Study: females dramatically underrepresented in top 2011 films (and the Pope is Catholic, too!)

Females were “dramatically under-represented” in the United States’ top 100 grossing films last year, accounting for 33% of all characters at a time when they made up nearly 51% of the U.S. population, according to a study being released Tuesday.

The 33% figure represented an increase over the findings of a similar study in 2002, when females comprised 28% of the movie characters, said the report from the Center for the Study of Women in Television and Film at San Diego State University.

But while there were more female characters overall, fewer of them were “clearly identifiable protagonists,” the study found -- 11% in 2011 versus 16% in 2002. “Thus, while there are more female characters on screen today, fewer stories are told from a female character’s perspective,” according to Martha Lauzen, executive director of the center.

Her title for the report: "It's a Man's (Celluloid) World."

The report mirrored a study of women's behind-the-scenes participation that the center released in January, which found that women made up 18% of all directors, producers, writers, cinematographers and editors working on the 250 highest-grossing movies last year. That was only one percentage point higher than when the center began studying employment figures in 1998.

Lauzen’s latest report said that, on average, female characters in last year’s films were younger than the male characters, less likely to be portrayed as leaders and more likely to be identified by their marital status. It said that 73% of the female characters were Caucasian, 8% African American, 5% Latina and 5% Asian (with the rest in smaller categories, including aliens and animals).

Source, and the original study (thanks to sunoftheskye @ ontd_political!)

Honestly, this doesn't surprise me. The fact that the Bechdel test even exists - and is frequently failed - is depressing enough, imo.

ONTD, what are some of your favorite movies with strong (not necessarily action hero!) female characters? Hell, might as well throw in some book recommendations, too.

I acknowledge all it's flaws, but I like Sucker Punch for what it could have been and all the actresses. I see so much subtext when I watch it that I'm pretty much waiting a different movie lol.

I love sucker punch.
And maybe I'm just desensitized but I didn't think it was too male-gazey besides maybe a few pany shot scenes in the first ~dream sequence.

enid_keaner 16th-May-2012 02:04 am (UTC)
At this point? Both.

LBR here, most of those films that have female protagonists aren't quality either.

Hollywood is failing at both quality and quantity.

One would assume that the more quantity there was, the higher the chances of getting quality there would be.

But imo I just want to see more women doing stuff. None of the male characters in the Avengers where deep or incredibly complex, but you got to see a wide variety that just does not exist for female roles.
boss_sister 16th-May-2012 02:17 am (UTC)
Both. But in behind the scenes, including post-work, definitely quantity. Anyone working at that level in post is going to be talented. At this point, it's just a numbers game.
ladyserenity84 17th-May-2012 03:10 am (UTC)
Definitely both.
enid_keaner 16th-May-2012 02:02 am (UTC)
I mean, are we shocked by this fuckery?

I feel that I will never break into this business because everything I write has a female protagonist and I won't apologize for that.

phantom_chini 16th-May-2012 02:04 am (UTC)
ONTD should create its own production company as well as a publishing company. It'd be amazing.

katie_g_lynn 16th-May-2012 02:21 am (UTC)
LMAO I once had a prof give me shit for always writing from a female perspective. He called me out in class and basically implied that I did that because I didn't have the talent or experience to write from a male perspective. I was like "Uh no that's just what I like to write, and btw all of the men in this class have only written from male perspectives, and I don't see you criticizing them." He also graded my story down because it didn't have any likable male characters and he accused me of misandry lol. My story just wasn't about men.
burningpumpkins 16th-May-2012 04:04 am (UTC)
Don't ever. Most if not all of my film/book selections feature strong female protagonists; I will refuse to read anything I deem sexist (ie. Game of Thrones)... and I set a pretty high bar with films, otherwise, my friends' shitty dude-bro/chick-flick shitty film nights will suffer my constant and sneering criticism throughout.

So far, I enjoyed the hell out of Battlestar Galactica and Nikita... however, it was still not up to my standards due to racial inequality and slight gender inequality... but, miles above most television.

I am learning so much new information today. First people who are decapitated are killed, instant buildings appear right before your eyes, and now this!

All snark aside, I've only gone to the theater twice this year - do any more moviegoing ONTDers think that more women are in prominent roles this year?
ms_mmelissa 16th-May-2012 02:05 am (UTC)
I think you just have to pick your battles and go support female fronted stuff.
demonsandsongs 16th-May-2012 02:29 am (UTC)
I've decided I'm only paying money from now on for films that have strong female characters in them. This summer I'm going to see Brave, Prometheus, and (even though I don't like any of the actresses involved) Snow White and The Huntsman.
sandstorm 16th-May-2012 02:32 am (UTC)
Same here, as well as POC in substantial roles. Except, only Brave and probably Prometheus.

Sadly, I think that wipes out Rise of The Guardians, but oh well.
muzicnem 16th-May-2012 02:52 am (UTC)
I seriously embarrass myself by tearing up every time I see a Brave trailer, it's ridiculous.
r_a_black 16th-May-2012 04:06 am (UTC)
You know what, I'm going to do this too. I mean fuck, I have so little money for the movies as it is, may as well really make it worth the cost.
manaconda 16th-May-2012 02:04 am (UTC)
not surprising at all.

to answer your question, i really like death proof. i would love it a lot more if it weren't for the part where they leave their friend with the creepy dude.

also, kill bill. o-ren and beatrice own my heart.

i also really liked the female characters in dead like me, though i never warmed up to daisy.
m_pendulum 16th-May-2012 02:05 am (UTC)
OMG I LOVE DEATH PROOF!!

People keep saying they didn't talk like women, but that is so me and my girlfriends!
enid_keaner 16th-May-2012 02:08 am (UTC)
I am so confused about how women are supposed to talk? I didn't see anything strange about it in Death Proof.
manaconda 16th-May-2012 02:09 am (UTC)
whoever says that has never heard women talk then. not every group of woman talks like that, obviously, but uh, most of the ones i've interacted with have.
kukamine 16th-May-2012 02:15 am (UTC)
they didn't talk like women
wth is that supposed to mean?
Women and men talk in a very similar manner.

This reminds me of how I mentioned this film to a guy once and he said, "is that the movie where they talk about their periods?"

lololol I was so insulted. Especially because periods aren't mentioned a single. fucking. time.
landwarinasia 16th-May-2012 02:13 am (UTC)
YES! I love Death Proof to pieces except for that part where they leave their friend with the creeper. Like what the fuck? Who does that???
amkf 16th-May-2012 02:17 am (UTC)
I think I get more enjoyment from Death Proof than any other Tarantino movie, even if I acknowledge that others are "better."
getbacknow 16th-May-2012 06:04 pm (UTC)
quentin tarantino does such kickass (sometimes literally) female characters
madamluna 16th-May-2012 06:55 pm (UTC)
I agree with you 100%, that part of the film where they left her with him really bothered me. They never really resolve it either :/
hazel_belle 17th-May-2012 02:03 am (UTC)
GEORGE!!!! Dead Like Me was an awesome show, and shame on showtime for cancelling it and than fucking it up with that horrid movie
amber_protocol 17th-May-2012 08:50 am (UTC)
Dead Like Me. <3 I loved George, she was so prickly and it was awesome. And it had good female relationships as well, George/Dolores, Daisy/George, Joy/Reggie. I didn't realise it until a few years afterwards but it really was so great for women, it had the most important roles being mostly female (Rube was the only real major male character, Mason was an under-developed fuckup) and I really need to rewatch it soon.

About Daisy, I absolutely fucking despised her when she first showed up, but after we found out what her last thought was I completely understood her and started to really enjoy her character.
oatmealmonster 16th-May-2012 02:04 am (UTC)
is there any reason in particular that there is a decline? it seems like big females characters have been going down for years, but there is no explanation. it should be going up.
akaich0u 16th-May-2012 02:05 am (UTC)
Still haven't seen the Avengers and I really have no inclination to tbh. Guess I'm just that uncool.

In recent years the hbic in my icon has been my favorite book and movie female character. Historically, I also loved Scarlett O'Hara and the wild success of Gone with the Wind (book and movie).
wackypinkbunny 17th-May-2012 07:15 pm (UTC)
My friends and family rolled their eyes when I said that the reason I didn't want to see the Avengers was because there were too many dicks on the dance floor. lol.
bananasnrum 16th-May-2012 02:05 am (UTC)
Christopher Nolan has a movie coming out this year. Every woman in the film will likely die.
enid_keaner 16th-May-2012 02:07 am (UTC)
And they will mostly be really pointless or exist solely to change the life, in some small/large way, of the male protagonist.

I have issues with Nolan and his women.
bananasnrum 16th-May-2012 02:08 am (UTC)
They're not his women. They're his inevitable offerings for the after life.
landwarinasia 16th-May-2012 02:14 am (UTC)
Yep. His fridge is full up to the brim.
oatmealmonster 16th-May-2012 02:09 am (UTC)
at least the new batman film will have two women (anne and marion). i wonder if both will die?

lol
r_a_black 16th-May-2012 04:11 am (UTC)
There are times I feel a little conflicted with the female roles he has in his films. Like Inception, I kind of love the tragedy of their love story, and I love that he has a hard time letting her go in his dreams. Entirely on its own, I love it.

But then Nolan's dumb ass keeps killing off the women in his other films. If he does this in the TDKR I will be pissed and I will be loud about it.
