The Voice of Misogyny
After Tony performed "99 Problems" on last night's episode, the judges were asked for their responses. Christina, who has in the past criticized Tony for being one-dimensional (and also knows him personally, as they were on The Mickey Mouse Club together), told him he had a great voice and then added, "Your beautiful wife and your daughter, and family are here tonight, and I just thought, you know, the lyrical connotation was a little derogatory towards women...but all in all it was good fun."
Let's pause here: Note how restrained that statement is. The song relies heavily on misogynist language, but Christina didn't even spend her entire critique talking about that—she complimented Tony on the performance and gave a barely passing mention of the fact that the lyrics are problematic, yet it still earned her the misogynist wrath of Tony's coach, Adam.

A really interesting read. And an awesome explanation as to why people are upset with Adam Levine and Tona, and why the reaction to what Christina said is problematic.

also, we know that christina likes 99 problems so i wonder if she really was just wanting to continue the tony beef. would she have said the same to another contestant? i've missed a lot of the voice posts so idk if that's been discussed.
Anyway, I'm mostly offended by the fact that Levine/Lucca pretended as if that performance choice was not directed at Christina, when it CLEARLY was. And fuck that "it's a metaphor" nonsense. The intent was obvious.
I'm fine with the judge banter/hate, but don't disrespect me as a viewer. Let's call a spade a spade. (I disrespect myself enough for watching this bullshit, thanks) Don't insult MY intelligence.
Do I really care that Tony Lucca basically called Christina a bitch? Nope. Do I really care that Christina called him out on it? Yep. In fact, I'm impressed.
That said, I get what you're saying -- Jay-Z claims it's a metaphor and some white boy on The Voice claiming it to be a metaphor, as if he wrote the song, isn't cool...I agree with you there.
The fact that it was directed at Christina is my issue, and the fact that they denied it pisses me off even more. If one is gonna be rude or cause drama, even if for the LOLs, at least own it.
In other words: I agree. :)
damn, i'm with you. all these people replying thinking it was older lmao. i'm forever stuck thinking 99/00 is only a few years ago.
It was so obviously pre-meditated on Adam & Tony's part - the whole "Team Xtina" shirt reveal right after she calls them out. Ugh. I just feel bad for her that all this came from that single "one dimensional" critique.
I have this fantasy of sorts where Tony was literally the only person who liked Adam and vice versa lol

Those comments are making this article even more relevant lol
am i wrong?
(not to say that those usages aren't problematic on their own, obviously.)
ALSO i don't even watch the show so i am not going to wade into how the song operates contextually -- i concede to my feminist buds fully there.

Or maybe its just about having an incredible amount of swagger. #speakingoutofmyass
I mean you can argue he tried making it his own but he could have done that with ANY other song, that this song had that underlining message (so convenient) and they took advantage of it is what bothered me.
A+ to this article.
Oh, and people mentioning Christina originally liking the song obviously didn't pay attention to how she addressed the issue. She mentioned it being derogatory after mentioning his children and family being in the audience. She also mentioned it, because it was clearly directed at her.
i fucking POPPED OFF.
So, pretty reasonable, but the response is batshit hysterics, people shrieking that she is a cunt, bitch, ugly whore, that she needs to die, etc. It just feels like the reaction is 100X more over the top, cruel, and meaner than anything Christina has said on the show even when she is being openly and constantly disrespected by Adam and Tony the entire time.
So...I guess I just don't get it. We don't like Christina so she deserves to be torn to pieces and death wished on her for a benign comment?
I just can't agree with that. Everyone knows Christina has not been above the petty baiting and sniping that's gone on here (see: the "Britney cover band" dig a million years after the fact), but her actions are more understandable, and the false equivalency that's been deemed from certain people is grating and inaccurate. Look, if you go back to the beginning, this all started because Christina said she finds Tony one-dimensional. That's a fair criticism and it wasn't personal. Would it have been hard feedback to take with dignity, sure. But the way Tony and Adam have responded to it has irked me from day one. I don't know if they were insecure or doubtful of Tony's own abilities and talent to prove her wrong, but instead they felt the need to hit back with the Britney cover, then a pointed "How Do You Like Me Now" cover, and then it culminated to this "99 Problems" cover. Christina contributed to it reaching that boiling point but Adam/Tony retaliated with unequal force in such a gross and tacky way.
tl;dr Christina took potshots at Tony's image and celebrity connections, Adam and Tony reappropriated a rap song about racial issues to drag Christina in a misogynistic manner. They're not the same and there's no reason it should have reached that point. Don't let anyone tell you differently.
(Sorry this is so long but I've kept my mouth shut until now, but some of these comments are just drenched in ignorance and bigotry.)

"Harder to Breathe" was when I first started becoming suspicious of his asshole tendencies.
I realized that a few years ago and I kind of have never felt the same about him since.
he's such a piece of shit.

i cant facepalm enough.
This is reminding me of the Patton Oswalt/Roseanne twitter war where he retweeted some asshole who said that Lindsay Lohan did more to degrade women by flashing her kitten than Louis C.K. did by calling Palin a cunt.
