Mechs and giant monsters?! Pacific Rim may be awesome

Photobucket

The official synopsis for Guillermo del Toro's upcoming Pacific Rim has just been released, and we're throwing the gauntlet down right now: This already sounds like it could be the most colossal sci-fi blockbuster of 2013.

Very little has been said so far about the movie, except that it has something to do with the nations of the Earth joining forces to combat a monstrous planetary menace. Well, now Marketsaw has gotten hold of the official plotline for the film. So take a look at this:

When legions of monstrous creatures, known as Kaiju, started rising from the sea, a war began that would take millions of lives and consume humanity's resources for years on end. To combat the giant Kaiju, a special type of weapon was devised: massive robots, called Jaegers, which are controlled simultaneously by two pilots whose minds are locked in a neural bridge. But even the Jaegers are proving nearly defenseless in the face of the relentless Kaiju. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes—a washed-up former pilot (Charlie Hunnam) and an untested trainee (Rinko Kikuchi)—who are teamed to drive a legendary but seemingly obsolete Jaeger from the past. Together, they stand as mankind's last hope against the mounting apocalypse.

We have heard that Pacific Rim is Del Toro's love letter to the Japanese kaiju genre, and that apparently is correct, since his adversaries are actually called by that name. This sounds, however, like it takes the genre to a whole new level, and we have no doubt that Del Toro is mapping out some of the most spectacular giant-monster-vs.-giant-robot battles ever seen.

A first look at the film—which is likely to be in 3D—is almost a certainty to take place at this summer's San Diego Comic-Con. Del Toro is a regular there, and he probably can't wait to show off his first film in five years to an appreciative Hall H audience.

Also in the cast are Charlie Day (It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia), Idris Elba (Prometheus) and Del Toro regular Ron Perlman (Hellboy). The battle begins on July 12, 2013—are you looking forward to it?

I don't give a shit about that stuff. I want to know what happens, PERSONALLY, to the main character.
oohasparklie 25th-May-2012 05:30 pm (UTC)
This is how I feel about it. I don't care about robots. I care about characters. (Which is why I loved s2 of The Walking Dead when everyone else hated it, I think.)

Hmm...sounds like Godzilla plus Five Star Stories tbh.
oohasparklie 25th-May-2012 05:29 pm (UTC)
The only thing that sounds interesting about this is Charlie Hunnam.

I'm not much of a Del Toro fan though. Or robots.
