Sounds like the man gets a gold medal while the woman gets a sore vagina.

I just imagine Kathy Bates saying that.
