Gabrielle Union is Serious About Skincare and Water

Gabrielle Union doesn't "mess around" when it comes to her skincare.

The actress is an avid user of sunscreen - especially when she's partaking in outdoor exercise. Gabrielle doesn't care for sun worshipping, and prefers to cover up under the harsh rays.

"I don't tan on purpose, but I do a lot of beach workouts. But I go SPF 110," she laughed to People. "I don't mess around."

Gabrielle has been a brand spokeswoman for Neutrogena since 2004 and is currently promoting their new Choose Skin Health campaign, which aims to fight skin cancer. One in five Americans will develop skin cancer in their lifetime, and the 39-year-old star doesn't want to become a statistic.

"As an African-American woman, culturally we have been told that we have natural protection against the sun - but we're absolutely part of the one in five," she explained. "As I've gotten older, I've seen relatives' moles change shape, and they think, 'That's cute - it's like Janet Jackson!' But it's not cute - it's called melanoma."

Gabrielle says her daily skincare regime is "painfully simple". The stunning star prefers to sport a natural beauty look in the day.

"I use a grapefruit cleanser because it smells good and it's got salicylic acid. If I'm having a breakout I'll use something that's acne specific, but usually it's always my clear pore astringent and my trusty sunblock," she said.

"I pop on some lip gloss and mascara and I keep it moving."

The actress regularly travels, and spends a lot of her time in hot climates. Gabrielle ensures she stays on top of her hygiene when she's jet setting.

"Water, I travel with, if I am able to - I can't take it on the plane. Also lip balm, for winter and summer because people sometimes think that when you're dehydrated a lot of sunburns can happen on your lips - lip gloss over chapped lips looks like lip gloss over chapped lips and lip stick over chapped lips is just awful," she told Beauty High.

"Oh, and mascara is a must - and deodorant! It's in my purse, I don't mess around. I'm always in a hot climate and I'm like, 'What stinks?! It's me.' No funky monkey. So now I keep deodorant in my bag."

Gabrielle has garnered a host of great beauty tips from working in the glamorous entertainment industry. However, the 39-year-old star says the simplest of secrets are often the best.

"The biggest and most inexpensive that anyone can do is water. I try to drink a gallon a day. And it's made a huge difference in my hair, skin and nails, it grows! I generally don't have major skin flare-ups because I'm so hydrated, but my hair is growing, my nails are growing, my skin is staying clear and it helps with my weight loss," she said.

"Just substituting little things out of your diet like soda, juice, any sort of sugary drink - there's no need to have flavor water when you can have regular water - just throw a little lemon in there if you want to look fancy. But that's been the best and easiest secret."

thadine and gabrielle welcome you to this beauty post...

me too, not because I drink other drinks...I just don't drink a lot in general
heart_iswild 20th-May-2012 11:16 pm (UTC)
EXACTLY. i am literally never thirsty and when i am, it's when i'm eating. and i hate water.........so my skin has lots of reasons to suck tbh
genbu_no_miko24 20th-May-2012 11:17 pm (UTC)
same :(
berry_wish 20th-May-2012 11:28 pm (UTC)
I go through phases. I'll be really good and then forget to drink anything for like a week. Ironically, I was the best at being hydrated when I worked at a summer camp. Since we were outside all day they set up water stations everywhere, and I was able to remember to drink/refill my water bottle before heading to the next activity.
eucatastrophe 22nd-May-2012 03:02 am (UTC)
I always drink two glasses of water with every meal, it means that even if I somehow forget to drink over the day I've had at least 6 glasses (which is still not enough but at least it's a decent amount of hydration happening).
dracopet 20th-May-2012 11:26 pm (UTC)
I'm not terrible, I have between 30 and 60 ounces a day
hrhobo 20th-May-2012 11:29 pm (UTC)
idk. i need one of those hats so i can drink all the time.
sashafarce 21st-May-2012 12:06 am (UTC)
it just tastes SO VILE to me. I got a Brita in hopes of remedying this, started drinking bottled... and no, it just leaves this awful taste in my mouth. It's me, not the water.

she is so gorg. I just could just stare at her.
claudieko 21st-May-2012 02:15 am (UTC)
I hate drinking water because I have to get up to the bathroom every 2 hours and I'm always either busy or lazy.
u_belong_to_me 21st-May-2012 02:46 am (UTC)
I'm the opposite. I'm certain I drink way too much water. It's pretty much the only thing I drink aside from the occasional cup of tea or coffee.
liddlebins 21st-May-2012 05:57 am (UTC)
these last few weeks with moving and finals, my water intake has gone out the window

now that i'm a college graduate, though :) back on the water train
chksguitarlicks 21st-May-2012 09:28 pm (UTC)
i'm making it a goal to drink a glass of water every hour and a half...if anything every 2 hours ... or with every meal ... it is hard..I caught myself when I decided to do a food journal and OMG I was drinking as little as 1 and half cups of water every day...the most was maybe 3 and thats because I tried lol ... it was soo lame. I decided to take make the best effort and stand up and go get the water even a bottled water is helpful by your side. So far I've been able to go to 5 glasses a day and I do feel different. I feel way more hydrated and energetic.

I will try to do 8 glasses tomorrow LOL

A GALLON of water a day though?! I wouldn't have time to do anything but run to the toilet all day if I did that

I drink about 3 liters a day and it's not that bad! I think my body has gotten used to it
expromqueen 20th-May-2012 11:14 pm (UTC)
i bet ur bladder would get stronger tho and then u'd have super peeing powers

The more often you go to the toilet, the better it is for your health! (when it's not due to a sickness of course :)
numbedtoe 20th-May-2012 11:46 pm (UTC)
idk it's funny I had to measure how much I drank over the course of 3 days for some bullshit the doctor wanted, and when you start to convert it, it's really easy to drink a gallon or more a day. at least it is for me. which shocked me.
ludagurl3d 20th-May-2012 11:47 pm (UTC)
yeah i call b.s.

i drink whenever i get thirsty and that's no where near a gallon a day. shit, i'm a small person, i don't need that much damn water. plus i have class and clinicals that last 8hrs a day. i do not need to be pissing 24/7
angelmonster 20th-May-2012 11:52 pm (UTC)
I drink a gallon a day, some of it is water as green tea. It isn't that hard if you put it into your routine. It helps with a lot of aches and little things you think you have from exertion and stress. For me it did atleast.
deargirl 21st-May-2012 12:32 am (UTC)
that was me at first but then my body got more accustomed to the increased water intake maybe? because i am still drinking a lot of water every day (maybe not a gallon, i dont really measure, i just make sure i drink a glass or two every time i go in the kitchen or in the bathroom), and I don't have to go every 20 minutes anymore like when i first started to change my water intake
nyse 21st-May-2012 01:25 am (UTC)
I drink a half gallon (which equal to about 4 bottles of water), and if I'm outside in the heat for long periods of time, I might drink six, but it's not too hard. I would first try to drink at least a 16oz glass or bottle of water with each meal and then gradually increase from there.
misscrystal 21st-May-2012 01:48 am (UTC)
It really does. I lift weights and it's important to drink a lot of water for muscle growth and repair. I literally pee every 30 minutes.
saintmorse 21st-May-2012 01:53 am (UTC)
I drink about a gallon of seltzer a day. I do pee a lot, but I'm thirsty all the time, so what can you do?
anniemann101 21st-May-2012 01:55 am (UTC)
this. you'll feel like a 74 year old woman with bladder problems.
_marquis 21st-May-2012 02:03 am (UTC)
i have far too tiny a bladder for that.
ectypes 21st-May-2012 02:06 am (UTC)
it flushes out all your electrolytes though. my brother drinks about a gallon a day, maybe more, and he just passed out in the gym the other week because he was so nutrient deficient.
lauren_1021 21st-May-2012 03:57 am (UTC)
I drink a gallon. I bought one of those big gallon jugs of water at the store, and each night I clean it out and refill it. I try to always have a glass of water (poured from it) at my side. I'm usually surprised when it's midday and all my water is gone.
fwee_prower 22nd-May-2012 02:21 am (UTC)
i used to do that. I have a tiny bladder so i was in the bathroom like every hour and as soon as i got home from work i had to take a nap.
cricketgrl 22nd-May-2012 03:48 am (UTC)
I believe a gallon is way too much.

Isn't that a lot of strain on your kidneys? Water is great but I'm always cautious about screwing up my renal system.
drownanddive 22nd-May-2012 01:43 pm (UTC)
I probably drink about 3/4 a gallon a day. It feels good to me, though. If I don't drink that much I feel dehydrated.
jeveuxmacaron 20th-May-2012 10:57 pm (UTC)
jfc that is 16 cups of water a day
anus 20th-May-2012 10:58 pm (UTC)
I'm just not thirsty enough to consume that much water my gosh
jeveuxmacaron 20th-May-2012 10:59 pm (UTC)
seriously i would probably go through a roll of toilet paper a day with how much i would have to pee if i drank that much
xliquidskiesx 20th-May-2012 11:00 pm (UTC)
You should drink before you get ~thirsty~ though. but yeah 16cups is a little much :X
hershelwalker 20th-May-2012 11:04 pm (UTC)
most people don't know that you shouldn't EVER feel "thirsty". that means you're dehydrated. you should drink BEFORE you get thirsty.
fuckyess 20th-May-2012 11:05 pm (UTC)
if you just always have a bottle of water with you, you'd be surprised at how much you drink it just because it's there.
captchasucks 22nd-May-2012 06:17 am (UTC)
i'd need to be eating a shit ton of hot cheetos to drink that much water
loveackshuly 21st-May-2012 12:00 am (UTC)
I drink a lot of water and that's crazy to me.
yolleh 21st-May-2012 11:07 am (UTC)
Lol I don't even get through that in a month
chihaya19 20th-May-2012 10:57 pm (UTC)
i thought anything over like spf 50 is pointless....
juunanagou18 20th-May-2012 10:59 pm (UTC)
I believe it. My friend wears SPF 90 and still manages to burn if she doesn't apply it every hour.
jeveuxmacaron 20th-May-2012 11:00 pm (UTC)
it depends on ppd (the uva protection). a lot of us sunscreens don't have very good ppd.
ericasays 20th-May-2012 11:02 pm (UTC)
it's true, anything over 30 spf works the same as 30. 110 spf = 30 spf
sevenbeat 20th-May-2012 11:02 pm (UTC)
it is.
fuckyess 20th-May-2012 11:06 pm (UTC)
i think uv protection wise it is, but the higher ones help you not get tan? maybe. i could be bullshitting but it sounds good.
expromqueen 20th-May-2012 11:16 pm (UTC)
every science major i knew in college was adamant enough about this, i believe it haha
callme_morbid 20th-May-2012 11:54 pm (UTC)
ikr? as long as it's over spf 15 and under 50, it should work.
jenniesbottle 21st-May-2012 12:17 am (UTC)
doesn't the number refer to how long it lasts? I didn't think it referred to the strength of protection.
myblackass 21st-May-2012 01:18 am (UTC)
I have a friend that wear 100. It comes out of the tube like toothpaste.
beforeskylines 21st-May-2012 03:29 am (UTC)
I wore 90 to a festival this weekend that was water/sweat proof and I didn't tan at ALL despite literally being in the sun all day. It was amazing, totally flipped my belief in the over 50 myth.
bibbysbaby 21st-May-2012 05:16 am (UTC)
for my middle school science fair my group tested the theory and it was true. for spf over 50, it was the same, and of the brands we tested Banana Boat was the best. granted I did this like 12 years ago, but we came in 2nd :)
totalroyalty 21st-May-2012 08:22 am (UTC)
it's true. it does help a BIT more but it's a lot of excess chemicals and it ends up being bad for your skin in a different way.

the consistency is also like peanut butter, iccck!!! I rather use something that smells delicious that'll make me wanna apply often. I like Ocean Potion because it smells like cream cycles <3
putyohandsonme 20th-May-2012 10:57 pm (UTC)

no shame~
sky_ablaze 21st-May-2012 01:58 am (UTC)
lol do what you wanna do girl!

i'm proud of myself because i haven't had soda (besides the occasional sip) since january. i feel like i've had less breakouts and don't get bloated as much. i've tried to tell my friends to give it up, but i don't want to be preachy haha plus they're adults and can make their own decisions
juunanagou18 20th-May-2012 10:58 pm (UTC)
I love my current moisturizer but I wish it had SPF in it like my old ones did, but they always had this weird grainy texture to them...
rubyboots 20th-May-2012 11:01 pm (UTC)
Same, I'm really happy with my current daytime Avene moisturiser but I know I'm going to have to end up changing it because I want one with SPF :(
jeveuxmacaron 20th-May-2012 11:02 pm (UTC)
the avene hydrance optimal comes in spf 20, that's what i use
aubade_saudade 20th-May-2012 11:03 pm (UTC)
i use the olay 3-in-one but it only has SPF 15
unclecraig 20th-May-2012 11:03 pm (UTC)
I use Oil of Olay with spf 15 and there's nothing grainy about it.
yummyhead2toe 20th-May-2012 11:03 pm (UTC)
I break out if I use a moisturizer with SPF in it.
fuckyess 20th-May-2012 11:08 pm (UTC)
i don't even use a reg. moisturizer during the day if i'm going outside at all. i just use an spf that's meant for the face, non pore clogging and stuff.

neutrogena makes a nice one, it's called "dry touch" or something (i have the walgreens version tbh it's just as good). it goes on like moisturizer and feels nice on the skin.

the important thing to remember is put on spf BEFORE anything else, not after.
fuckyess 20th-May-2012 11:09 pm (UTC)
oh and i use a reg sunscreen rather than a moisturizer because the highest i've found is like 15 and that's not enough for me

i think cetaphil makes a 50, actually, but it's aspensive
bluepassiflora 20th-May-2012 11:10 pm (UTC)
Find a moisturizing sunscreen. For something available in the US, La Roche-Posay Anthelios SX Daily Moisturizing Cream SPF15 is moisturizing and has a good PPD rating.
killmyunicorn 21st-May-2012 03:14 am (UTC)
bb cream!
simply_inn0cent 21st-May-2012 08:24 pm (UTC)
Eucerin has one that has pink on the bottle for sensitive skin. I believe it comes in SPF 15 and 30. It's pretty nice and doesn't leave a greasy film.

I have a Clarisonic Mia and just use a gel Avene cleanser with it but I don't think it really matters which type you use, really? As long as it's not too thick, so the brush head can move easily across your skin.
