'Dark Shadows' Is Another Lazy, Incoherent Disappointment From Tim Burton

“Dark Shadows” is not the worst movie that Tim Burton has ever made, but that’s only because there’s nothing worse than “Alice in Wonderland.”
A desperate jumble of ideas in search of deeper substance, much less focus, Burton’s latest collaboration with actor Johnny Depp is the latest, and perhaps greatest, proof that yet exists for a director, Burton’s a hell of a production designer. Given the film’s incredible lack of cohesion – or follow-through – the film feels like the resigned end result of a studio’s best efforts to whittle an unwieldly mess into something manageable, but far too many of its shortcomings remain exposed for it to play as anything other than a showcase for the star and filmmaker’s laziness, hubris, or both.

Ouch. I hope Frankweenie turns out to be better than this.

Yes! This is by far my favorite version of the Alice story/world. I'd love to see a film adaptation someday.
tsuki_yagami Re: Burton could never9th-May-2012 01:00 am (UTC)
McGee's Alice is awesome,I still hope one day someone will make a movie out of this.

YES!

I'm playing through the first game right now and I'm about to start the second. I love it.
batsublue Re: Burton could never12th-May-2012 08:52 am (UTC)
I seriously need to start playing this game again. I think I only got as far as Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dum when I last played it.

tim burton, johnny depp, and helena bonham carter need to fucking break up professionally already. it's killing all of their talent/careers
enid_keaner 9th-May-2012 12:52 am (UTC)
GURL YES

It saddens me that people forget how great of an actress HBC really is.
masterofmystery 9th-May-2012 12:55 am (UTC)
even her small-ass role in the king's speech was a breath of fresh air. she's such a fucking versatile actor that it pains me she keeps doing the same thing with tim, and to some extent, even bellatrix lestrange (though that was a series, so she couldn't help that)
sugarbobbin 9th-May-2012 12:45 am (UTC)
I thought this movie was going to be going back to the glory that was Sleepy Hollow. Tim, why must you take everything I love and ruin it?

Probably going to watch the 1990 version on hulu again.
angel_dust_fury 9th-May-2012 12:46 am (UTC)
this kind of crap is just sort of unredeemable

Wow.

omg I loled so hard at Michael Keaton.
zxora 9th-May-2012 05:14 am (UTC)
This is wonderful. And, of course, it would be comedy created by the British. Geniuses, those people.
adorealire 9th-May-2012 12:48 am (UTC)
This will probably be one of those movies that get bad reviews when it comes out, but becomes a cult hit in the future.
redhobbit 9th-May-2012 12:50 am (UTC)
I'm still seeing it, because I like Dark Shadows and Johnny Depp.
heart_iswild 9th-May-2012 12:50 am (UTC)
that was pretty scathing

i get the annoyance tho, as a huge fan of burton and a big fan of depp. it's so frustrating to see two amazing talents turn into empty cash cows
arista_artisan 9th-May-2012 12:50 am (UTC)
No to Depp playing a variant of the same character and Burton making the same movie for the nth time. I'm just here to ensure a Voice discussion post will be up in a timely fashion.
enid_keaner 9th-May-2012 12:51 am (UTC)
The only nice thing I have to say about Alice in Wonderland is that Mia was pretty and I wanted all of her costumes. I would wear the shit out of her suit of armor.
heart_iswild 9th-May-2012 01:00 am (UTC)
i was obsessed with her coloring. dark eyes with that pale skin and fair hair...v striking
chantonii 9th-May-2012 02:00 am (UTC)
Yep.
purepulp 9th-May-2012 05:53 am (UTC)
She was lovely. Her acting wasn't very good though :/
dirrtypony 9th-May-2012 12:51 am (UTC)
idk i want to see this.
fairhepburn 9th-May-2012 12:52 am (UTC)
I wanna judge it by myself ...
I'm really excited about this movie
viakyusu 9th-May-2012 12:52 am (UTC)
Man, I hope this is wrong and it's atleast decent. I'm seeing it with my friend b/c she's a horrible person who doesn't want to see Avengers. WTF is wrong with her! (tried to use her as a excuse to see it a second time lmao)
littleonelychee 9th-May-2012 03:02 am (UTC)
I won tickets to the premiere last night, it was good - nothing amazing or ground breaking but just enough to make it a decent movie imo
run_atreyu 9th-May-2012 12:53 am (UTC)
Tim Burton was a genius of the 80s/90s, and has been a hack ever since. He's got caught up in his own self-importance and ~artistic vision~ and the films are all shit. And Johnny Depp is no different. Mind you, unlike everyone here I don't think he's a particular talent as an actor, but he should do vastly more varied roles and films than these Burton pieces of junk. It's more sad that Helena Bonham-Carter has hitched her yoke to Tim, because she's excellent.
sandvich 9th-May-2012 12:53 am (UTC)
Tim Burton just frustrates me lately. He's not untalented. Neither are Johnny and Helena. It's just that they've all gotten really lazy and uncreative.
teddyism 9th-May-2012 01:17 am (UTC)
THIS. I'm wondering why, with so much talent between them and thinking of the good creative choices they've all made in the past, one of them hasn't woken the fuck up and realized what kind of product they're putting out nowadays.
enid_keaner 9th-May-2012 01:21 am (UTC)
They are way too comfortable with each other and too blind to the other's faults.
