They're alive-- the children that he killed were the orphans that Bran had sent to help the shepard with his flock. Theon is trying really hard not to look like a flop and his sister is coming to Winterfell soon. If she found out he lost the Stark boys he would look like an idiot (he is an idiot and Asha/Yara already thinks that, but whatever).
