Phillip Phillips Had 8 Surgeries During Idol & Needs Kidneys Restructured. Let's Cut WGWG Some Slack

Imagine what Phillip Phillips could do if he were 100 percent healthy.

The American Idol winner dazzled viewers all season long, despite battling chronic kidney problems – and having eight separate surgeries – since the competition began, his father told PEOPLE Wednesday after an eventful finale.

"He's been doing [well], but it's just grueling hours and it's just amazing what he's done through the journey," said the singer's dad, also named Phillip Phillips, at the show's official Ford-sponsored after party. "Eight operations since we started American Idol ... He's hitting 50 percent, but he's still up there swinging away."

Adding, "I was so proud I could cry" over his son's win, the elder Phillips also said, "They've just seen a glimpse of what Phillip can do. We can't wait to get him well and 100 percent and really see how he can perform."

The younger Phillips, 21, suffered with a build up of kidney stones and underwent multiple operations to remove them. In the next few weeks, after another surgery to reconstruct his kidneys,
he is expected to make a full recovery in time for the Idols Live tour.

"The recovery's probably two to four weeks," said his father. "He's healthy, he's good. His kidneys are good. I can't wait for America and the whole world to see him [after his surgery], because he's a big cut-up. He's going to have some fun."

The singer himself told reporters Wednesday that the problems were a struggle but that he had the support to get through them.

"I'm going to get some surgery done, so I'm going to get all better for the tour," he said. "It was very tough [getting through the season]. I had great doctors and great people surrounding me [who] really helped out, so it's just a blessing to be here."

I was in the emergency waiting room with a man passing a kidney stone once and it seemed liked it was the most unimaginable pain.

I don't know who this guy is really but I wish him a speedy recovery.
anus 24th-May-2012 06:59 pm (UTC)
Oh god my dad has had kidney stones multiple times. I never want to experience that. D:
sitakhet 24th-May-2012 07:04 pm (UTC)
Someone in my friend's family had kidney stones (can't remember if it was her mom or her aunt or whatever) and she said it was worth than labor.
wits 24th-May-2012 07:08 pm (UTC)
IT'S THE WORST OMG. even worse for dudes because it takes, ahem, longer for them to pass it
luvthatdrtywata 24th-May-2012 07:12 pm (UTC)
i THINK i had them once. i had just started a job and all of a sudden started getting the most excruciating pain ever in my kidney area. because i had just started my insurance hadn't kicked in and for over 3 months i lived with it. i couldn't see straight, sometimes i could stand up, i threw up all the time. and had all the other symptoms but i had no idea what it was at the time. i don't know what was going through my head that i didn't just go to the hospital. right before my insurance kicked in at 3 month it stopped but my god. as someone with chronic stomach issues, even a severe stomach ache is NOTHING after that.
saltireflower 24th-May-2012 07:15 pm (UTC)
Oh man, I can't even describe the pain. When I didn't know what it was, I actually thought it was going to kill me.
the_landlady 24th-May-2012 07:23 pm (UTC)
My dad had a kidney stone a few years ago and it was the only time I've ever heard him curse. The triage nurse was asking him intake questions and he was like, "just read my fucking drivers license and give me some fucking pain meds!"
succexey 24th-May-2012 07:24 pm (UTC)
stupid question ik, but what makes passing a kidney stone so painful?
foryoursake08 24th-May-2012 07:27 pm (UTC)
iirc, it's cause if it gets to a certain size it'll get stuck.
expromqueen 24th-May-2012 07:36 pm (UTC)
i think it's like peeing out a rock but that's just an uneducated guess i have
runfromtears 25th-May-2012 01:55 am (UTC)
They're can be jagged, which hurts like fucking hell. And also, it's like trying to pass something the size of a watermelon thru the size of a straw. Been there with kidney stones. They say it's worse than labor. If that's the case, labor will be a walk in the park!
backincharge 24th-May-2012 07:56 pm (UTC)
omg, I don't even want to imagine.
squalor 24th-May-2012 08:49 pm (UTC)

It is horrible pain. I can't really describe it. I've dealt with Crohn's Disease and I honestly don't know which pain is worse.

I've had them twice and both times I was wishing for sweet sweet death. Hurts like a mofo. Wish the AI guy the best.

latexana 24th-May-2012 07:02 pm (UTC)
I had a bad infection that hit my kidneys last year and holy fuck, by far the worst pain I ever felt. I couldnt even stand, or stay laying down. at one point I was throwing up from pain.

I cant imagine having kidney stones and having to go through idol, props to Philip.
snuffyqui45 24th-May-2012 07:07 pm (UTC)
Oh God, I had an infection there and it was the worst fucking thing ever.

The hospital trip was awful and I could only tolerate orange soda and popsicles. I dropped a good 40 lbs in 4 days.
