Joss Whedon explains why he had to do unspeakable things to one character in The Avengers

Now that most of the planet has seen The Avengers, we're going to freely talk about one of the more tragic aspects of Joss Whedon's movie. So if you wish to remain spoiler free stop reading here!
Spoilers ahead...
We've already analyzed why Whedon always kills the characters we love most — but now we want specifics. What made him want to kill Agent Coulson off? And wasn't he worried that killing off this beloved agent, the "character-killer" stigma would stick to him worse than ever?
At the junket for The Avengers we asked Whedon, and he responded that is just simply had to be done... and totally wasn't his idea.
Are you worried about perpetuating the "Joss Whedon kills your favorite character" stigma, with what you did to Agent Coulson in The Avengers?
Joss Whedon: In our first meeting Kevin Feige said, this is what we're gonna do and I said, "Oh but you have to go out there and tell everybody that it was your idea because this is going to get me so much shit. Because they are all going to be like, "Oh he did it again!" It was stipulated from the beginning, and I completely agree that it was the right thing to do, and so did Clark. Who said in the early days, when I was busy apologizing for it, "In a movie like this, with what's going on if there isn't some toll, it's just irresponsible story telling."
Full disclosure: Disney paid for io9's travel and expenses at this press junket.

Apparently the last ep for the season is on 17 June. Sunday nights are just the actual best; I have way too much to watch & I love it. And yeah, I mean, the fandom seems small & just pretty much entirely obsessed with Cesare/Lucrezia. Which I do get, believe me, but it just seems a bit obvious. The alpha ship of a given show is rarely my OTP. I like C/M and Lucrezia/Giulia. :D So, you know, we gotta do it ourselves.
Micholetto's loyalty just astounds me sometimes tbh. He would literally give his life and/or body parts for Cesare and, something other than friendship or not, it just warms up my heart so much.
I made the HUGE mistake of reading the Wikipedia pages of the actual people who were involved in the entire thing and I was so disappointed that Micholetto dies. But hopefully they will keep him around because Cesare really does need him (I know he's competent, but he would be SO useless without him lol) and they are my OTP and I know for a fact that I will stop watching the show when they kill him. Hell, 65% of why I watch IS Micholetto and his bromance with Cesare. So I keep expecting them to kill him (and there will be tears when they do) but I hope he survives this season and at least a couple more. Or just doesn't die which would be perfect, really.
Sunday is BANANAS. I am in Serbia so when I go to thepiratebay on Monday morning, the sheer amount of things I need to download and watch is insane tbh.
I do think Cesare/Lucrezia is sweet, but I don't see it working out in the long run tbh. But omg, Lucrezia/Giulia? Dude, you are my shipping SOUL MATE.
But C/M for number one, always and forever <3
I am rewatching the episode now and my god, it's even better than it was the first time. Not even to mention Cesare getting along with Micholetto's mom and Micholetto fucking a Cesare lookalike while Cesare fucks a redhead, but the episode is just heartbreaking for my bb :( And I laughed so hard with the whole C/K and M/A sex scenes being intertwined thing and Cesare using A KNIFE to flirt omg. I ship C/M so much that it's sickening lol
But the line where Cesare says he can't imagine Micholetto being born or dying made me nervous because omg I don't want forshadowing and my bb better not die in this season :(
And I know Micholetto topped in this episode but there is not a doubt in my mind that he would bottom for Cesare in a heartbeat.
Nooooo, not THIS season!! D: Way too soon! I have to wonder if Cesare isn't going to ask him to...well, I think he may play a very important part, perhaps. I mean, they didn't just introduce that character to skulk around gingerishly and awesomely kill people. I assume he's going to factor majorly into the family arc. So...we'll see. And DUDE, yes, I can see that. If he was willing to give up an EYE, I think he'd do just about anything he asked. Oh, that is so dark & twisty and I LOVE IT.
...I like messed-up ships; whatevahIdowhatIwant. >_________>
Cesare having fun with the mother SLAYED me lol. You could tell that he was also a bit stunned that she seemed normal and nice and how amused he was that Michelotto was obviously still her baby.
But lol omg the graveyard. I mean, I am 95% positive that his dad was a raging homophobe who beat him and that's why Michelotto killed him and gets off on having gay sex there, but IA, be so kind as to avoid cemeteries once you finally see common sense, Cesare and Michelotto...
I am really wondering if they will have Cesare find out, or just be like 'well, this happened, let's never speak of it again'. I'm sure that Cesare would find some appropriately metaphorically-laced way to discuss the whole thing. But yes, REDHEAD and CESARE LOOKALIKE! Either I'm looking too deeply into it (perfectly possible lol) or they are just beating us over the head with it.
I am a pessimist by nature lol, which is why I am very concerned about him dying now :( I think what you say might be true, and he is SUCH a valuable character to have around, but Cesare saying that and Michelotto telling him that he will always be safe whenever he is near (seriously, MY HEART), just makes me think sad, sad thoughts :( or maybe it's an influence from Mad Men and its many very unsubtle death references that make me look too deeply into things lol.
Dark and twisty messed up ships > normal ships (minus McSteamy/Avery because that ship just sails itself, really).
I also enjoyed his completely deadpan reaction to hearing that he'd killed his father. It was both endearing that he didn't judge and kind of hilarious that he was like "oh, nbd." And you are probably right about his dad and that is just angstactular and therefore I love it. And I'd think there's an added religious twist there--how does Michelotto feel about the church? He's devoted to Cesare, but he ain't exactly an upstanding cardinal all the time...very complex indeed.
Michelotto telling him that he will always be safe whenever he is near (seriously, MY HEART)
eeeeeeeee I loved that line. ♥ But, I mean, really, they're totally not staying strictly true to historical canon; it seems that characters without real-life equivalents (Ursula, Paolo) can go at any time because they're just made up for the show, but I'd like to think they'll keep the historically-relevant characters around for a while at least. But just the fact that I ship them probably means they're doomed for sorrow, since I apparently cannot like ANY non-tragic ships...BUT NOT SOON. You know how they drag these things out. This ain't Downton Abbey; this season's only been, what, a few months? Less than a year? I have faith, kinda!
OH MAN, Mark/Jackson. :D So wonderful. But I haven't seen that ep either [Thursday are crazazy for me, TV-wise] so I won't ask. ;)
Lol let's face it, EVERYONE's attitude about the church, Pope included, in The Borgias seems to be 'great way to get money, power, good food and sex, what is this god you speak of?' But that reminds me of one of my favorite C/M moments back in season 1 when Michelotto failed in killing someone (Delarovare, I think, or however you spell it) and he keeps forgetting to say 'your eminence' and Cesare gets pissy and all 'omg didn't you notice I am wearing different clothes, how rood!'. And Cesare really is such a cocktease lol, with his sticking of the thumb in the watermelon and then sucking it into his mouth. But I did start wondering why Michelotto was so quick in trusting Cesare so much. Was it self-preservation, or the fact that he looked like his boyfriend, or the fact that he was hot, or, my personal headcanon - because he realized right away that they are soulmates. Either way, I just love them and their twisted, co-dependent, erotically charged relationship so much.
But lol, you are so right about Downton Abbey. I love that it's been two seasons and almost ten years and not one single person looks any different. It's been a while since I read any of their Wiki pages, but I think Michelotto died a year after Cesare? I'm pretty sure Lucrezia outlived all of them. But I hope that means he will live to see the end of the show. Pleeeeease, showrunners.
And I can't believe you ship Mark/Avery as well lmao. Love it! They are seriously my OTP, and they really need to ditch Lexie, both of them, and confess their feelings to one another.
