Kathie Lee Gifford apologizes to wrong Martin Short on Twitter

Kathie Lee Gifford has tweeted an apology to Martin Short after asking the actor about his dead wife on Wednesday’s Today show.

Short’s wife, Nancy, passed away in 2010 from ovarian cancer, but Gifford clearly failed to conduct proper research when she said to the actor, “[You] and Nancy have one of the greatest marriages of anybody in showbusiness. How many years now for you guys?”

The actor kept his cool without correcting Gifford, answering, “We … married 36 years.”

To add salt to the wound, Gifford pressed on, asking further questions: “But you’re still, like, in love?” to which Short replied, “Madly in love.”

“Why?” Gifford then asked.

“Cute. I’m cute,” Short answered.

The actor later corrected Gifford during a commercial break and she took to Twitter to apologize.

“I send my sincerest apologies to @MartinShort and his family. He handled situation w/enormous grace and kindness and I’m so grateful,” she tweeted.

But in yet another fact-checking blunder for the TV host, @MartinShort is not the actor’s actual Twitter handle.

While the Internet is still abuzz about the mistake Kathie Lee Gifford made on Wednesday's Today show when she asked Martin Short about his wife, who died in 2010 of ovarian cancer, the gracious star has clearly accepted her apology.

"I think that it's live television and people make mistakes and there's no ill will intended," Short exclusively told E! News about Gifford's gaffe while doing press for his latest film, Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted. "And I think it's nice to aspire to be that way."
