PBS announced today that “Sherlock” has a welcome home in the 21st century — Sunday night’s premiere of MASTERPIECE MYSTERY!’s second season averaged 3.2 million viewers, not including those viewing through station replays, DVRs or online streaming. (Nielsen Fast National data, 2.1 household rating.) The premiere of the second season of the BAFTA Award-winning series more than doubled the average PBS primetime rating (based on metered market averages). New episodes of “Sherlock” debut each Sunday night on MASTERPIECE through May 20.

“Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman have taken Sherlock and Watson to a whole new level,” said MASTERPIECE executive producer Rebecca Eaton. “We’re thrilled that viewers have responded so enthusiastically to this groundbreaking series.”

“The updated ‘Sherlock’ is witty and engaging, breathing new life into the classic stories,” said PBS senior vice president & chief TV programming executive John F. Wilson. “It’s the perfect combination of IQ and GQ for the PBS audience.”

PBS stations have brought viewers across the nation together for events dedicated to the new season, partnering with organizations across their communities for activities and screenings. Online, fans were given the opportunity to watch a sneak preview of the opening minutes of Series 2 on Facebook, beginning two weeks before broadcast; on May 2, a live-streamed fan Q&A from New York with actor Benedict Cumberbatch, co-creator Steven Moffat and producer Sue Vertue was shared across the Internet.

In addition, on May 6, nearly 15,000 fans checked in on the GetGlue entertainment social network, creating a social media reach of more than seven million people and earning the #3 trending spot on the site. Among the thousands of Sherlock tweets during broadcast, nearly 5,000 contained the official #SherlockPBS hashtag, according to social media monitoring service Meltwater Buzz.

suddenlyflying 7th-May-2012 09:06 pm (UTC)
Yay! Excellent news! It's too bad about the cuts PBS made, but it's nice to know it's getting a good reception in the US.

ch33rylips 7th-May-2012 09:13 pm (UTC)
Cuts? eww no will watch online then.
flightbyzephyr 8th-May-2012 09:19 am (UTC)
The cuts are bearly noticable and excluding the one exchange (SPOILER MYCROFT: Don’t be alarmed. It’s to do with sex. SHERLOCK: Sex doesn’t alarm me. MYCROFT: How would you know?)you won't miss them. If you watch on PBS you will help with the ratings and the PBS might simitaiously air them at the same time as the UK gets them so no more waiting!

minalskare 7th-May-2012 09:17 pm (UTC)

sadisticsidhe 7th-May-2012 09:43 pm (UTC)
What cuts did they make?

(I haven't watched my DVRed Scandal in Belgravia yet.)
endingonfire 7th-May-2012 09:47 pm (UTC)
dem puppy dog eyes.
heytherrre 7th-May-2012 10:37 pm (UTC)
what have they cut?? is it just nudie scenes from belgravia, or are they cutting/have they cut from all the episodes? shame tbh :(
flightbyzephyr 8th-May-2012 09:17 am (UTC)
It is for time because of the masterpiece introductions and making sure the ad breaks are in the middle of sentences since the BBc doesn't have adverts. It is atually Hartwoods Film who do the cuts themseleves not PBS or the BBC for that matter.

i have to buy vol 2 asap.

startin my summer reading woot woot!
whosmurry 7th-May-2012 09:10 pm (UTC)
Not bad for PBS, especially since it was all sorts of unnecessarily cut up for PBS. Imagine if HBO had picked it up instead, though.
flightbyzephyr 8th-May-2012 09:27 am (UTC)
Does HBO air shows it doesn't make?

PBS were always gonna have first pick to air it in America since, like Downton, they pay for some of it.
whosmurry 8th-May-2012 11:38 am (UTC)
HBO was apparently in talks to air it in America, very early on, or so said Benedict Cumberbatch. He said they balked at the fact that it was only 3 episodes. HBO pretty regularly airs BBC produced films and shows, I do believe.
snapiphany 7th-May-2012 09:10 pm (UTC)
I chose to watch this, which I've seen before, over a new episode of Nurse Jackie. NO REGRETS.

But I was annoyed at them cutting shit out, though.
scarletfbl 7th-May-2012 09:10 pm (UTC)
Fuck, every time someone mentions Sherlock on ONTD, I end up watching both seasons again.

I DO NOT NEED THIS, RN.

PS, is anyone as obsessed with Martin Freeman's hair color as I am, rn? Random as fuck, I know...
deadtree 8th-May-2012 12:12 am (UTC)
After watching Hitchhiker's Guide, I find myself really bizarrely interested in his hair. Idgi.
scarletfbl 8th-May-2012 01:59 pm (UTC)
That's been on my to-watch list ever since I found out he was in it (even with Alan Rickman).
black_swan87 7th-May-2012 09:12 pm (UTC)
because of last night's post, I crackship Ben and Alek Wek just because it would piss of the Cumberbitches.
scarletfbl 7th-May-2012 09:16 pm (UTC)
Fuck, yeah. He can stir his milky wand in my hot cocoa any time he wants, too.
enid_keaner 7th-May-2012 09:44 pm (UTC)
LMAO
winegums 7th-May-2012 09:36 pm (UTC)
Your comment made me crackship him and Freema Agyeman tbh.

(I want a Who/Sherlock crossover, and Martha is fucking flawless. Come to think of it, I wouldn't mind an LOUK/Sherlock crossover too, and that is more plausible in this 'verse, Alesha Philips+Sherlock=WIN)
analytique 7th-May-2012 09:37 pm (UTC)
what happened in last night's post?
but yaaaas
