She burst onto the scene with her portrayal of traumatised hacker Lisbeth Salander in The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo.
But actress Noomi Rapace, who is starring in Ridley Scott’s new sci-fi blockbuster Prometheus, has revealed that playing the character almost sent her mad.
She said: “I gave Lisbeth my life for one-and-a-half years, and it messed me up. I was glad to let her go. I felt, ‘Just leave me now, I need to come back to life.’
“I was probably a pain in the arse to be with at that time. I don’t like to pretend, I don’t like to fake ... I slowly melt together with my characters.”
She told Dazed & Confused magazine: “It’s a decision to commit myself 100 per cent. See how far out it is possible to go without losing myself — because then you’ve lost the game.
"Then it becomes madness, you step over the edge and you can’t work.”
Rapace is joined in Scott’s epic prequel to the Alien series by Idris Elba, Guy Pearce, Charlize Theron and Michael Fassbender.
The full interview is in June’s Dazed & Confused, out on Thursday.

It's great to finally see her getting some publicity. It's been all Theron/Fassbender so far and Fox should be pushing her more.
As for Rapace, she is so good. I really hope this opens her up and she gets more cred. She's so good! And really pretty in very weird way.
